I’ve just noticed that I’ve never introduced myself in this forum. I’ve browsed it a lot over the past year or so, but I tend to keep my thoughts to myself most of the time. I’m trying to be more socially active!

Anyways, my name is Pedro! My pronouns are he/him. I arrived here from the Goblin Bunker Discord Channel. I’m an old-school brazilian cinephile and a future computer science graduate (as a matter of fact, I presented my bachelor’s thesis today!)

For the last year, I’ve been going back to my childhood memories and playing loads of video games. I was mostly focused on watching movies, but I’ve quickly regained my love for Nintendo games and JRPGs all-around. I’m also finishing college and gaining a lot of free time, so I’m currently looking to fulfill a couple dreams. I’ve always loved east asian media for example, so, starting 2022, I’ll be studying Japanese to discover more of the culture without the language barrier. And who knows, maybe I’ll delve into Chinese and Korean.

rejj It’s basically a comparative study of movie recommendation system algorithms. I’m not the biggest fan of streaming services but, the topic was fairly interesting!

I’m not the best at making up app ideas either, so it was loads simpler.

pedrochambs that’s interesting - I worked with a company that was working on recommendations of back catalogs for quite a while… turned out companies did not care about or want to monetize that back catalog at all. would’ve been pretty cool for this thing!

exodus On the topic of companies making bad choices on recommenders, I had to study the case surrounding Netflix’s system:

A few years ago, they built a whole competition on the idea that machine learning experts could try building out an algorithm better than the one they used at the time… for a million dollars!

It turns out the team who won wanted to release the algorithm publicly, and Netflix was very much against that. They ended up just giving out a million bucks to the team and shutting down the competition as a whole. Although, yeah, there were other technical, quite tedious-to-explain reasons for not going through with the algorithm at the time.

pedrochambs yeahhhh that sounds right to me!! we wound up shifting it to work with video games (which is why I was brought in) and it went okay actually, Humble wound up adopting it - but we couldn’t scale beyond that because most stores just didn’t care about improving their recommendations.

@pedrochambs @exodus I have a little bit of experience of this too, albeit with music. Despite music being an industry that actually does do quite a good job of monetising and promoting its back catalogue, the wall we hit was that existing recommendation systems were ‘just ok’ by design, as making them too good would take precious consuming hours away from paid-for and promoted content.

Everyone thinks they want an algorithm, but then they want to mess with it themselves until it exactly matches the CEO’s boomer tastes and allows for payola.

I saw some talk of algorithms and the cd swap trick. I wanted to let you know that I learned this CD Swap trick and played a burned copy of Symphony of the Night by keeping the disk spinning with a small rubber pig shoved in the back.

hello. this is me introducing myself. i made an account a year ago and then finally followed through on coming back to a forum for the first time in over a decade.

i am melgna and i have been on the internet since 1999. i have a wide variety of interests but 90% of them involve video games somehow. i am also a recovering addict (booze, mostly) and generally filled to the brim with dark humor.

if anyone can recommend more games to me like Eastshade and Vall-Hall-A and/or something in between, i would be forever grateful.

How about 2064: Read Only Memories? It’s closer to the Vall-Hall-A end of the spectrum, but it’s an experience I loved, and am always glad to be able to recommend it to folks who might like it.

Hello i’m pico. I came across a tweet about this forum having a Christmas/December-themed video games list and I like that sort of thing, so I had to sign up!

I’ve seen a lot of different online communities since the 32-bit era, and kind of stopped participating in them around a decade ago when I grew tired of AAA style of games and marketing. Now, I mostly lurk on twitter to find out about new, creative indies or what a long-time favorite Japanese dev is up to(who also tend to be independent now). I enjoy finding gems to play on every platform, including VR and Apple Arcade.

Worked a few years in game QA before bailing out for another quality-related role in a different industry. Worked on some really cool stuff, but the pay, hours, work culture and benefits(or lack of) wasn’t a good fit for me. I’m currently learning about animation and would like to find some kind of a professional role related to it. Working full time while going to school part time is kind of a slog and not sure it’s effective yet in terms of actually leaning enough to put together a portfolio. Either way, I’m glad I still enjoy video games after all these years and getting a small inside peek at the creation of them. At this rate, they’ll always be a hobby of mine.
