Emulation on Consoles

I remember the dingoo!! That thing had a unique(??) ps1-style survival horror game on it, the first of that sort of revival that I can remember.

I guess it was a Symbian game?

@Personasama#9670 Thanks for sharing that video. I have been toying with putting together an arcade cabinet and have been struggling with what to buy behind it for the back end. Fascinating video about console HW/SW architecture and modern X-Box development.

PS2 was good for emulation. Some went all out with the icons.

I just love holding the Vita

I feel this on a deep, spiritual level.

P.S. anyone who's using a vita to emulate stuff, please pirate oh deer for PlayStation Mobile.

@exodus#9802 This is such an aesthetic

I like that it‘s PS1-esque except at a much lower resolution/frame rate/poly count, but still retaining the same lighting, texture quality, and sound fidelity. It’s a weird midpoint that captures the feel of early PS1 but makes it even more retro? It reminds me of the Resident Evil 1 port for DS:

Hmm, can't seem to find a video of the game running on actual hardware, for obvious reasons.

@Personasama#10200 God I love this version of the game for all its trying to do and all its weird additions. One day I will play the multiplayer mode with people.

@robinhoodie#10205 That's an editted video!

Apparently the actual game didn't show other players on screen at all. [In co-op](https://residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/Co-op_(DS_minigame)), they showed up as a star on the map but would share a single health bar, and in versus, the only thing that affects each other are killing zombies - different colored zombies do different effects to other players:

Has there been an RE-style tank-control, item management survival horror indie game that's multiplayer? Seems like it could be interesting.

Aww Dang! Yeah I was really excited by the idea of local Survival Horror multiplayer. I guess Biohazard Outbreak is up and running again on private servers, so you could in theory get 4 PS2s in the same room running a co-op campaign. Obscure the Aftermath had a 2player co-op campaign but it is definitely not the tank control item management kind of experience.

@Personasama#10210 There‘s a guy making this series of co-op games called Outbreak on steam that’s like very heavily Resident Evil Outbreak inspired. Reviews are very all over the place but they seem pretty interesting, are cheap, and have splitscreen and online options. I was pretty interested but couldn't get my friends on board.

I‘m considering finally upgrading my Chromecast for streaming and couch emulation possibilities. Was wondering if anyone here uses a Nvidia Shield Pro or Xbox Series S as an emulation device? I’m genuinely pretty split on which to go for.

From everything I'm reading, the Shield Pro looks like a pretty solid machine for $200 and can play everything up to and including Saturn/Gamecube/Dreamcast. PS2 and beyond will likely never run on it, which is a shame but there's always Moonlight and Steam link and GEForce Now (which I forget exists) to play anything more hardcore.

Xbox Series S on the other hand seems a little more future-proof. It looks like there are some promising developments with Wii & PS3 emulation. The big drawbacks being, Xbox using retroarch instead of individual emulators, and there's no Steam Link or desktop streaming apps that I'm aware of. At $300, I can maybe justify the extra price for the storage space and an extra controller. I don't have much affinity toward any Xbox games except for Fable and Elder Scrolls, so I probably wouldn't be using the device for Xbox games until 2023 or beyond. For that matter, does anyone know how annoying is it to switch between Developer Mode & Retail mode? And anyone know if I can use the Criterion and HBO Max Xbox apps while in dev mode?

Yeah the component shortage is a major reason I‘m looking for emulation box. My PC’s graphics card is showing its age and I‘m waiting for the market to stabilize before even looking at a new one. Plus, as cool as the Steam Deck will be, I want to wait and see exactly how it performs and feels to use before buying something that expensive and which won’t ship for another year or longer.

@Tradegood I’ve been toying with this and one way to look at it is do you want to buy a Switch for emulation (the shield) or an inexpensive gaming PC (the Series|S). Not casting shade, it’s just so much more powerful.

@Tradegood If you decide you‘re into the Shield Pro idea and wouldn’t mind one from like 2017, I keep meaning to get rid of the one I've got, you can have it for A Cheap Price

@exodus Thanks for the offer! But I think I'm going to just save up for an Xbox Series S instead. I think it will give me an excuse to check out some of the xbox back catalog (thanks to this thread for recommendations) and could be a fun project to learn retroarch over the holidays.

Let us know how you like it. And post Retroarch comments/questions in this thread or the other emulation thread. I've been using it a lot the last few years and want to be able to pay my learning forward because it is not easy to learn how to drive well

I hand soldered a SCART-JAMMA adapter in order to connect an OG Xbox to a Konami Windy Candy cab. The majority of games that I played were via MAME! This was probably the only great good experience I’ve had with MAME. I’d play Sky Kid and Aliens vs Predator pretty often.

I bought that particular xbox premodded and preloaded with roms, and it never got connected to a TV or even a regular gamepad.

I picked up a Series S yesterday and started tinkering around, it's cool to have my first Xbox! But is it just me, or is UI is a little overwhelming with the marketing and a ton of boxes with little things going on. They really lean hard into their sports game/shooter audience. The back compatibility catalog looks pretty nice at least.

Duckstation and Retroarch run like a charm, it was super easy to setup. It's also incredibly nice to set it up with a network drive, and be able to work remotely on it instead of fiddling around with system File Explorer. Having a nice large SSD is quite nice, especially with some of these big PS2 games. Arcades Games has a great tutorial playlist for setting stuff up. Lots of little features in there too (like retro game Achivements!).

My PSX, PS2, PSP, Gamecube and Wii are all playing very nicely. Was able to solve some minor gamecube/ps2 graphical issues and input delay in the settings menus. There are a good number of options and features for all of the cores. I also loaded some Genesis games but for some odd reason those were all distorted and had a horrible buzzing nice, so I'll try to debug that one again later, and well as see what Saturn/Dreamcast looks like.

This forum inspired me to check out Cleopatra's Fortune and **GOD HAND**, I look forward to giving those games a go.
