shaggylobo basically just horrible political work environment and expectations of responding to 100+ emails per day. i was definitely on my way out due to multiple (verbal) altercations with managers, so when we were having a second child and and staring down 4000+/month in daycare costs it was an easy decision to quit and be the stay at home parent

antillese this kind of post makes me happy!! I wanted this to be a place where people felt comfortable hanging out and trying things and I’m glad it can be that for some folks.

I do regret to inform you that insert credit started in 2001 though :o

exodus Ugh. I am glad I mistook that date because I absolutely have memories of IC in college and it was well-established in my brain when I was showing all my friends Project FF Dog on stops at houses on a road trip after I graduated.

Look, forgive me the date? Insert Credit has been in my life for literally half of it!

Insert Credit is a good thing and a good place, and we owe to Brandon a lot for bringing it back. This is something I have said many times already, but I’ll keep repeating it.

I’m currently sitting at my message number 1218, so a bit too late for me to do the same thing, but maybe I save it for my 2000th!

Hi, everyone! I am Kelzor. I’ve collaborated in a couple of videogames, written for some game media in Spain and taught narrative design classes. I also have a small video essay youtube channel that I started during the pandemic. I have been following the podcast for some time but I had not dare to participate in the forum because it was intimidating, specially because of the language barrier. shaggylobo yes it’s a horrible industry. like you i was looking to do something “creative,” in my case after a string of low-pay menial writing jobs. you can make more money in advertising than in other fields that accept liberal arts degrees, but even more than those other fields i think ad agencies have a sickness of the soul…i have many anecdotes such as one where my boss told me (unprompted) that she would gladly “work for a cigarette company…i don’t care, i’ll shill for anyone”

it’s all good! i never expected anything other than a paycheck from this gig, and i’ve had the luck to work with generally nice - or ate least, less shameless - people. said sickness of the soul is still there though, it’s institutional. i guess that’s what bothers me.

also some people are rat bastards.

@shaggylobo @Gaagaagiins I was working at a digital agency in the late 2000’s when Mad Men was just starting, and the cretins at that place used to think of that show as an instruction manual.

It was a nice place to spend about five or so years of my career getting to do a wide range of Stuff because it was all contract/project work for Clients - every month or so you’d finish the Thing you were working on and the next job came through.

Not healthy in the long term, however.

It sounded like an interesting industry to me in college, so I took the intro class and then was like ’ahhh it’s lying and manipulating people’ so I did not take any more of those classes. Funnily enough I work closely with our marketing team now but it’s at a non-profit so not quite the same!

there was this small and kinda bad agency I worked with where I got to write a script for a union campaign rightfully exposing our right wing governor for sabotaging a state-run company to turn public opinion against it, thus facilitating privatization. that felt good to write.

mostly it’s shit like potato chips ads for me, though. i want to get into doing some hobbyist game design once i have the free time so i can work on something i’m excited about. maybe that’s why i’m attracted to this place.

hey there! I’m TarJack (he/him).

I’ve been listening to Insert Credit for nearly a year, and found it through the same means many have: Kotaku to Action Button to insert credit. I’m extremely passionate about video games as a medium, and love tuning in every week to hear everyone’s takes on gaming. The show got me through the Mondays at my old miserable job, and now help me celebrate Mondays going to my new, non-miserable job!

I hope to start doing something creative in this medium, although I hold myself back and end up cancelling things I work on halfway through them and struggle to complete them for some reason. Everyone’s encouragement last week to “Just do something” really felt like a push to me personally to.. do something. I’m still not sure what yet, but it also pushed me to finally join here! I’ve not ever used a forum like this before, but I’m excited to see what it’s like. I hear everyone here is real chill, can’t wait to join that chill-ness.

TarJack welcome! good news re: the non-miserable job, glad your mind can be freed to focus on some other non-miserable things

we have a semi-regular (very open-ended) art jam, which might be a fun way to channel some of those creative juices–here’s our last one, I’m sure another will be coming around soon :)
