i’ve been going on twitter for close to 15 years now and i still have the habit of checking particular accounts on there for laffs and general news aggregation.
however, it is jaw-dropping how racist and hateful that website is now. 8/10 posts on the front page look like they are pulled from stormfront circa 2007. just blatant bigotry, and somehow the replies are even worse.
the remaining 2/10 posts, at least on my feed, are videos of murdered palestinians or isreali accounts defending genocide. every time i visit the site, i swing between disgust, despair, and anger with the occasional wry smile toward a funny meme.
like i said, i have a very ingrained habit of visiting that site that is hard to break, but i shudder to think about what it is doing to my brain chemistry when my mind reflexively tries to tie all these things together into a coherent narrative about the world. or perhaps it really is just the state of the world that is making me shudder.
there’s not much to say about the state of affairs, but it really stops me in my tracks sometimes.

I’m again not saying anything that you (collective, plural form) don’t already know, but: simply logging out and deleting the app would be doing yourself a massive kindness. It is not a place of honour, nothing of value is buried there. It was dangerous in our time just as it is in yours.
Also, even though you didn’t specifically mention the topic, have you considered that farm attacks are real and brutal, perhaps linked to and motivated by things such as Kill the Boer?
(note: the above last bit is (hopefully) obviously a joke about how twitter’s stupid AI bot went full white supremacist after “someone” made “unauthorised, unsupervised changes” to it. at 3am.)

also, it’s been driving me insane but how is no one in the media connecting the dots that the “youth rightward shift” is largely connected to Gen Z being the offspring of the conservative Gen X and Millennials being the offspring of the (relatively) liberal Boomers?
“The Dems lost young men” - um, those men just aged up and still vote Dem… Yea, young people voting Republican is obviously bad but I feel like people are misdiagnosing the problem here

mmm i don’t know if i agree with this - myself and most other epic leftists i know were raised by fox news dads. though i think this might be more of a geographic divide than anything. anecdotally, most friends i have from the coasts still have pretty liberal parents even at their most “conservative.” midwest hits a bit different save for the odd union auto worker.

i called my mum yesterday and could hear the disappointment in her voice that she had to pause Rachel (Maddow; mononymous in my parents’ household) to pick up the phone, so I let her go, free to yell “lock him up!!” at the TV into the wee hours of the night

FFFFFFFFF my local Daiso base price went up from $1.75usd to $2.25. Got a 200 yen plant pot that used to be $3.25 but now it’s $4.50. We’re so cooked.

Oh and my dad got really mad at me and my brother in mid-2023 because he couldn’t believe we didn’t find Dark Brandon funny or cool. He thought because we didn’t like Brandon that meant we had become Trump voters

Still to this day I have no idea what Dark Brandon means or what it was or where it came from. People started saying it for like a week then stopped. Getting mad at someone for someone not thinking it’s funny is scary.
