Welp, I remember a lot of discussion here after the US election. Now it’s Canada’s turn for uncomfortable uncertainty!

Our prime minister stepped down today. He’s very unpopular right now. I don’t know politics very well so I’m not really sure what’s next as the liberal party chooses a new leader. The conservative party has gained a lot of traction up here as, just like in the US, Canada lost confidence in the liberals. I’ve heard people refer to them as a mini republican party. I’m not looking forward to our election.

Hope all the LA homies are safe! Reminds me of the fires we had in the Bay Area in 2020

we live across from Griffith Park so it’s a lil sketchy. i’ve never seen anything like this.

It’s insane. Heartbreaking, scary, and eerie footage. An easy joke to make these days but it feels like we’re living in the b-roll for an Adam Curtis movie.

My heart breaks so much hearing about the animals left behind to die.

God, scrolling on Twitter has never been more depressing.

Not only do you have to sift through so much AI Slop and bots, but so many of the worst people on earth have been emboldened. I can’t read anything about LA without hundreds of comments along the lines of

  • “Sodom and Gomorrah”
  • “Serves the Hollywood elites right”
  • “failed state run by demotards”
  • “Jews started the fire”
  • “The fire started because God is punishing the jews”
  • “Junkies started the fire”

UPDATE: actually, apparently the reason the fire started is because there are too many DEI/Black firefighters and not enough white dudes with mustaches firefighters

I even saw an unironic throwback to the “you can prevent forest fires by raking the leaves in the forest” claim Trump made like 6+ years ago

It’s all just so stomach-churning. I’m not from LA, I’m from NorCal, but I feel a really strong affinity for my state and it’s frustrating to be so continuously disrespected

…also is this a bad time to say that I’ve been planning to movie to LA in ~4 months :grimacing:

their whole purpose in saying things like that is to get attention, so they have to act fast.

Yeah I feel the same, also from the Bay(still live here) but generally feel pretty defensive of the whole state because of how it’s perceived. Sucks to know people rejoice that harm comes to people who live here.

I’m a little freaked out that my partner’s parents house is going to burn down.

I used to live right in Hollywood on one of the streets that evacuated, and crazy to think where I’d be tonight if I hadn’t moved up north. Nature is bigger than all of us. Heavy winds and fire could happen anywhere at any time, people on social media need some humility.

After this week, the city’s definitely going to pour more resources into firefighting, so in some ways 4 months from now will be the safest time to move.

My wife, dog and I live on the east side of LA hugging the left most evacuation boundary of the Eaton Fire. We packed up what we could in a rush this morning and went to our friends’ place in Hollywood. The Sunset Fire kicked off early this evening just north of them so we continued further south to Long Beach and are being put up by other friends.

The three of us are safe and we had enough time to load up some of our sentimental items, but yea, been a difficult day. I worry our home will be gone by the end of the week.

It’s so crazy because we have nobody watching the house so like… hope it’s still up in the morning.

Yeah I’ll save anything I have to say on the matter respectfully and just say I know many people who’ve had their whole place burn down, some places I’ve stayed at, it’s just limited to the hills but that’s still a lot, it’s a once in a century natural disaster. I was scheduled to fly back tomorrow but I postponed it to monday. And I’m fucked in more ways than one due to this but hopefully there will be wiggle room for the very same reason. Like my vehicle registration is getting suspended and the DMV is closed.
I will say it can be hard to differentiate the truth from media sensationalism. If you are far south from the hills, for example, like south of the santa monica pier, you are in no danger (aside from shitty air quality), and no need to evacuate, no danger of it spreading there. But many transplants I know have been scared and questioning if they need to evacuate and the answer is no, we aren’t going anywhere.

@Hunter don’t move to the hills. though a lot of young professionals have been moving to eagle rock, highland park, etc. area and that place is being evacuated. It was a bad sign when we didn’t get any rain all year.

This is reassuring, in that I haven’t missed anything by avoiding social media for the past 15 years. And have likely gained a lot peace of mind by being so unaware of the trash people post these days.

I check news headlines on a few sites just to be aware of what’s happening generally, and I never read comments anywhere.

I won’t harp on it, but I’ll say it once: I implore you to do yourself a great kindness and simply log out and delete twitter.
