Driving and racing games are fun!

This mod rules! I’ve been playing with it installed since last week and it’s so much more stable on my system than FXT ever was. It hasn’t crashed once yet.

I was just looking to install it. Since I already have FXT, I’m guessing I should probably do a fresh install?

Not sure! Fwiw I didn’t bother with a fresh install and as far as I can tell it’s been fine. I’m pretty sure they can coexist, as FXT is a separate executable and Tweaks replaces the original.

Excellent! I’ll give it a go!

I played like 50 hours of Gran Turismo 2 last month, then thought it’d be neat to get a racing wheel to wind my way through GT4.

I must’ve took a wrong turn at some point, because I tripped and fell down the rabbit hole of rally sim racing. Now my desk has pedals under it and a shifter clamped to the edge, and the only thing YouTube thinks I want to watch are highlights from Rally Finland the other week.

May this be a cautionary tale!

lol wow omg, pretty much the exact same thing happened to me a few months ago.

I was playing GT4 on my PS2 and wanted to maybe look into getting it set up at the computer desk with the wheel kit I used to play Outrun 2. I ended up downloading the first Dirt Rally and yeah… the wheel and pedals lived at the desk for a loooong time and I turned playing that game into a career and yeah I started watching Rally highlights as the season started up toward the beginning of the year.

Is this a thing that happens??

I’m not even all that really into cars… I’m tangentially into cars. I like to look at the cool ones and can perform basic maintenance on my own car, but I’m not a car enthusiast by any stretch.

I do really enjoy mountain biking however and rally is kinda the car version of mountain biking imo.

Coming from someone who has no idea how to do a single dang thing to my vehicle and whose exposure to car parts has been the Gran Turismo 2 explainers: This might turn me into a car enthusiast! All of a sudden I want to learn driving stick-shift for real and maybe drop by a car show in my city sometime.

But I think rallying is especially seductive to folks who are outsiders to car culture: street-legal cars, public streets, the insane tango on the edge dividing control from a crash. It’s a potent cocktail. I was really enjoy Dirt Rally 2.0 and now I’m juggling that with the newer EA Sports WRC game from last year, since it was (maybe still is!) on Steam at just $15 last week. I love the road sense in these games!

This latest obsession has me strong — I’m thinking about catching the Le Mans race in Austin, Texas, at the end of the month. Could be pretty sick, but I’ve never been to a race and have no idea what to expect.… And in the course of writing this I just found out about a rallysprint about an hour away in October. Feeling like damn I gotta be there.

having been to the WEC race in São Paulo last month, do it!!! it’s loads of fun, the cars are amazing, and the long race means you should hopefully be able to walk around the track and take in different viewpoints

!!!

Just spent my Saturday night figuring out PS2 emulation (it wasn’t hard) and playing TXR 3. Good timing!

They did the thing! The countdown timer still had a bunch of time left on it!

Those highway screenshots look pretty tasty. Never played a TXR before. I might give emulation a try on the weekend!

Turns out taking a look at Nightrunners Prologue the other day was quite topical.

This is so my shit. I love me some of those Saturn/Playstation era arcade racers, they’re the best. Emulating that vibe is fantastic. I’ve seen this one before, but have forgot to wishlist it.

Wow that’s a cool compilation.

I actually live a stone’s throw from the Laguna Seca raceway… About a mile and a half directly southeast of the corkscrew, as the crow flies. You can hear the cars from my house during events.

It’s always fun taking a lap around the track in different racing games and seeing how they render the hills of the area I live in. Sort of a, “hey, I can see my house from here” but in video game form.

Little known fact, when it rains they have to call it Laguna Mojado.
