Well thing is, it is the entertainment industry and they need marketing tax write offs and that is what they are.
A big title coming up that is assured to bring in hundreds of millions, hey we need to spend some dough on that fan Battlefield V website founder and a few Youtubers.
It is as simple as that, up until 2k7 or so that included me but actual journalism does not matter anymore so the big and expensive stuff is still around, it just gets distributed to other people.
And no for me it has never been fun, I did appreciate experiencing these things and would not mind being pampered like that again but the Crysis 3 thing I left feeling bad that in just under a week more money was spend on me then I have to live on an entire year.
There was this Nintendo E3 party I remember quite well at the venues next to the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, mingled with all the big names from Japanese game devs and hey even Howard Lincoln was there. Nintendo had flown over their own Kobe beef, there was an ice pyramid decorated with lobsters and everytime someone decided to plate one of the lobsters it was imediatlly replaced with another one. A 6 foot tall Mario ice sculpture had tubes running trough it, cocktail was poured trough it head and glass was ready at its toe so the drink chilled by travelling trough the sculpture.
But exiting the party to head back to my hotel the first thing you see in Hollywood at night are the homeless who come from the shade after the daytime heat.
Some people can block such contrasts out, I cannot.
I did not sleep that night.
