#84 Ace Combat 4

Only ever got around to EB this past Xmas-New Years and recommend anyone who’s had trouble with connecting to copy my experience: have your MIL smoke you up with some dank Covid for Xmas and spend a week vibing with Ness and the gang. Really the perfect sick RPG from the colors, the music, the goal posting and minimal guide checking, the whole package is a cozy blanket and warm cup of tea. It was wonderful.

Ace Combat 4 is a core memory for me. Friday, spring/summer 2003. 12 years old and having a sleepover with my best friend. Mom makes the obligatory Blockbuster stop and we grab the Vin Diesel classic xXx and Ace Combat 4, solely because my friend is a Microsoft Flight Simulator addict, I had a PS2, and the box had planes. Spend a night watching Mountain Dew James Bond be rad while chugging Mountain Dew and scarfing down delicious NJ pizza then riding the caffeine high into the wee hours of the morning FOX TWOing Yellow Squadron all over the skies. Later completed it on my own and the final mission Death Star run was hair raising. Yet to play 7, tried 5 and got halfway thru but the experience around 4 will forever make it my wingman.

I meant to get around to this a whole lot earlier, but stuff got in the way and I've only just now had time to sit down and play around with some numbers.

I‘ll come back over the next while with some extra posts with some more analysis, but for now here’s a really simple one: a breakdown of our combined votes, grouped by decade of game release.

Decade Count
1970 3
1980 101
1990 632
2000 641
2010 631
2020 72
TBD 1
Grand Total   2081

2017 may have been the single most popular year, but the 2000's overall are slightly the most popular decade.

@“rejj”#p128057 Wow!! That‘s amazing how those three decades only have a maximum variance of ten votes. It’s much closer than I would have expected.

Are you curious about your own (or someone else's) breakdown of votes by decade?

The users with the most number of votes for any particular decade are equally @chazumaru and @jeelz for the 1990‘s, and @Snowdecahedron for the 2010’s all with 15 votes.

However the users with the most affinity for any particular decade taking in to account the number of total votes they have cast (as not every member has cast 20 votes) are:

(chaz, jeelz, and snowdecahedron all had 75% affinity, with 15/20 votes within a single decade)

@“phylaxis”#p128077 i wonder how much this all correlates to how old the voter is (like, the ’90s skew of my votes make sense for my age)

Interesting question.

I'm not trailing far too behind the heavy hitters of decade affinity in terms of my affinity for the 2010s, and I am 34. So, at least for me, that tracks in terms of how it's games that were being released after I was in my twenties and had established some more solid critical faculties.

Personally, thinking about how I've approached my lists, I feel that at least sometimes I would purposefully choose to weight something lighter if I have not yet found a time to re-evaluate it since playing it when I was young. And, there's probably a few older games I wouldn't even begin to consider putting on my list even though I loved them as a kid, because I have played them again as an adult, specifically to re-evaluate them. I won't pretend that I'm immune to the idea of forming emotional attachments to things based on having played them first as a kid, but, I suppose I am a dogged skeptic of my own internal sense of nostalgia.

I can't remember everything, but, of the games I submitted that are from before the 2010s, the only one from the 80s is I'm pretty sure _Dragon Quest III,_ which I played as an adult. 2 of my 3 votes for games from the 90s are for _Kirby Super Star,_ which I've definitely re-evaluated as an adult thoroughly from playing _Kirby Super Star Ultra._ The remaining vote for a game from the 90s was my vote last year for _Grandia,_ which is exactly what I was thinking about when I thought of having made a this year decision based on not having gotten around to re-evaluating it yet. Mind you, I was at least a teenager when I played most of _Grandia_ so I don't feel as if nostalgia has misled me about how good that game is, I just didn't feel in good conscience that I could leave it on this year since it's been so long since I've played it.

Of my 4 votes for games from the 2000s, which one could argue a lot of occurs within a nostalgia forming zone for someone born in 1989, one was for _Majora's Mask_ 2 years ago. It was another one I bumped for nostalgia-darling-killing reasons (lingering regret (or perhaps, unintended clarity?) at dropping one of those re-evaluation playthroughs on the 3DS, but, I'm not sure it was because I don't think the game is brilliant), Another was for _Metroid Prime_ this year. In a way, even though I have played it more recently than 2002, I almost feel like I wouldn't _need_ to re-evaluate it, as playing it for the first time and being entranced by kinda felt like an important early awakening of the contiguous critical faculties that I have today. Another is _Gears of War II_ from last year, which I didn't play until the 2010s, and then our vaunted and most beloved **GOD HAND** this year, which I didn't play until the 2020s!

I would be interested to know if any other participants who emphasized a particular decade had a similar internal dialogue, or, what anyone else might feel towards a decade being particularly favored in their responses has anything to do with nostalgia and playing things during formative years, or if it might have to do with having played things during those post-formative times when you finally feel like you have critical faculties. I know there are some old timers around here who can surely say that they had developed critical faculties before the 90s were over, too, so, I know that's not the only reason we have such a weirdly even spread.

@"Gaagaagiins"#p128086 Hey now, blame SEGA not me…

Dear lord almost 1/10th of all 80s votes are mine, and it wasn't even my most voted decade.

That's wild to me. I can understand there being a bit of a drop off but not such an enormous gap between the 80s and the 90s

I was curious while reading @Gaagaagiins’s post above on if there would be any interesting patterns to see comparing a breakdown of each individual decade. If I were to take a stab at an interpretation for what we see here, I‘d say we can see the overall IC population rough age bracket with the increasing prevalence of each year across both the 80’s and 90's. From there onwards it seems to smooth out – the trendlines are not as steep (regardless of their direction).

…and then just because I wanted to see it, here's all of the years (@yeso has already shown this shape (but as a line rather than bars)) but with a 10 year moving average also shown.

This moving average also shows the increase in popularity up until the start of the 2000's, and then everything evens out somewhat.

It also shows that the most popular contiguous set of 10 years was 1996 - 2005, inclusive.
(at 2005 the 10 year moving average is at its peak)

man, 2017 really was a wild year for some games (usa-release-centrically) now that i'm looking at it:

yakuza 0, yakuza kiwami maybe also, dragon quest 11, gravity rush 2, resident evil 7, nier automata, nioh, horizon zero dawn, hollow knight, persona 5, prey, that ff12 rerelease, sonic mania, destiny 2, cuphead, super mario odyssey, legend of zelda breath of the wild, assassin's creed origins, fuckin....fornite technically

and that's not to mention smaller stuff like Everything, THUMPER (shit, did i put this on my best of list? i should have), the sexy brutale (which, what a bad name for a real good game), pyre, obduction, doki doki literature club, night in the woods, gorogoa, yooka-laylee i guess was 2017 if you're into that

i mean yeah i'm sure there are other years that are stacked like this too but wow, big year for games, lots of hot hot stuff and i bet i missed stuff. i even like a lot or most of the games in that list!

2017: the year of overrated games hehe

Well I’m glad we let our basic-ass millennial taste flag fly this year and I’m proud to have done my part. (I say basic of course but there isn’t a single game I’ve played on here that I wouldn’t at least consider recommending to someone, and there is only one other gaming forum on the planet that could conduct a survey like this without at least one BioShock, Kingdom Hearts or God of War showing up.)

That said, you scared the shit out of me listing _Portal 2_ at the top and that was kind of mean.

@“2501”#p128244 And no Mass Effect, no Last of Us, and the only Elder Scroll was Morrowind. Truly a special place.

@“deepspacefine”#p128246 Don’t get cocky, there’s no Baroque or Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days either

@“2501”#p128257 To be fair, Baroque has received several ports with some nice English translation, so I think people would be more able to try it.

### I'm late to the afterparty!

Reading all of this thread in one blast knocked the wind out of me.

This is the first year where I stopped voting with 100% sincerity and began going for the obscure faves. And yet, my top picks from two years ago are mostly there. Next year my choices will be influenced by these results... if I remember, which I won't-- which means next year it's time to go off the deep end and turn it up to eleven.

I never asked for EB to hit the tippity top, this whiplash is so painful!! hahaha I didn't ask for this hahhaha

What was once the obscure underdog is now the mainstream top pick of the alternatives. Earhtbound is now likened to *HOT TOPIC* t-shirts wall, *apropriately*, beside _Green Day_ and _The Who_, _The Beatles Revolver._

As someone who feels *guilt* when I win a single round of SSB or any fighting game, I can only vote masochistically from now on.
My knee jerk reaction is then an self conscious ego-check. Is it a sign of Treefroggy brainrot seeping through the forum? is it egotistical to assume any cult of personality? do I take up too much space on the forum??

### a round of tequila shots on me for everyone who voted *Earthbound*! it's Mommy's Mojito Time!

Alright time to get sloppy

Instead of over-explaining I think one can only describe earthbound's truest value as *a spiritual experience*,

>

@“yeso”#p127132 sappy.

exactly.
It's what some call *Schmaltz*. That's the separating factor. It's from a love of *Michael Landon* type schmatlziness, which is like the closest western culture got to Hayao Miyazaki's idealistic crusade of sincerity.

I'm nearly wrung dry of beating the earthbound drum. I already was when I came here, then I made a huge thread about it. if don't like earthbound, it'll give you a clearer image of exactly why. go skim that --[ just look at the pictures](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/673-mother-like-games-with-twin-peaks-sprinkled-on-top/101).

>

Sentiment is the most powerful means of introducing new ideas … what the world desperately needs is an outstanding personality that can use the arts to lift up humanity in love and equality … the greatest problem holding humans back is racism

The term "Michael Landon Schmaltz" has been used in a way that belittles the sentiments that are exactly what we need to move forward as a society. **_IMHO_**
MOTHER invokes the sentiments of MLK, John Lennon, Michael Landon. **It was the first game where you beat klansmen to a pulp**. It succeeded in getting the message out through the medium of video games to some people, and failed with others. It's the **Jesus Christ Superstar of video games.**

So what first seemed like a larger than life "answer to the mysteries of the universe" in video game form is now just a coming of age stepping stone for the younger me. **It is the Burning Man for video gamers, you go there to wake up. You pay to have the experience. It's still a commercial experience, a shadow of real life experience.**

### moving on,

_____

>

@“yeso”#p126698 2004 was the average year of release

We somehow averaged to the year of climax of video games as we know it.
And by climax, I do not mean the highest point, but the beginning of the end. the last highest point.

>

@“MovingCastles”#p126797 one year I want to see Goemon 64 on a list.

I'm super down for this, but my vote is with Goemon's Great Adventure, not Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. But that kind of attitude is what will keep goemon off the list forever...

@"captain"#p127015 In recent endless Dark Souls datamining news, Lost Izalith makes so much more sense as a deeper swamp, and I'm looking forward to the mod that makes it as such. Will be quite a trip, much more beautiful and fun imho.

Interesting that it would seem like they just said "fuck it, make izalith a hellfire biome". That is all I have to say about Dark Souls because _similar to Earthbound, I am fucking burnt out from talking about it so much._

I'm putting this here, now, instead of like, apple notes app, and it's totally fine because I will probably forget it's here anyway:
Chulip
No More Heroes
Goemon's Great Adventure
Legend of the River King

@“treefroggy”#p129101 I wrote specifically about Tengai Makyō II. And I now realize I still have not played Octopath Traveler… This summer, my “excuses” were the Future Redeemed DLC of Xenoblade 3 and the 23rd Tenkaichi Budōkai of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.
