This is a perfect explanation of what I love about it. Also I like how unlike in II and IV where the Dragon transformation is basically just a stylized way of giving the main character usually prohibitively expensive damage spells, there’s more depth to it and you can control the dragon forms in battle.

played BoF 1, 2 and 3 (didn’t finish 3 cause life) last year. ended up absolutely despising 2. not even after grinding for a whole hour could i confortably explore without dying on the random encounters. changed to a double xp/money rom and got a littke bit further but didn’t click with me. maybe someday i’ll try 2 again but want to get back to 3 asap.

I didn’t look at this thread for like 2 days and there were 70 posts

in order:

I wanna be Wapeach

floor is clean(er), if youre in an unfinished basement or garage with cement that’s ground, if hardwood is messy that’s ground, if you’re in a tent that’s the floor

decks are a unique thing but similar to other outdoor structures like docks, gazebos, patios, probably all floors because of the care that are put into making them and maintaining them

aren’t all the Breath of Fire games good? should I just skip to 3? I’m really bad at playing big JRPG serieses

Oh my god, I have this exact same one. It was my dad’s and he gave it to me when I went to college. It’s mostly lived in my kitchen since then. I love it. The speaker is surprisingly good on the radio.

When you are searching the ocean of stars for true love do you value INTEGRITY and FAITHLESSNESS?

I don’t think any of them are any less than decent but 3 is probably the one that is most straightforwardly good. If you want to make sure you finish one and get sidetracked easily if all of the games are substantial, 3 is the most dependable choice.

Dragon Quarter almost doesn’t even count as a Breath of Fire game just because it’s such a radical departure. Like, they’re two traditional 16 bit JRPGs, two delicious throwback traditional JRPGs with nice PS1 ass graphics and sound and art direction, and, uh, a game that is already just hard to describe in one sentence with some visual and thematic references to the other four games.

Which BoF has the best story and characters and how does the series’ storytelling compare to other RPGs?

I’m reading Jojolion and this man referring to the sidewalk as “the floor” reminded me of this thread

I don’t have an exceptionally well-informed opinion because as I said I’ve never actually finished any of 'em, but I’ll give at least some high level thoughts.

Firstly, I still won’t speak about Dragon Quarter, for similar reasoning as above, but you probably already know that.

The series as a whole I think has an interesting relationship to its own genre and that genre’s tropes and conventions. Like, on the surface level, you play as a Very Special Boy who has world-saving contrived on to him. But all of that in the Breath of Fire series is explored in a way that is a little more tragic and complex and thus interesting, while also not sacrificing the sort of juvenile cool factor of being a certain sort of special fateful shounen boy.

I also like the worldbuilding as a whole because it’s on one hand serviceable mid-to-high fantasy stuff, but with enough contour and enough commitment to that mid part of the mid-to-high fantasy designation to not come off as generic. At least in III there’s questions of social class being asked, technology and ecology are parts of the world at least gestured at, and I feel like at least II and III give an interesting sense of mystery to the history and myth of the world. Also I love how there’s all these anthro animal guys everywhere, and just really all sorts of interesting looking Guys to meet or fight or just to be hanging out in the background. CapGod’s reputation for cool character designs has been longstanding.

I’d be less able to talk about individual games, though, and even less able to talk about how the stories end up wrapping up, but, hey, as far as I know, to my knowledge few if any people talk about Breath of Fire III having a disappointing story direction overall, and I like all of what I have experienced in the several times throughout the years I’ve played it.

I have less opinions about the two 16-bit entries, perhaps they’re a product of their time in terms of their stories being especially substantive and meaningful. I don’t remember too much about the story from II, which doesn’t speak too highly of it, as I played a good deal of it not that long ago. I certainly don’t remember disliking it, but, maybe it isn’t anything too special either.

My memories of IV are also very hazy but I do remember it just not feeling like it had the same kinds of hooks as III, and I at least didn’t prefer it’s more angsty and serious tone. I wouldn’t be able to say whether III or IV are substantially stronger or weaker than the other in that regard.

I think overall III is the gem, it’s certainly at least the most well-rounded entry. I have always felt despite maybe a bit of a slow intro section, the early to midgame has fantastic narrative hooks once it really starts to pick up and develop, which doesn’t take too long from my recollection. I also like the characters, particularly the party member characters, who are diverse and all individually charming.

During yesterday’s stream of Thank Goodness You’re Here!, a guy picking up litter in the park said he hoped someone wouldn’t come burst his bags of litter and make it fly “all over the place,” and the subtitles rendered this as “all over the floor.”

I feel like I’ve seen a bunch of developers here so I’m curious as for their thoughts on the push of gen AI in the development pipeline. For my job I recently learned some teammates use gen AI while I remain against using it. I also see a big push from management for us to use it.

Curious what other devs thoughts are on using genAI? Any experiences with management forcing use of AI in development?

I’m a senior PM on a platform team so I’m close friends and colleagues with our devs and so far there’s been no push for them to embrace AI but I do know some of them use Copilot

My PM colleagues are absolutely ruining their skillset by going whole hog into AI and the hallucinations have already caused huge kerfuffles

Not really.

There are definitely a few people who would say I am cool, perhaps even the coolest person they know, but if you look at the historical record I am definitely not cool. Cool people are easily identifiable by certain traits and experiences that I lack, and that’s fine

I think if you’re cool, you’ll send me an RTX 5090 and a Steam key for Monster Hunter Wilds. That’s a pretty good sign that you’re cool as heck.

Maybe they can make me Very Special.

I own a couple cool jackets, but that doesn’t make me cool, necessarily. Especially when I’m not wearing them.

Reminds me of when a friend of mine claimed that Bruno Mars is the coolest person on the planet. This was even before Silk Sonic was even a thing.

As someone who owns both a leather jacket and a bomber jacket, can confirm. They have not made me cool.
