I want to recommend Kwaidan Azuma Manor Story. It is a mix of Resident Evil but with melee weapons and point and click adventure games and looks like it belongs on a GDROM. I definitely love it but it is for a particular person. It is rough and clunky and has big difficulty spikes. It is made by one person so it has That Feel in good and bad ways. It definitely isn’t for everyone but if you like PS1 Japanese import curios, maybe give it a try.

I know of this game by the name Xexex, kind of a Konami take on R-Type…
Apparently it’s also called ORIUS…
And it’s $8 on switch, if anyone wants to try it, it’s a very awesome arcade game. It was released on Salamander Collection back in the day.

treefroggy I adore Xexex. Might be my favorite Konami shooter, certainly in the top 5. The ways it lets you use the r-type style thingamabob (the flint, I think they call it?) are all really neat. You can drop it in front of you as a shield, you can have it follow you around, you can use it as a charge shot, you can fling it across the screen, the game gets a lot of use out of just two buttons and everything feels intuitive. It has some of that early 90s Konami bs, but your ship has a lot more defensive options than say, the the Vic in Gradius 3, and recovery is much easier because even with no powerups the flint ain’t no joke.

I started playing Regency Solitaire last night as it’s discounted on the eshop, and I remembered the recent recommendation from @exodus in a recent episode. I think I’m genuinely addicted to this game. I beat 50% of the story in one sitting (which is a lot of solitaire) and am currently thinking about playing it and making progress when I’m away from home for the next few hours.

It’s certainly one of those games that is greater than the sum of its parts. Twee riches-to-rags-to-riches story? Solitaire puzzles? Very basic shop mechanic? Basic combo system? For some reason everything gels together in a way that’s deeply satisfying to enjoy in an evening, perhaps also because tonally it’s a huge shift from the games that I’d typically play.

Very recommended, and it’s like £7 on the eshop at the moment.

i found lumo while scraping the bottom of the budget barrel box basement, searching the nintendo eshop sorted by ascending price. i’ve played it for only fifteen minutes, so take it with a grain of salt, but it’s charmingly straight ahead, and for an isometric platformer it’s pleasantly ergonomic. it’s currently on sale for a dollar or two.

I nabbed a game on the Christmas sale that I have heard zero people ever mention and have been having a wonderful time with.

Tangle Tower is a great little detective game with all the interrogating kooky suspects and silly point and click item descriptions one could hope for. Throw in a handful of Professor Layton puzzles and a silly amount of voice acting (everything is read aloud, mostly pretty well!) and you have yourself a very pleasant bite sized detective adventure game. It’s even made by the Snipperclips folks! Give it a shot!

The 2016 PS Vita role playing game Genkai Tokki Seven Pirates is coming to Switch this spring. The pitch of the game is something along the lines of “flat-chested young pirate girls with a complex about their bust size go on a magic island which grow boobs”. I do not recommend that game.

However, this news reminded me about the unfortunately homonymous Pirates 7, which is a completely different title and a great candidate for a topic about Secret Switch games. It’s a port of a rather obscure but highly rated indie PC game.

Unfortunately, the main reason I can’t recommend it is that Pirates 7 remains a Japan exclusive (both shop-wise and language wise). But if you have access to the Japanese eShop and can confidently waive the language barrier ① Pirates 7 is a much better game than Seven Pirates ② Pirates 7 is a much less embarrassing and morally dubious game than Seven Pirates ③ Pirates 7 offers a pretty sweet “GBA-era Fire Emblem” experience (with a pirate-themed twist) which I think would be especially popular with a bunch of young adult Western players right now ④ Pirates 7 is pretty cheap and its play-through lasts just long enough.

It’s a shame this adorable game is not more well known, not more readily accessible and forever plagued by that other game’s existence in Internet searches.

It was Secret Switch Game-appaloosa on the Japanese eShop this Wednesday. Here is what came out (I am skipping a few less eventful releases) on the same day:

SNK Vs. Capcom Card Fighters Clash
One of the greatest digital card games ever, originally released on an obscure hardware nobody thought would make an official commercial comeback, involving two different IP holders, and the re-release includes the two versions in a single purchase. Also available overseas.

Arcade Archives GunNail
A vertical screen-oriented, FlipGrip-friendly late era NMK flashy shoot’em up that competed with Batsugun in the arcades in 1993. Also available overseas within a few hours.

G-mode Archives Kamura 〜Kamigami to Chigirishimono〜
A seemingly inspired Japanesque RPG, originally released on i-mode with a battle system heavily influenced by Grandia!

VazialSaga: Guminka Senryaku XX
An upgraded port of StudioGIW’s dōjin game VazialSaga, a simple 4X focussed on diplomacy, politics and treason in a feudal pseudo-China. Weighs a glorious 60 megabytes in total. (See a previous post in this thread for more on StudioGIW’s works.)

Duel Princess
A cross between Tower Defense and Slay the Spire with lewd drawings of princesses that get stripped of their clothes when they lose.

Tsukūru Series Game Battle Tycoon
(Unrelated to Battle Tycoon / Flash Hiders.) A mix between a fighting game and a Bishi Bashi-style variety party game developed entirely on the amateur game development engine Pixel Game Maker MV by Retsuzen of Crazy Power Disc fame!

◉◉maru I’ve been playing SNK vs Capcom today, having never played it before. I must say that at first I didn’t quite get the rules of how battles played out - or at least going by the in-game tutorial. It turns out that I’d picked things up pretty quickly once I actually got into a game and I’m enjoying heck out of it.

I’m gonna throw out ‘Hero Hours Contract’ - it’s an SRPG with no fail state about magical girls who work in a convenience store and the quicker you finish the levels the more clout you have in collective bargaining and you can negotiate for better pay (buy items) or more free time (social links). It’s rusty and pretty hostile to play at first, but once it hooked me I played all day and finished it.

Though to be honest I can’t remember which one - but I know a lot of people here picked up those bundles, so chances are, dear forum members, if you are currently reading this message there’s a non-zero chance you already own this game on Itch and not even realize it.

I probably have a number of different things I could post here, but I’ll pitch Strike Force Kitty. It’s kind of a cross between an auto run platform game and a strategy game. Basically, you have a team of four cats who run through each level. You can jump, and your kittens get abilities like breaking certain walls or activating portals to access more paths on the level. When you hit an enemy, your cats stop and start attacking them automatically. You can set up the order of your cats and special abilities to improve, and you can frequently skip certain battles. There are plenty of costumes, most of which are dumb references to things, and you can get a team bonus by dressing up as a set, like all the Ninja Turtles costumes.

It’s a pretty dumb, mindless game, but it’s a pretty enjoyable wind-it-up/watch-it-go time for me. Nice, dopey cartoon music and art, a really silly concept. Fair warning, the menus are pretty counterintuitive, especially the outfit menu.

This one caught my attention because I have a soft spot for Breakout-style games (already mentioned DYA’s Strikey Sisters in this thread, I think), and the eShop listing led me to check out the publisher, PLiCy, who is putting some pretty interesting stuff out there (like Cresteaju ). So I went ahead and picked up Super Shadow Break: Showdown! NINJA VS The Three KAIJUs today:

It’s a souped up version of a Japanese freeware game from 2012 (fun fact: there’s a 2017 Tom Clancy game also called ShadowBreak, which dominates the google results), and there’s some kinda charm to this thing. Music is good and the pixel art kind of reminds me a tad bit of early Super Famicom, but with dense, pleasant little pastel pixels. It really does blow out the concept of Breakout-via-Shinobi-esque-action-platformer with tons of options for both character and ball mobility – one of those games that throws so many techniques at you that you forget to use half of them until you’re really in the zone. And that combo successfully makes for a pretty fun challenge; I feel like I sleepwalk through most Breakouts, but blew through my lives on the first kaiju boss here. Having a good enough time that I’m ready to give it another swing tonight, for sure.

The maker of that game, bunaguchi, has been cranking out neat freeware games for over a decade, some more substantial than others—outside of OG Shadow Break, his Castlevania fan game Soul of Dracula is probably the one that drew the most attention overseas, and I wish more of the people who played that game had gone on to try his later, less derivative games, but what can ya do.

PLiCY took an absolute bath on the Cresteaju loc, from what I’ve heard. but it’s still amazing to me that they even thought to try.

gsk Yeah, I was surprised to see it, but I really appreciate that it’s there and will probably pick it up. I love stumbling across these smaller publishers on the eShop curating such interesting libraries.
