SNES all the way if you’re burnt out on DS. Though if you played IV on DS I recommend giving the NES version a try first. IV and V for their respective original consoles pair so nicely. I love witnessing the leap from 8bit to 16bit that happened between FFIII, FFIV, and DQIV and DQV.
man it makes me a little sad it seems like were not getting a DQ Builders 3. 2 was so so fun
Which SNES translation are you playing? Last night I tried the one that positions itself as being more of a literal straight forward translation. It seemed good but I did notice a couple typos. Then there’s another one that says it “localizes” the game more.
kind of side note but it makes me a little bummed that people playing old final fantasys for the first time via the pixel remasters aren’t going to really catch on to ff4 and why it was such a huge, massive leap, especially for people in the usa who went straight from ff1 to that… the remasters compress and flatten the timeline in a way this loses something. anyway this is a dragon quest thread, as you were
it seemed so all-encompassing though.1/2 are so replayable… They could always revive the series 10 years from now or something like they did with monsters. those type of building games are immensely popular. anyways I’m right there with you. Maybe for switch 2. would like to see one with G👀D graphics and high framerate.
Oh Lord here we go. One could scroll up to see my rants from before. But here we go again.
Dragon Quest IV, Dragon Quest V and DQ VI are slept on in a major way that the “DQ Community” at large isn’t really seeing. All that seems to matter are the DS versions. The original english version of DWIV is awesome. DQV’s newest english translation patch is from the year 2002, dude. Even worse is DQVI, which has no complete patch for original hardware. I’ve gone into Dragon Quest discords and was treated like trash for pointing this out. At least DQV runs on hardware in english, with a couple glitches. But there are times where the translation falls short. It’s still great, but clearly no one has cared to update it since 2002, which is a shame.
If you want to play it, go with the version from 2002. BTW just a side note so I don’t sound overly pretentious-- I played DQV in english on an emulator on a macbook in 2013. It’s great on emulators too if that’s your thing. MiSter would be even better.
My point is that english speakers barely seem to care at all. Not in the way that Final Fantasy or Pokemon hasve countless patches, retranslations of all sorts (multiples, using different tones and voices, which is wild), and DQ still has a pitiful amount by comparison. This is a crime!
@phylaxis yeah. that was true before, with wonderswan, PS1, GBA, iOS etc remakes. it’s good that the pixel remasters provide accessibility that makes it apparent. I’ve accepted that normies will just never understand. While the progression from 8bit to 16bit get my rocks off, it is all the same difference to normal people.
and yes I can now confirm that both the english patch and original japanese Super Famicom version of DQV only show the title screen during the New Game opening sequences, and perhaps at the end IDK I haven’t beat it yet. This is a strange choice cinematically after the first four games all showed an epic grand title screen with the overture theme. Makes me wanna start a new game and watch the cutscene and hear the baby cry every time I boot up just to hear it.
Appreciate the guidance, I’ll try the 2002 patch(last night I played the intro using the 2001 “literal” patch). And yeah I’m playing it on my little emulation handheld which I just finished the first Suikoden on and am obsessed with. Great way to play an old game.
I actually did play through the Ragnar episode of DQIV NES after finishing the DS version and found it very charming! You can also scroll up to find my thoughts on the DS DQIV localization but TLDR: I didn’t like it and find their foreign accent obsession to be very weak and harmful to the characters. And I believe all the DS and after games in the series do this though I didn’t find it anywhere near as harmful in DQXI.
Currently playing DQIV DS and while I totally agree with this I also have to say that it’s nice to see my accent somewhat represented in a game rather than having the usual mix of “American”, “posh English” and “literal Dickens street urchin.”
I kind of don’t care about the accents as much as everyone else seems to. Though I think it bothers me most in DQIV DS, but that’s because the DS version bothers me in a lot of ways. I’d prefer to even play it on PS1, fan translated.
Honestly I’d say give the PS2 version a go. If you’ve played one DS/mobile game you know what that engine is like. The PS2 one is unique and in full 3D.
May 27th is the anniversary of Dragon Quest and I’m hoping they release some new info about XII.
Well, shit, now I’m hoping that too…
It’s finally back!
I don’t care about the “it’s a remake of the entire trilogy” conspiracy theory (it does state “The Quest begins” which referes to DQ3 being the first episode chronologically) but the mention of Windows Store next to Steam does make me think of a day one game pass release
That’s a hell of a good sign indeed. I like that theory, and will be very happy to try it on Game Pass if it does.
But I hate RPGs on Game Pass. The Persona games on Game Pass stay for six months or a year on there. But I need more time than that to play through a long RPG!
I’m guessing chances are it’s not a conspiracy at this point. Midori, the online leaker says it’s the trilogy. I don’t pay much mind to rumor mill stuff usually but I do pay attention when things are posted from her, she has been the gospel for Atlus/Sega information for a while. Will find out if she’s just as reliable when it comes to other companies.
I’m definitely going to dip into the DS and PS2 versions of V someday after I beat the original. Especially the ps2 version, we’ll see how much it aligns with my imagination while playing on snes
After the hd-2d remake trilogy, they should make FFVII-remake style remakes of 4 5 and 6 but it’s just running on DQ12 engine
I have been daydreaming about that thing being I-III all at once since it was announced and they alluded to revisiting all three. I try not to pay much mind to leakers and rumors and such, but maaaaaaaaaaaaan that would cool
