Great episode! Gene seems like a great podcast guest. Such an enthusiastic person.
His recommendation is, I think, a great one also. It’s actually something I’ve been thinking about a lot this week. If you live in Texas, you know the legislature has been up to some STUFF as they love to do once every other year. I don’t live in Texas as of the beginning of this year but still follow the news there and, IF you live in Texas and want to know what’s going on, I highly suggest subscribing to…
1) the Houston Chronicle as it’s a great big city newspaper that doesn’t get the clout of your coastal papers. Many are gone now but some of my favorite beat reporters were there in the past three years. Off the top of my head, Keri Blakinger was a great one, but she’s at the Marshall Project now.
2) The Texas Tribune, which is a non-profit news organization that also has incredibly great reporters. Chris Hooks is probably my go to, and he’s also a great Twitter follow, but there’s quite a few great ones.
Texas is a big place with so many things happening all the time and I’m very thankful I found great writers to help me understand what was going on so I didn’t get overwhelmed and just check out.
If anyone has media recommendations from the places they live/have lived, I would love to hear them. Local news is really important and good!
