Hi Everyone, I’m Alex. I’m a narrative designer and producer. I’ve been an IC reader for a long time now; long before I was making games.

I’ve most recently done work on games for Alexa based on Jurassic World and Jack Ryan. I’ve also been adapting children’s books into branching narratives for voice platforms. I also do freelance game design work at whoever needs it done.

Hello! I’m Michael. I used to visit Insert Credit all the time because it was probably the only place on the internet where sometimes you’d see a news post that would namedrop Ranger-X for some reason. In fact now that I think about it I still have a jpg flyer for some GP32 game that looked very “inspired by” that I downloaded from IC back then. I think I was posting on the forum but it’s possible I just lurked. My posts may have been so embarrassing that I blocked them from memory.

Since then I have made some games, especially Tiny Barbarian DX.

Anyway @P_Hominid told me the forum was back so here I am!

P_Hominid your feelings with Radiant Silvergun are exactly why I’ve hardly played anything new and mainly speedrun the games that do that for me (NiGHTS, SkyGunner, Game Gear stuff) when I do have time to play.

James- Feel like we’ve got a lot in common. Most of my game time is split between halfheartedly trying to 1CC shmups while my brain is still fresh enough to forge those neural connections, and just scraping the barrel playing the same 10 games with stricter self-imposed rules. I’m ashamed. Like, am I just old? (No it’s the kids that are wrong)

I get over it by telling myself I’ve consumed all the media I needed to develop my own inspiration and it’s pointless to keep packing more data in until I act on that inspiration. I’ll catch up when I’m out of ideas. Gamedev monk mode

P_Hominid hard agree that the kids are wrong - you’re not old, you just already know where the good stuff is.
There’s certainly a lot of cool stuff coming out now, but there’s also a massive wealth of amazing things from back in the day that I’m not done enjoying (or even finding). I’m too busy trying to fumble through Japanese exclusives that I can’t read but desperately want to experience and weird stuff that I’ve heard of and want to see first hand (looking at you, Knights of the Crystallion) to make it around to most of the new stuff.

James- my reply to this subthread is - there’s plenty to learn from the past about game feel and inspiration and out-there ideas. But there’s loads to learn from games of today about how to smooth it all out, make it player friendly, and keep a purity of vision without sacrificing that other stuff. For my money you need the inspiration of the past tempered by the lessons of the lady 30 years. Not that I’m the best example of practicing what I preach!

Hello! I feel like an imposter because I read the entire thread and have to say… I don’t know anything about Insert Credit’s past haha. </3 I’m here because I follow Brandon on Twitter and thought it might be cool to use forums again. I guess I’m not alone in feeling that Twitter can be a bit much, and not just these days.

I’m the founder and director of an independent record label called Brave Wave. I’m technically part of the gaming industry, but I purposefully stay away from events and gatherings as I prefer to work alone with my artists. I like classic Mega Man (9 being my favorite), competitive Pokémon, Matsuno games, and Final Fantasy 8.

Older stuff is better at throwing shit at the wall and just brainstorming wonderful versions of what could be, without as many preconceptions as to what was tested and correct. Newer stuff has a better idea of why and how the pieces fit together and are used to effectively communicate ideas. A reason indie games can be so neat is, less fettered by scale and system, the impulse to tear up established rules and say, okay, but why and what if, all in mind of more developed communication theories. So you can get a lot of weirdo stuff like in the old days, that tries to direct the weirdness into raising active questions and fulfilling more of that latent potential.

𝔞𝔷𝔲𝔯𝔢𝔩𝔬𝔯𝔢 𝔤𝔴𝔢𝔫𝔡𝔬𝔩𝔶𝔫 𝔨𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔦𝔤𝔞𝔫 insert credit tends to be about poking around the less-explored avenues and theatrically stroking one’s chin. Ah, one muses, what sort of ideas are coming through this mess, and how do they affect me and why?

Brandon was especially good at turning up strange things for discussion that no one else was really looking at. Tim would write autonarrative novellas inspired by the ideas and feelings he picked up from the games he was engaging with. I put my autistic mind toward a lit crit breakdown of theme and message and method.

At the time this was all a bit odd, and attracted cool weird people and caused some other people to be deeply annoyed. (One loses track of how many times one writes the “worst game review ever.”) I think distance has validated much of our approach, if not always the substance of what we churned out. I have gotten to looking back on old articles and thinking, this could have been written differently but it’s surprising how well the assertions hold up some two decades on.

hey everyone, I’m will. I’m a carpenter, which is maybe the opposite of a game developer? I’ve been hanging out at insert credit / select button for a long time now, but I never post much.

I don’t have time to properly play stuff anymore but I have some instagram accounts where I’m slowly investigating the aesthetics of a few different consoles via the medium of me taking photos of my computer screen. my favourite thing related to video games at this point in my life is looking at the photographed crt screenshots in old magazines, so I guess I like the idea of extracting something permanent from a video game. like little postcards from a different world.

I also like sega games and street fighter alpha 3 😃

devilsblush the idea of pulling postcards out of these games is a really cool one. A lot of my new game play lately has been things I’ve seen interesting screenshots of, so I definitely get the appeal (it just makes me really want to go vacation there too, I suppose).

devilsblush I appreciate when people choose one relatively niche thing about games and decide - this is my thing! I knew you were doing instagram stuff but didn’t realize you were scouring magazines to look at prior art (of photos of screens), so that’s neat. If you’ve found anyone that’s done it particularly well, or in manuals or anything, maybe make a thread about it! I guess a lot of folks used slides in magazines, after photos of screens went out of fashion, but I think they sometimes still did it??

I started out in the games industry as the person responsable for videogames for a local video rental chain, opened my own retail store, then wholesale before selling it all and instead start writing about games.

Since 2k11 I have been involved in organizing local videogame meetups and indiegame events as well as organizing talks and festivals.

Oh, I forgot. The omake, since I never figured out how to attach items until now. Iwadare Noriyuki-san signed my cover of “Amagami”. The other autograph is from Asakawa Yuu-san. Both of them were surprised that there is someone with a copy of the game outside of Japan, and Iwadare-san was surprised when I showed him “Kimikiss” also. (Iwadare-san was at Japan Expo America, and Asakawa-san was at Anime Overdose. I remember the latter event falling on a February, as I gave Asakawa-san a wine bottle for an early birthday gift seeing that her birthday’s on the following month.)
