All That Jazz

Good starting point there might be Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch, which Yoshihide did a full album cover of:

If you like Miles Davis’s more out there stuff any of his 2nd Quintet bandmates are a good jumping off point

For free jazz stuff Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor are pretty good intros

Final recommendation on the more noisy chaotic side is John Zorn’s stuff

Just want to drop in some more modern jazz musicians I like:

Nubya Garcia:

Alfa Mist (and Mansur Brown on the guitar that comes in towards the end)

Okvsho:

Nala Sinephro:

Not a specific music recommendation, but I watch this video every once in a while, I know nothing about jazz singing but this sounds so impressive!

finally…I am free

Just going to post some links of jazz/jazz-adjacent music I’ve been listening to. Perhaps someone will find something interesting here:

  1. Triosk Meets Jan Jelinek: ambient musician meets experimental jazz band, has a general ‘fever dream’ vibe to it + some more calming tracks. lots of electronic and sample-based textures. sounds interesting and weird. Here’s a good idea of it:
  1. I’ve been diving into Madlib’s jazz quintet – Yesterday’s New Quintet[1] Lovers of Madvillainy will find the same heavily textures samples and grooves in their debut album. I love the Prelude a lot but the rest of the album is much more jazzy in nature.
  1. This single jazz track from Flying Lotus’ Until the Quiet Comes. Sounds very ethereal and I really love it.

  1. On the groovier side, I present to you Shigeto’s Detroit Part II – sure it can be classified as electronic dance music but it has enough jazz instrumentation in there to be included in this thread imo

  1. this is not a real Quintet but a fake band created by Madlib ↩︎
