apologies to everyone for my FOUL MOOD

List feels odd at first glance, but hey, looking forward to hearing the rationale behind it all.

thank you for getting the sticky/unsticky shane, you a real one

very amusing how non-seriously everybody was taking this list.

i think Videoball is the only thing i voted for that made it lmao. was fun to hear Tim talk about it quite a bit after all these years.

@espercontrol#12900 The show has turned up for me under Apple Podcasts on 26 October 2020, meaning it was a very long way down my list (I have a backlog across multiple podcasts to slowly work through). If I hadn't joined the forums recently and seen this post, I would not have known that this episode was out!

Not sure what has caused that or if you can do anything to fix it, but thought I'd best let you know just in case.

are you a patreon backer, or no? I am, and it showed up at the top, in chronological order, for me.

@crumble#12934 Unfortunately no, I‘m not on the Patreon yet. I’m subscribed to the podcast via the regular, public feed that turned up when searching for it within the Apple Podcasts app

@rejj#12932 shoot!! thank you for letting me know, I just updated the RSS feed with a fix. hopefully Apple will crawl that sooner rather than later.

(for the technical explanation: because this was a nonstandard episode, I pulled up an old episode's XML formatting. as you can tell, I went with episode 156, since that was also a ranked list one. i forgot to change the date value!! amateur hour stuff, sorry.)

also I'm just now getting around to listening to friends at the table myself. i'm enjoying it!

@espercontrol#12936 looks like it has already updated for me!

Hope it didn’t seem like I was nagging, and thanks for sorting that out so fast. Glad it was an easy fix!

Is there really better driving on video games than on Outrun 2?? I don‘t believe that tho if anyone wants to prove me wrong I’m willing to try shit out.

@fugazi57#12938 My unpopular opinion is that GRID (2019) is on par with OutRun 2! It nails the sweet spot between pure arcade treachery and sim-style responsiveness, and it is as gorgeous as OutRun 2, though with a different style. It's real good. I wish more people played GRID (2019).

OutRun 2 is what I voted for though, lol.

One of the main takeaways I got from this episode is uh…you sure got a lot of new listeners in the past year lol, I can't remember most of my picks but barely any of them came up, one of them was defs Capcom Vs SNK 2 tho so that was a win.

I haven't played Hollow Knight myself yet but I will say as an anecdotal observation I have noticed that it's DUDE THIS IS THE BEST GAME phase passed pretty quickly and every now and then someone on my timeline will pop up saying "I just tried Hollow Knight it sucks why do people like it".

I've said it before on this forum but I'll say it again Let It Die is hateful trash and the only reason more people don't say that is because it's very good at pretending it's not hateful trash for the few five hours.

Also I meant to say this before the new year but the annual episode thread is as good a place as any; 2020 was the best year possible for this show to come back and I'm so happy that it has. I can't bear most podcasts and having something pleasant to listen to that drops consistently helps bring a little bit of structure back to the work at home interchangeable haze lockdown life has been the past 10 or so months. Having Tim dropping box set worthy game reviews every couple of months is a nice bonus too. So thanks to everyone who works on the show!

@rejj#12937 no not at all!! i appreciate it greatly and sincerely. i wish i could go back and fix more mistakes in edits or such, but ones that impact visibility or playability of the show are pretty urgent!!

@Lesmocon#12941 I instinctively went to retweet this post. I would if I could.

While the veto-rule made for a fun game, I was kind of curious to know the top 5 listener voted games in each category to get a sense of what people think different genres are. I wonder if you would consider making the poll results public?

For example for strategy games I was very surprised that final fantasy tactics advance and Valkyria Chronicles were the top 2 as I don’t even consider them strategy games, but rather tactical RPGS. With strategy games I usually think of either RTS games like Command and Conquer, Starcraft etc. or turn-based strategy games in the vein of Heroes of Might and Magic (admittedly I see how this straddles the line with respect to tactics RPGs), Civilization etc.

On the question of Chrono Trigger vs DQV I played both of those games for the first time within the last 2 years and I have to say I enjoyed Chrono Trigger more. I think I have a major preference for shorter games though, so that might be part of the reason, but with Chrono Trigger I felt like it was paced well and ended before I started to get bored of it. With DQV on the other hand, I got bored off the random battles towards the end, even though I liked the overall story and themes. As someone who does not have any nostalgia for Chrono Trigger it’s a real good game, even if it’s the stereotypical answer to the “best rpg” question. Mind you it is also not my personal favorite RPG, but definitely up there.

Also, I did vote for Crusader Kings II for the simulation category, so I was happy to hear Tim suggesting that game. This is despite me claiming in another thread that I don’t really think Paradox games are worth their complexity, but it was still the game that came to mind when I saw that category.

As it keeps coming up in the podcast I also decided to start playing that zettai setsumei toshi 2 (I will still try to finish Suikoden!) and man, I’ve never really cared much about frame-rates and such, but the dips are really noticeable in this game. Still it seems fun so far, I like the setup a lot. Hearing Frank talk about the English version and looking it up, that’s a pretty wild localization though. They even changed the hair and skin color of the characters in addition to the names and transplanting the plot to America. I wonder who made that decision? It seems like a strange thing to do for a game that is so decidedly Japanese.

@SU2MM#12949 I agree! Release the Poll Results! I too was very surprised by some of the choices made by listeners.

appreciate the “theater of cruelty” method of list-creation nice work jaffe.

This episode made me think it would be cool were you guys to do more just best of a specific genre episodes. If memory serves, there were some of those way back, but feels like there hasn't been one for a while
