controller talk

Interrupting sub-posting to mention that there is a new colorway for the 8bitdo M30 and it is very good:

Anyways time to copy Keita Takahashi‘s custom Xbox controller on the xbox design lab site, because I don’t think anyone is going to create a better xbox controller design than he.

ohh also the first one he posted before going with the yellow one… I like this one too…

Anyone ever replace a dead/drifting PS5 controller joystick? If so, got any suggestions on where to source the part? iFixit seems reliable, but they're out of stock

Bonus points awarded if you go crazy and suggest hall sensor joysticks. I'm already tearing into a controller. May as well go all in!

@antillese

ALPS in the manufacturer of the analog stick that's in there. I usually get them from any reliable ebay seller and have had good results.

@“treefroggy”#p120745 I did this!

Unfortunately the triggers they use for these custom controllers seem more brittle than the regular ones…. This happened after only six months of normal use :(

@“sabertoothalex”#p120787 ahhhhhh! I‘m still on the fence about buying one of these (I need paddles if I’m gonna get a dedicated pc controller man)…. and this does have me pulling back a bit!.. did you drop it?

that's so cool you already got the takahashi controller though.

If there's one thing he's the master at, it's [choosing the order of colors](https://i.imgur.com/TgTSBc6.png), and which colors go where.

this is the only controller I can use currently:

it's okay! now that I'm using it I want to get the saturn one, and the PS2 one which is analog! but those are both pricier and harder to find, not having been released in the US. The PS2 one looks made up, or like a hack, frankly.

@“treefroggy”#p120790 I didn’t drop it! I noticed after a few months that it has a very light crack and then a couple sessions later it just split open. Huge bummer because none of my other Xbox controller feel like these triggers so it makes me think it’s a different material.

Finally got the little violet 24mm sanwa buttons in the mail and, with that, my 8bitdo arcade stick mod is complete:

@“kory”#p120813 the colors look great! nice work.

It's such a great time for controllers.

I was a huge fan of the 8bitdo Pro 2 before, because it does provide great bang for the buck as an all-around controller for consoles & PC... But it does have it's flaws along with the sn30 pro. The D-pad has a ton of marketing, but despite it's look and initial feel, with the SN30 pro dpad I have constant miss-inputs, and the pro 2's dpad comes squeaky out of the box and needs to be worn down, but remains somewhat squeaky at certain angles. wearing it down also generates a ton of microplastic dust-- on the clear version of the controller, this takes the form of a large white smudge surrounding the dpad. This would be something I could fix with a bit of lubrication, but for whatever reason, 8bitdo makes some of the least-user-serviceable controllers on this market. they use security screws that aren't difficult at all for me to bypass, but after that, the controller is a mess of a puzzle to dissasemble, and you can easily damage and break it trying to do so. Things are often held in with clips. It's lame. Still, they are both in my rotation! The sn30 pro is probably the best retro style dual analog since the wii classic controller, and the pro 2 is still the best PS4 style controller with paddles.

I’m grateful we live in an age with this retro replica controller arms race, with several companies competing. Old Skool always made crap-tier stuff, and it seems like they're catching up to the newer companies. The influx of Mini consoles has put a ton of relatively cheap, oem-adjacent replicas out there, and generated a ton of demand.
Retro-bit, 8bitdo, and Old Skool are now directly competing over niche products like the classic HORI GCN Gameboy Player controller, and six buttons SEGA pads. We've often got options for both 2.5ghz and bluetooth. Things just keep getting better and better!

Recently I got my first NSO controller, a super Famicom pad, and I am in love with it. Nothing beats OEM quality like this. the buttons aren't as PC/Xbox poppy like stuff like the sn30 is going for, it's nice and smooth like 90's era controllers always were. I would really like to be able to acquire the family computer and N64 NSO controllers as well.

It's wild to me how we now have *redundancy* for replica controllers. In the upper echelon of SNES pads, you have SNES mini, NSO, 8bitdo sn30 and more!

there's also 2.5gz and bluetooth dongles coming out every day for vintage consoles... incredible...

before this, we only had the Wii Virtual Console snes replicas that were super expensive and hard to get!!

I'm just so hopeful for the future now. Controllers get so much wear on them, as they are used there will be less and less out there. When a controller costs over $100 and is over 30 years old, it becomes too good to be sullied by your oily animal palms.

I really like the DualSense (PS5 controller). Feels nice to hold for a long-ish finger haver, I like the thud rather than click of the buttons and I love all the trigger resistance and the haptics in the controller.

I have that USB Saturn controller that I want to use more because it feels and looks really nice.

I am a big fan of the size, weight and trigger position on the WiiU controller. Love that thing.

One thing that I'd like to ask controller enjoyers: I really don't like how loud and clicky the buttons on Xbox controllers are. The noise is loud and sharp. Does this bother anyone else and if so, have you done anything to mod it?

Popping in to just share the Pippin Atmark controller, neither the console nor controller was I aware of till seeing it in a hardoff display case for ¥169000 yesterday. The controller looks like a OG PS3 banana with a goddarn trackball in the middle! Genius. I’d rather have a trackball than a trackpad, Sony, get on it.

8bitdo's NeoGeo clicky pad just popped up - perfect timing for the MiSTer NeoGeo-CD core.

Comes out in August for $35. There are 4 KOF character decal variants for $5 more.

nice, I was able to nab an NSO N64 controller, they restocked two hours ago. I have limited funds so I wasn't able to get the sega genesis pad, which is probably for the best, haha.

I just barely missed a pair of NSO famicom controllers for ~$40, on the eve of famicom’s 40th birthday. :man_shrugging:

I‘ve been working on a display of controllers for my office and it’s coming along pretty nicely:

Some I haven't used yet but all in good time. I'm so glad to have the clear Saturn ones as I used to have a This is Cool Saturn and the aesthetics of that blew my mind and it's still my favourite controller of all time! I still have a few more random ones around but can't get a good layout.

I'll be dammed if I can work out how to mount this though...

@“copySave”#p120261 How do your rate the sticks on the GuliKit compared to the Switch ones? I've always Used a pro controller which I love, never had a problem with drift but am noticing a diffence in how responsive the sticks are and this looks like a great alternative. Is it worth the upgrade?

@“TomoftheFog”#p124597 After about 60 hours with it in Zelda, I'd say they are pretty great. Since the sticks kinda float due to the magnetic sensors, there is no subtle potentiometer resistance (e.g. grind) of traditional control stick. The stick assembly feels right too, not too loose in spite of the reduced components and friction.

Only complaint was the B button was a bit rubbery and would occasionally stick when I first used it, but that went away after breaking it in after a few days. For only $10 more than OEM I'd recommend it. Good battery life too of around 20 hours per charge. After 5 years I can probably give a solid review - lol.

A teardown of the hardware internals for the sticks with comparison to traditional ones:

Being able to use this on the PC in X-Input mode is a pretty sweet deal too.

@“copySave”#p124608 Great review there - thanks for that. I was pretty interested before but the X-Input mode has me sold
