Arcade & Barcade Reviews

@treefroggy#23467 I clicked “like” as in “unlike” the closures.

@vegetables#23507 whaaaaat? and how can I order this pop up?? lol

@p3ters#23527

Oh! Here's the [website ](https://www.perillala.com/)to order. We mostly update on the instagrams, but the website is a good place to see if you even want to order haha. The big thing we do is banchan, but we also have some other things. Definitely let me know if you do end up ordering!

@vegetables#23535 oh sweeet! except everything is sold out lol :frowning:

dang everything looks good tho, I wanna buy all the stuff!

in my hood, downtown Santa Ana, there's a 4th Street Market which I think also had pop up kitchen space for ppl, but not sure how much the rate is.

and it's by the local barcade too! let's cook stuff!! lol

@p3ters#23552 You know what‘s in that area sort of, that game store in… fullerton?… Had a sit down Pole Position cabinet, Castlevania NES arcade…. that’s mainly what I remember. Pole Posish was nonfunctioning when I went there… So much arcade and epic nerdy stuff in OC! All my homies in OC have arcades and CRTs and stuff. lol

You also have like, 3 Round 1's and a ton of BOOK-OFFs!!!

>

@treefroggy#23566 All my homies in OC have arcades and CRTs and stuff. lol

LOL oh mans, I feel so called out here.

I live in a tiny 1BR condo with three CRTs and a Pinball Machine haha.

and yeah, Lost Levels in Fullerton! I've mentioned them a few times on this forum, they're a game store that has a pay-by-the-hour arcade in it! I went there on a date once to play Virtual On lol, and lately they teased they'll be adding some new pinball games, including the latest TMNT one.

@treefroggy#23467 Retro Game Camp RIP. So sad.

@KennyL#23687 christ

that waddle doo is coo

@p3ters#23676 Yeah not only did I used to hang out at Lost Levels but I saw Oi Skal Mates play at some venue in fullerton!

OK look, I haven‘t been to any of these places in over a year because of obvious reasons. But here’s what I think of the various arcades in greater Portland, Oregon that sell beer. Hopefully this situation will change and the links will be updated overtime.

[Ground Kontrol](https://groundkontrol.com/) is the big one in China Town/Old Town near the west side of the Burnside Bridge. This is the "boring" answer but like... it's great fun. I went here for a portion of my bachelor party over a decade ago and I still go here about every year or so because it's fun. They have live music, cheap beer, beers on taps, and snacks. They have a ton of great pinball games and I went there once and played Capcom vs. SNK 2 and lost all night. It was fantastic.

Oh, and as the resident in-game bathroom expert on this forum (I should really really really rethink my personal brand) the bathrooms at Ground Kontrol lead off [this listicle of the 13 best bathrooms in Portland](https://www.oregonlive.com/trending/2016/10/13_of_the_best_bathrooms_in_po.html).

[Quarter World](https://www.facebook.com/quarterworld.portland) is another of the big popular ones and... I think they may have gone out of business from COVID. Their Facebook page is a year old and their domain seems to be expired, so I'm not sure. I've been there several times over the years for meet ups when the the Portland Retro Gaming Expo is in town. Their games seem to be a mix of older less fun ones (I don't want to play _Bad Dudes_) and newer ones like the _[Star Wars Battle Pod](http://www.starwarsbattlepod.com/)_ which has a very immersive wrap-around cockpit and I love to death.

[Apex ](https://www.apexbar.com/)is more of a beer bar in that it doesn't serve food (that I remember). They do have a cool agreement with the Mexican place they share a building and outdoor seating area with. The Mexican place will ask if you are over at Apex and they'll bring the delicious food to you. As far as games go, they mostly have pinball and they mostly have newer ones. It's been the only time I've seen Jersey Jack pinball machines (they had _Wizard of Oz_ several years ago) in the wild.

I've been past the [Next Level Pinball Museum](http://nextlevelpinballmuseum.com/) a few times and stopped to check it out, but that was right before COVID and I didn't want to pay the $20 cover at lunch time to just walk around. All their games are set to free play though so if you're going to be there for a while, I suspect it's a good value. Their space is huge and I'm excited to go back assuming they survive the pandemic. Dunno what their food situation was/is.

I've only been to [Wedgehead ](https://wedgeheadpdx.com/)once in February 2020 right before COVID lockdown. They have food, (vegan options too), lots of beer and a full bar, and lots of pinball games. I got irrationally excited to play _[Total Nuclear Annihilation](https://www.spookypinball.com/games/)_ and got into a minor argument with one of my best friends about if pinball is/is not all the same table-to-table and the theming is just pictures. He's wrong, but he hasn't joined the IC forums to refute me publicly.

FAC IS BACK

I’m here all night for the FAC grand reopening and they have all the goodness of before but with even more. $25 free play all night

  • - everything repaired
  • - Daytona USA 2 has hydraulics on both sides
  • - many 480p CRTs in glorious condition, many of SEGA's 90's 3D games.
  • - the only game from before that is sorely missed by me is Konami POLICE 911
  • edit: removed copious photos that were all rotated by imgur for some reason.

    Also missing:

    Raiden 2

    Twinkle Star Sprites

Shooters are missing, all we got is MAME and aero fighters

Also the game where you actually punch a thing as hard and fast as you can is missing.... I think it was by taito or some Japanese company.
Also sorry imgur rotated my photos for some reason, you can tell it was posted in the heat of the moment--- I beat House of the Dead 1 for the first time with my homie that night. I've beaten HotD 2 before this, just so you all don't think I'm a total HotD poseur, I've also played Typing of the Dead under many different circumstances, that's my favorite.

Standup driving cabinets, and driving cabinets in general, but especially standing ones utterly destroy my knees because I am over 6'2", but I had some fun drifting in Outrun 2 and Daytona 2. Especially glad to see Outrun2 SP even though it's not on a CRT, because every time I've been to the santa monica pier arcade I'm reminded that they gutted an outrun2sp cabinet to make a shitty multicade thing :/

Arcades are reopening across the nation this weekend… post your reviews! I got invited to club eighty two last night but didn’t go because I hate that place!

I'm here hanging out at my local pinball parlor right now having a grand ol time!!

    [upl-image-preview url=//i.imgur.com/1dnRkQF.jpeg]

So happy they made it through the pandemic and they even added a bunch of new machines!!

10/10 would drink beer and play pinball here again.

And the local Round 1 opened up. Their selection is pretty meh but I go there for one reason.

    [upl-image-preview url=//i.imgur.com/7YIU7wc.jpeg]

So yeah... It's nice to be able to play sit down Outrun 2 after a year plus of not having access to it!

last night my partner and i visited the 1-Up Videogame Bar and Lounge in Bellingham, WA. not sure if it qualifies as a “bar cade” since it's all consoles connected to appropriate displays, mostly CRTs. they had mario 3 + world, several varieties of mario kart, halo, guitar hero…so pretty standard package of nostalgia bait with some emphasis on party games. i did see sonic 3 on a PVM in the corner which was pretty cool. we ended up playing portal 2 on a sony wega for an hour or so…nice dude

we may go again but not order drinks. the drink recommended by the bartender was (click at own risk) || Princess Panties ||...this dealt me massive psychic damage, rendering me unable to order it. i got something else which was not good. many of the cocktails were made with mountain dew or energy drinks. yes we get it dude...anyway it may not really be "for" a lot of the people on this forum but we had a great time playing portal!

@tapevulture oh hey I live in Bellingham!! if you're ever nearby we should arcade together.

i haven't been to 1up, the only one in the area I've gone into is the barcade attached to Reset Games. it was okay; fun for a night, cool Initial D cabinets, some okay pinball, but nothing I'd go back for. only dance game was camped the entire night by a SUPER intense guy who was clearly a regular.

@treefroggy where can I find outrun 1 and 2 machines in LA? Maybe some F-Zero AX and ridge racers as well :eyes:

Yesterday, I returned to little tokyo for the first time since 2018 about.

I didn‘t know that once Retro Game Camp had closed, World 8 opened a new location in Little Tokyo Jungle underground shopping plaza, World 8-2. It’s nearly identical to Retro Game Camp, except 50% of the store is now for new games and western games, and the other 50% is all import retro games. They still do business with the previous owner Shinosuke, and bought up his stock. Overall seems a less sincere operation, but I‘m glad there’s still a retro game store there. Prices were pretty similar from what I could tell. Basically market price, with plenty of $5-$15 games for any console. They had a lot more loose Japanese HuCards that I recall being at Retro Game Camp.

Then I weight to Eighty Two, just to see what was in there. The DJ was setting up so I didn‘t stick around long enough for them to begin blasting terrible music like they always do, lol. Even without the DJ, it was still impossible to hear the games like Outrun, which is still there, in a stand-up Outrunners cabinet which destroys my knees playing it that way.

Stuff of interest that I don’t see often was Super Contra (TATE MODE), SEGA World Series 99, Virtua Cop 2, the rest was stuff I recall being there before or too common to mention.

Obviously I was most impressed by World Series 99.

Edit: @fugazi57 sorry I missed your question. Eighty-Two has outrun 1 and F.A.C. has outrun 2. Go to every single Round 1 and smaller arcade in the tri county area looking for f-zero and ridge race-‘ems and write your reviews here.

Edit 2: cheap hucards at world 8-2! I almost thought about getting fire pro 2 but I shouldn’t… lol

I was also very distracted. I should have gotten unsexy mahjong

Yoo I gotta check that out! Also don‘t think I’ve played Virtua cop on a cab.

On other LA barcade updates- Button Mash reopened! But they got rid of their menu and partnered with Tacos 1986 who is now doing the food and service. Pretty bummed about that. They filled another room with ticket type machines. Rest of the arcade is the same from before lockdown.

The I/O Arcade Bar is the popular place to go for adults both young and old to have a drink and get together to play some games. Located downtown it's walkable and its clean interior is inviting to those unfamiliar with the arcade scene. The drinks are good and the games work all the time and if not there's always an out of order sign. They host a number of events, have an overall welcoming atmosphere and they have Killer Queen, Pacman: Battle Royale and Deathball. The downside is this barcade is a little small and lacking in character. You won't have a bad experience here, and you'll probably have a good time but this is firmly in the 7/10 star territory.

Aftershock Classic Arcade has big shoes to fill and it hasn't filled 'em yet! Previously home to "Maria's" - a part arcade/part bar/part underground music and art venue - the Aftershock arcade isn't living up to the recent memory of the place. Where there was once a handful of endearing games including the beloved "Ice Cold Beer" cabinet, also known as "Zeke's Peak", this arcade is now home to a myriad of broken machines mixed between games you never really cared for. They insist on you purchasing tokens to use in their machines and that's part of the issue. They were designed for quarters and it looks like quarters still work! The tokens gum up and ruin the machines, leaving what appears to be the best ones inoperable. Many multiplayer games that required both coin slots didn't work either, leaving one person to wait while the other played alone. Our party got bored with more than half our tokens left and we couldn't even take them home to do laundry! Some cabinets had bad screens, and the whole place felt dirty and cheap and not in a nostalgic way. This used to be such a cool venue! Now it feels like an old Chuck E. Cheese. It hasn't been open for too long, so they may turn it around but for now I would not even bother. However, if you're looking to play Dragon's Lair, they have it! It was my first time experiencing the impossible but fascinating looking game.

Geek's mania isn't as slick as the I/O, or as dirty as the Aftershock, and it doesn't serve alcohol. But what it does serve is a whole lot of pinball for a one time payment of 15 dollars. They also feature a large variety of other games including skeeball and the like and they host parties. It's a family friendly joint and you're likely to run into a lot of kids, but I think kids are cool and there's a good chance you have them so why are you anti kid? If you need drinks it appears there is a bar in the Radison hotel meters away. This place feels a little like an office went out of business and an arcade moved in but they lean into it in a good way. I had a good time and you probably will too. Bonus points for being near a bowling alley, an escape room and a board game shop called Pegasus Games. What board game fan could resist a shop with that name? I don't even really like board games and I like it! Okay but you get what I'm saying this is the daytime place to play with the family or to get a couple hours of pinball practice in. There's even billiards and... what's this? A themed party room called the [ Nintendo Room?](https://geeksmania.com/party-rentals) With its own refrigerator and what may or may not be a photo booth? Intriguing...

I haven't been here yet. But that logo gets a solid 9. The game list is impressive. I saw that a big time development wanted to tear down the old building this is in, but NerdHaven had a long term lease and they said "Hey, it's not in our best interests to move" so that's that! Development cancelled. I'll have to check it out.
