I feel so seen! This is my favourite piece of video game music, period. Didn’t realize it was a fan favourite as well!

lmfao nine goddamn hours climbing Kagutsuchi Tower and I got Nocturne’s worst ending. I was sure I would get the Aradia/“Freedom” ending but instead I got “Neutral” and everyone just telling me I suck. I guess I made one or two wrong dialogue choices like 20 hours back??? WTF.

2501 yeah, I’ve always found it odd that it isn’t, especially since it plays exactly like a Megaten main series game, but several years back someone pointed out that it’s just because it doesn’t take place in Tokyo.

It’s another series favourite of mine! I still have the 3DS version in my ‘to play’ queue.

Karasu Yeah, “it doesn’t take place in Tokyo” was the devs’ official explanation for why it wasn’t just called IV despite for all intents and purposes being the fourth mainline game. It sure feels more like a “real” SMT (and shares more creative talent with previous entries) than Apocalypse, imo…

Holy cow SMT V is way more expensive on the Japan eshop than it is on the Canada eshop!

9,878 yen vs $79.99+tax (8,208 yen).

Guess I’ll be playing the English version, then. I hope the internet isn’t lying to me about the option for Japanese voices…!

I also hope this is just a case of Atlus gouging nerds for all they’re worth, and gatekeeping language options accordingly, and that there won’t be significant content differences. Not that I play these games for their stories anyway lol.

If it works the same way as the European version, Japanese voices are available as a free additional download on the game’s eShop page.

This weekend is my last chance to finish Daigyakuten Saiban 2 so I’ll stay strong and wait until Monday or Tuesday to start SMT5. I am writing this here as I don’t trust my resolve at all and I need some modicum of written accountability somewhere to weigh on my mind.

Damn, what a coincidence! Look at the game I was hoping to finish before starting SMTV:

I’m currently on the last case of DGS2, in the middle of what seems to be the actual climax, so I think I’ll be able to resist the temptation. As an attempt to provide some motivation, this last stretch of the game it’s been phenomenal and very well paced (as opposed to some of the weakest parts of both games) so yeah, it seems there is some pay-off if you play it to the end, so hang in there!

In the meantime, I’m downloading precisely that voice patch, which by the way is 3′6 gigabytes, a bit too much considering one of the main appeals of purchasing physical copies on Switch these days is leaving the internal memory for other stuff, but oh well, what can you do.

Hell yeah. I’m also appreciative that the Steelbook/Launch “special” edition wasn’t forced this time around. Nice to just have a standard case.

I took the day off work today for this but between it arriving super late in the mail and a five-hour medical appointment I didn’t start until after 7pm.

Perhaps foolishly I’ve opted to go for a Hard difficulty playthrough. So far after two and a half hours I’ve not found anything too arduous in terms of difficulty though I have had to make use of the healing fountains a few times for dead allies.

I’ve only just unlocked demon fusion but of the systems that have been introduced prior I’m very much enjoying their inclusion overall. Magatsuhi skills were something that I was a little sceptical about before but timing to use them optimally without the meter taking forever to charge makes it an engaging inclusion, I feel. Similarly Miracles are a good addition and, to an extent, replace some of the systems in older games. Essences too are great, and they really streamline skill acquisition for the MC as well as demons - something that was a bugbear of mine from Nocturne.

Also, it’s gorgeous. I absolutely love the art direction.

Liking the game so far. Not a fan of xenoblade style area design though, so far just a little tedious jumping around and collecting junk

yeso I totally get what you mean, but at the same time I’m appreciative of the fact the MC is no longer a blue pushpin (nice bait & switch at the beginning tho) and that we get to actively explore and inhabit all those environments that were more indirectly presented in earlier entries. Specially cool considering SMT has always had top of the game art direction.

I would also like to commend the game for its sound design. Everything sounds as alien and weird as it should, I love the tune that indicates the full moon in particular.

First half-hour impressions:

Once again I am assaulted by a Japanese game with English voice acting that does not let you turn off subtitles during cutscenes. Might switch to Japanese just for that!
So sue me; I like motion blur in games.
Kinda respect what I assume is intended to be the fake-out high school opening, although - and maybe this isn’t a fair comparison - Nocturne got me more invested in Isamu, Chiaki and Yuko during its pre-apocalypse prologue than this got me to care about whoever these faux-Persona teens are supposed to be.
Have seen at least two different professional critic reviews at this point blasting the game for not being Persona. Maybe it’d be better not to encourage those people going in with the wrong expectations…?
This localization shows definite signs of a rush job. Just in the opening stretch there’s at least one grammatical error that made it all the way to voice recording (“If I didn’t save you, you may be dead”) and a voice actor pronouncing the archaic verb “secreted” (hid away) like the more common, completely different verb “secreted” (as in producing a liquid). I remember back when Persona 5 came out there were people complaining that the localization was unpolished; was this the kind of thing they meant?
