    I submit that the Dexy's Midnight Runners of video games is Ed Logg of Atari. He contributed to a few popular games like Centipede and Asteroids, but his big hit game he designed by himself is Gauntlet, which was the #1 game of 1986 (#2 in Japan). It was ported to every console and home computer in the following years and though Ed Logg made a sequel, none of his other efforts ever quite reached similar heights.

    In the 1990s, Kevin Rowland (singer of Dexy's) reformed the band with none of the original members, put out two more albums and still makes appearances today. Atari also resurrected Gauntlet without Ed Logg in the 90s to moderate success, but newer audiences probably wondered what the big deal was. Today, if people namedrop Gauntlet, they're almost certainly referring to the original and still well-loved arcade game.

    ("Come on Eileen" is a really weird chart success. How many other #1 singles can you name that begin with a fiddle? It's got all these key and tempo changes and what does "too loo ry ay" mean, anyways?)

    A couple good double feature in my opinion would be

  • - Inside/Little Nightmares as good recent horror themed platformers
  • - Clock Tower/Splatterhouse for basically the same thing but retro
  • - Portal/Stanley Parable for interesting narrator Source engine fun
  • Question 5 is good. I stand firmly in Tim's answer that most good things have probably already happened in video games, and if something new comes along that is significant, you will know.

    I pass up 99% of all new games, even when someone I know made them.

    Sometimes, waiting is good. Then when I pick up a modern release for the first time in years, even if it's not the best graphics on the market, it's still the best I‘be ever seen. I'm happy to skip annoying Bethesda/rockstar/whatever releases so that when I play Dark Souls, Death Stranding, FF7R they are the best graphics on earth in my gamer brain.

    For some reason I've always loved the reticle in T2: Judgement Day.

    Also, how funny to name the players Terminator 1 & 2.

    For me, the obvious pairing for A Short Hike is Minit. It’s the other good parts of Zelda stuffed into a fun size wrapper.

    Sunset the art game about a house cleaner whose commercial/critical failure made storied (ha) developers Tale of Tales say they would no longer be persuing commercial videogame projects.

    Followed by The Beginner's Guide. An art game about interpreting an artists intentions. In which there is a house cleaning loop, and (dont spoil this for yourself if you haven't played it) ||a developer says they no longer want a fan to play or share their games.||

    A double feature designed to bum you out and make you think.

    @JoJoestar#15604 Those would be a good combo since their comedy is as adjacent as their visual style, but I love The Beginner's Guide so much than the Stanly Parable.

    Haha yeah Deep Blue Sea

    Is it cool to ask what Jason Rohrer did? I'm out of the loop. Did it have to do with his game where players give birth to each other?

    @connrrr#15634 This is it, I think.

    https://twitter.com/jasonrohrer/status/1352685074219753472

    @connrrr#15634 he had some gross political takes on twitter. i think he's always hinted at his views from an “enlightened” perspective, but he lifted the curtain to a covid truther rant. it started off dumb and went on to “people are going to die, just let us out”. last i checked he was on his twitter soapbox campaigning to complete the wall and have trump completely pardoned from impeachment proceedings.

    edit- i guess i hadn't refreshed. yeh, that's the tweet above ^

    @JoJoestar#15635 @seasons#15639 oh wow man.

    the funny thing is, biden could do all that and the same exact 74 million people will still hate his ass

    what a chump

    @Moon#15630 i love that house cleaning (well; tidying) level with all my heart. i've gone back and played just that level probably more than a dozen times. there is an incredible pleasure in just helping someone with small tasks in a cozy setting.

    also all I could think about while discussing Dexys is Lloyd from the comic Phonogram, a character obsessed with the band. phonogram (the singles club, at least; phonogram vol. 1 doesn’t really hold up) is excellent, everybody should read it.

    Just wanting to impulsively post while listening to this podcast during work to say that Socket / Time Dominator 1st does indeed rule. Especially that red hot soundtrack.

    @JoJoestar#15635 Does Rohrer run with the “rationalist” Twittersphere - LessWrong, SlateStarCodex, etc.? These kind of bizarre “enlightened centrist” takes from another galaxy seem to be common with them.

    >

    @Moon#15630 Tale of Tales say they would no longer be perusing commercial videogame projects.

    Some might say they never did!

    @espercontrol#15645

    I've got a hot hot take about how that game can be read as a trans narrative about coda, but ironically it's a little too self-revealing to share here.

    the reason to spend time buying capsule toys in shenmue isn’t to get an amy rose or the alligator guy, it's because ryo is dealing with heavy trauma and knows his childhood is draining away, and he’s too closed off to seek comfort among his friends, so he’s doing switched-off brain shit to make the days pass.
