A thread in which to introduce oneself

Older stuff is better at throwing shit at the wall and just brainstorming wonderful versions of what could be, without as many preconceptions as to what was tested and correct. Newer stuff has a better idea of why and how the pieces fit together and are used to effectively communicate ideas. A reason indie games can be so neat is, less fettered by scale and system, the impulse to tear up established rules and say, okay, but why and what if, all in mind of more developed communication theories. So you can get a lot of weirdo stuff like in the old days, that tries to direct the weirdness into raising active questions and fulfilling more of that latent potential.

𝔞𝔷𝔲𝔯𝔢𝔩𝔬𝔯𝔢 𝔤𝔴𝔢𝔫𝔡𝔬𝔩𝔶𝔫 𝔨𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔦𝔤𝔞𝔫 insert credit tends to be about poking around the less-explored avenues and theatrically stroking one’s chin. Ah, one muses, what sort of ideas are coming through this mess, and how do they affect me and why?

Brandon was especially good at turning up strange things for discussion that no one else was really looking at. Tim would write autonarrative novellas inspired by the ideas and feelings he picked up from the games he was engaging with. I put my autistic mind toward a lit crit breakdown of theme and message and method.

At the time this was all a bit odd, and attracted cool weird people and caused some other people to be deeply annoyed. (One loses track of how many times one writes the “worst game review ever.”) I think distance has validated much of our approach, if not always the substance of what we churned out. I have gotten to looking back on old articles and thinking, this could have been written differently but it’s surprising how well the assertions hold up some two decades on.

hey everyone, I’m will. I’m a carpenter, which is maybe the opposite of a game developer? I’ve been hanging out at insert credit / select button for a long time now, but I never post much.

I don’t have time to properly play stuff anymore but I have some instagram accounts where I’m slowly investigating the aesthetics of a few different consoles via the medium of me taking photos of my computer screen. my favourite thing related to video games at this point in my life is looking at the photographed crt screenshots in old magazines, so I guess I like the idea of extracting something permanent from a video game. like little postcards from a different world.

I also like sega games and street fighter alpha 3 😃

devilsblush the idea of pulling postcards out of these games is a really cool one. A lot of my new game play lately has been things I’ve seen interesting screenshots of, so I definitely get the appeal (it just makes me really want to go vacation there too, I suppose).

devilsblush I appreciate when people choose one relatively niche thing about games and decide - this is my thing! I knew you were doing instagram stuff but didn’t realize you were scouring magazines to look at prior art (of photos of screens), so that’s neat. If you’ve found anyone that’s done it particularly well, or in manuals or anything, maybe make a thread about it! I guess a lot of folks used slides in magazines, after photos of screens went out of fashion, but I think they sometimes still did it??

I started out in the games industry as the person responsable for videogames for a local video rental chain, opened my own retail store, then wholesale before selling it all and instead start writing about games.

Since 2k11 I have been involved in organizing local videogame meetups and indiegame events as well as organizing talks and festivals.

Oh, I forgot. The omake, since I never figured out how to attach items until now. Iwadare Noriyuki-san signed my cover of “Amagami”. The other autograph is from Asakawa Yuu-san. Both of them were surprised that there is someone with a copy of the game outside of Japan, and Iwadare-san was surprised when I showed him “Kimikiss” also. (Iwadare-san was at Japan Expo America, and Asakawa-san was at Anime Overdose. I remember the latter event falling on a February, as I gave Asakawa-san a wine bottle for an early birthday gift seeing that her birthday’s on the following month.)

I posted a little tiny bit on the original IC forums under a different name, and a bit more on SB and the Necrosoft forums.
I like travel and photography. Outside of North America, I’ve been to China, Japan, Vietnam, and Russia, I hope to travel some more when a vaccine exists and the crisis is over.
I play games sometimes, mostly older ones.

posted on the OG IC forums a bit and was part of the IC revival like 10 years ago or so.
used to be an editor. now i’m a game designer, though i might end up going harder into producer work, which is kind of like being an editor.
i play fighting games basically all the time.

IC taught me to cultivate my own taste, trust in it, and find people who also had intensely cultivated tastes of their own. it has been a powerful lesson and i hope to see it continue here!

Yo. I’m sklathill aka Vince and I used to write stuff on the old IC… and then I slowly realized there are some people better than me at that, so I mostly just kept stuff running behind the scenes. Nowadays I write music and make sound for video games and continue harboring strong emotions for those games 15-25 years ago that need just a bit more exposure. I got kinda lucky in being involved with the development of a fighting game, and I wouldn’t mind scratching that [developing games that really connect with the stuff that REALLY inspired you and extend further] itch. Maybe next game!

Howdy. I’m hyperjushin (sometimes stylized as hypr.jshn). You can call me hyper, or jushin or Jabri, which is my actual name.

I primarily make video essays on youtube about gaming and pop culture. I’m also an amatuer music producer. Most of my work is on soundcloud, but I’ve got some stuff on bandcamp too. I also post irreverent nonsense on twitter.

I’ve seen some people mention there being an old insertcredit. I’d never heard of it before coming here, but I’ve followed @exodus on twitter for a while now. Partially for gaming content, but mostly because he’s based in my hometown of Oakland. I used to have fun posting on the gameFAQs forums in my middle and early high school years, and miss being a part of a community like that, so I’m glad to have found this place.

Outside of obviously loving games, I’m also into anime, professional wrestling, online roleplaying and have fantasies about making my own choose-your-own adventures game ala choice of games.
