I don’t think there will ever be anything wrong with calling yourself an Old School or Old Skewl Gamer though. Just maybe not Old Skool, I think because branding has ruined that one for me… That’s pretty good, unpretentious shorthand.
I do be referring to hardware as antiques a lot.
I study the classics
short, sweet, to the point. I love it.
Do you feel that the term “retro gaming” is overused and has had its meaning distorted, or what’s the reason for wanting to change?
eat life by the bowlful
Well, for one, my memory is fuzzy but I’m pretty sure Frank Cifaldi has openly lambasted the term.
I think, for me, personally, it’s the same way the mainstream term “gamer”, when I first started hearing it around 2002/2003, caused me to cringe and I did not want to be associated with it. Now I feel the same about Retro Gaming… (albeit less intensely because I am now in my thirties and have self esteem.)
And, yeah, it’s just become so much of a Marketing Term.
If only “retro gam(er/ing)” were a marketing tern.
In seriousness, at least on the tchotchke part of the retro gaming market, I’ve noticed how such marketing targets friends and family. I have several who know I play games and must think, “Oh, this will be perfect for my gamer friend.” Sometimes it is - what I wouldn’t get myself ends up being something I would wear or use as a gift.
In other words, it’s like the market category of dad gift or mom gift. “I don’t know what to get my mom - oh, this bath bomb bouquet will be perfect for my mom.”
Sometimes people see my crt and they are like what is that for??? And if i say you know, retro gaming! Their eyes light up and they understand immediately so that’s convenient at least
Can anyone direct me to a place where I can watch lucha libre?
That’s a pretty broad question.
Are you looking for Mexican wrestling in general? There are the two big Mexican promotions, AAA and CMLL, but myself, I’m not too sure how one watches their taped events.
Are you looking for a currently active promotion and broadcast schedule? If not, you could try watching Lucha Underground. If was a, well, an even more scriptedand pre-recorded thing that ran for 4 seasons, but was cancelled. I didn’t care for it myself, something about how the shape of a “season” being pre-planned just kind of took the magic out of it for me. The wrestling, though, was consistently great, so if that’s what you’re looking for that might be a great place to dip your toe in.
I asked a friend what he would cook for a date and he said “pasta” which is obviously the wrong answer. Way too easy/low effort. But then I realized I’m not sure what the correct answer is.
So, what is the best dish to cook on a date?
The only wrong answer to this, is something that they do not like.
If their favourite dish is pasta, and make the effort of making it from scratch and going all out on presentation. I’d say that’s the right answer.
fresh pasta (easier with a pasta maker, but you can do it with a rolling pin + forearm strength) and the best mushrooms you can find (morel/porcini/chantrelle/etc) would actually be a great way to go. Show off some real kitchen skill, doesnt take forever to prepare, and the dish is hard to mess up. Frees you up to make a nice dessert to really flex
But if your friend is doing a box of barila + newman’s own marinara then thats a different story ofc lol
Perfect answer, I’ll try Lucha Underground! I’m exploring it all for the first time.
@Gaagaagiins Bounced off of Lucha Underground, so I’m looking at your first two suggestions now.
Get oysters and be sure to say “Did you know oysters are an aphrodisiac?” a couple times throughout the night without breaking eye contact.
In all honesty it’s good to set expectations at a “medium”. Don’t buy a giant ribeye steak or spend hours making a mole sauce. Don’t make your date risk food poisoning or anything that could look gross while eating. Go light on garlic or avoid it and anything that might leave an strong aftertaste on your breath. A simple crowd pleaser like a pork chop or a veggie stir fry or grilled salmon with a glass of wine sets a good baseline. Then for a special occasion bust out the more elaborate recipe.
i don’t know if i’d call it a date but the last time i cooked something elaborate for someone was a fermented garlicky ramen so i broke all your rules lol
also if one has the tools and know how to make a good unique homemade pizza i feel like it would work pretty nicely in a date.
a few months ago i made this vegan szechuan chimichurri steak pizza for someone in a non-date situation but i feel it would have worked on a date situation.
plus you can look hot while tossing the dough
