Here’s another one: supporting Connie’s budding singer career with your godawful harmonica in Bumpy Trot a.k.a. Steambot Chronicles. There are several diegetic songs throughout the game but this is the main one you’ll hear in different occasions.
Similar to Pauline singing in Mario Odyssey, I think there should be a genre of song that is just Nintendo songs with extremely literal story beats as the lyrics, written in long-winded and vaguely metaphoric terms. Smash Bros Ultimate's theme song is another great example.
Fire Emblem has been doing this recently with Azura singing lyrics like Sing with me a song of birthrights and love (when you play as the good guys in Fates: Birthright) and <Sing with me a song of conquest and fate (when you play as bad guys in Conquest).
Spoilers for Three Houses
Summary
Edge of Dawn also describes the plot and setting of Three Houses very literally from the POV of Edelgard. Stuff like “behind this mask” is referring to her wearing an actual mask. “My blackened heart scorched by flames” refers to people doing experiments on her heart to give her the crest of flames, (a “fire emblem” if you will). “Making vows I know will be betrayed” she literally betrays her vows to the church and to those who slither in the dark.
finally, school has taught me something culturally relevant! (les mes)
((this is a joke, school has taught me a lot of culturally relevant things, like baz luhrmann’s romeo + juliet))
@KennyL I feel like opera in video games could warrant its own thread.
@Jaffe this constitutes spoilers imo
I just got mandela affected. I remember dancing around the family room as a 12 year old (and uh… 22 year old) lip syncing Real Emotion and could have sworn the other members of YRP joined her on stage to sing backup vocals.
Edit: Even 1000 words doesn't include other YRP members. Only Yunie and her Walmart brand clone (Lenne). I guess Yuna is a solo act.
@connrrr If I ever made a tumblr, it would just be about productions of Paggliachi in Gotham City. It's the only opera that comes to town and the Joker ALWAYS crashes it!
Started playing Lunar: Silver Star Story today, and right at the beginning one of the characters is introduced with a sweet little song. I have to imagine she sings in later parts of the game too, but I haven't seen any more yet.
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure has some really wonderful numbers. I wish more games were this theatrical.
