Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, if you‘re into that sort of thing. In my humble opinion it is a far cry from its PSX big sister - but it’s still a good time.
to all,
thanks!
Attack of the Friday Monsters kicks ass, love that game
I think I'm leaning one chill RPG of moderate length (having just recently completed DQXI (not even the postgame stuff!), 25-30 hours for DQV is looking relatively snacklike) and a couple smaller little hangin out things (new puzzle game or gba bit Generations games perhaps?)
not at all trying to shut this discussion down, I love hearing what games everyone enjoys occupying their traveling time with! for me, returning to Mole Mania almost exclusively on (significantly shorter) train rides to visit siblings
I waited to play/specifically bought Dragon Quest VII* in anticipation of a 16 hour flight, and I didn‘t enjoy it at all. Hope that you have better luck than I did!
*I know that’s a radical position around these parts, but I thought the combat mechanics were not very exciting, and the town exploration slower than slow and the whole thing repetitive and monotonous. I played that game for about 20 hours and didn't feel like I got anywhere or it would change in a more meaningful way. Went Back to Etrian Odyssey, Mario vs. Donkey Kong and…

Some of my favorite DS/3DS games that come to mind:

On that same trip to Japan with just a backpack, where all I brought was my micro with palutena famicom mini, while I was there in Japan I sought and purchased a puzzle game recommended by IC's @bankbank long before I would come to IC, Hatena Satena. I played it on the way back.
Just to throw a nice arcadey game in here, I poured at least a dozen hours into Pop Island - square shaped penguin surfing, interesting controls
Sticking just to 3DS I'll say:
SMT IV - a perfect summer game for me. The music and vibes really transport you and the darkness of the atmosphere contrasts with the lightness of the day in a nice way. Lots of nice train stations too.
SMT devil survivor - a really nice tactics rpg in the SMT world, with a neat time/progression system, all set within the yamanote line stations.
I'll second or third the recommendation of some picross games. I really like the pokemon picross one! It might need wifi for some parts.
Lastly for a left field recommendation, soul of darkness from gameloft. It's a downloadable dsiware game but I think you can still get it. It's a really nice castlevania clone that sits halfway between a modern Vania (attacks, movement, large map) and a classic one (somewhat more linear structure, platforming emphasis). It's gonna be a little blurry on your 3DS but I recommend it ANYWAY.

No matter what you get, have a cool time! Sounds like a lovely trip in many ways.
Oops I ignored that thing you said about falling off long games. Well, get ninja 5-0 for gba on emulator. A perfect action game.
Then get ragna centy if there's a genesis emulator. Great (and importantly charming) arpg that doesn't wear out its welcome. I finished it in 3 nights and had a blast.
And a other 3DS game to get is attack of the Friday monsters! Great summer childhood vibes, only 2-ish hours long, from the boku no natsuyasumi director, absolutely lovely all around and one of my top 3DS recs bar none.
I would just like to say that I have been yelling at people about Attack of the Friday Monsters! since that thing came out & I have never once heard anyone else talk about, so it is extremely nice to see no less than five people who are into it here on these forums.
Those Guild games on the 3DS really seem like good train games for some reason, just an interesting little buffet of stuff as you're croozin along -- I enjoyed Liberation Maiden, Weapon Shop de Omasse, & especially Crimson Shroud. Pocket Card Jockey is real good for passing idle time, & Harvest Moon 3 for Game Boy Color is on there for $5 in the same sort of bucket. And, yeah, like everyone said, you can't go wrong with those 3D Sega Classics
Mostly, though, that sounds like a really good time, snack. Hope you enjoy yourself.
@tokucowboy#27189 Oh yeah, Pocket Card Jockey is superb, I spent an entire Christmas break playing that. I found myself bonding with my horses and getting sad as I waved goodbye to the aging, retired ones. It‘d easily eat anyone’s time on a long journey.
inject some GBA games, like
