Distance between

Let 1 = the game design distance between Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 2 (USA).

Personally might calibrate the scale differently—Mario to Mario 2USA feels like a 2 or something. You can go left and pick enemies up! Hmm.

I think the distance between Mario and Mario 2 is greater than the distance between Mario and Sonic. Sonic feels like a natural progression of what is laid-out in Super Mario Bros.

How far you reckon it is?

Still working through what a full point of distance looks like but Metal Gear Solid V might qualify

  • free vs. semi-fixed adjustable camera (1 point)
  • outpost infiltration/extraction vs. point A-B traversal (1 point)
  • base management + how that affects your treatment of enemies in MGSV vs. the absence of those things in MGS1 (1.5 points)
  • vehicles and companions vs. their absence (1 point)
  • all that multiplayer FOB stuff I didn’t even do (1 point)

and so on

I think your measurements are sound. Undertale is pushing the upper end of both the range and my capacity to estimate the distance. Triangulation or some form of game design parallax angle might be needed to get higher confidence.

I’d say it’s about 7 or 8 points away. The actual gameplay is pretty different while keeping fourth wall breaks that ask the player to get existential, choosing to kill or dispatch enemies, meta commentary, characters that gained widespread memetic appeal. Developer jokes tucked in corners. Things of those nature.

If someone knows more I’d like to know if fans expectations of Deltarune map onto MGS2 desires in some sort of venn diagram.

But in gameplay terms we’re pretty far into the neighboring pitch. I don’t think I can itemize this no more than I could itemize a review. Turn based combat vs real time, dialogue trees vs codecs, I mean name any gameplay system they’re pretty fundamentally different between two games. Though both games use their systems to give the player an experience that will subvert gamer knowledge and do something unique.

This is fully the spirit of my question - trying to compare more dimensions than can be reasonably considered at once to elicit novel connections. I unfortunately can contribute nothing to this question though, lol.

Maybe like 0.1 for whatever mechanics/moves that moved from edge cases to requisite? Oh and for poison mushrooms. I think there’s some nonzero distance.

HYBRID HEAVEN , and WINBACK

If Mario to Mario 2 is 1 point of difference than from Tetris to Lumines it would have to be greater. Yes they are falling block puzzles but the shapes are different, what you clear is different, the playing field is different, the rhythm component, there are specials in some of the games, the obvious aesthetic differences etc etc. I’d put it more at like 3 or more. I’m good at Lumines and not good at tetris is another component.

Mario to Mario 2 on the other hand is a platformer with additional character variants, additional specials, and the new pickup and throw verbs. It doesn’t seem like a lot to me but maybe that is too reductive?
