    I like the show

This was a fun time! Gene was great and would love to see him back again.

Surreal to hear your name read for the dirtbag segment, and even more surreal to have it answered by a washington post journalist! Only on insert credit folks.

Great episode! Gene seems like a great podcast guest. Such an enthusiastic person.

His recommendation is, I think, a great one also. It's actually something I've been thinking about a lot this week. If you live in Texas, you know the legislature has been up to some STUFF as they love to do once every other year. I don't live in Texas as of the beginning of this year but still follow the news there and, IF you live in Texas and want to know what's going on, I highly suggest subscribing to...

    1) the Houston Chronicle as it's a great big city newspaper that doesn't get the clout of your coastal papers. Many are gone now but some of my favorite beat reporters were there in the past three years. Off the top of my head, Keri Blakinger was a great one, but she's at the Marshall Project now.

    2) The Texas Tribune, which is a non-profit news organization that also has incredibly great reporters. Chris Hooks is probably my go to, and he's also a great Twitter follow, but there's quite a few great ones.

Texas is a big place with so many things happening all the time and I'm very thankful I found great writers to help me understand what was going on so I didn't get overwhelmed and just check out.

If anyone has media recommendations from the places they live/have lived, I would love to hear them. Local news is really important and good!

was surprised to hear Gene mention he‘s new to games writing since he’s quite good at it, but then realized that I guess it was only in the past year I'd come across his writing.

I wanna commend Brandon’s commitment to bringing up Earth Defense Force in every episode.

Best Murder has gotta be this

Yeah it seems like Ebay is on its way out, sadly. Covid destroyed the Japanese import market on eBay, combined with new policies that acre over small businesses like mine that I’ve run on eBay since 2009… and the USPS is wrecked. Dark times.

Oh hey, one interesting note about Demon Slayer - it was even #1 in the US for a bit at the start of May. Was that because lots of theaters were still shutdown all over, maybe! But it does let them say they opened to #1 in box offices at home and abroad.

Jaffe‘s pure joy at that Nights pun is just wonderful. Also, Brandon’s commitment to Asuka 120% finally convinced me to put it on my Retropie this weekend (the PlayStation Burning Fest Final version) & I had a pretty good time doing some versus with it.

the PS asukas aren‘t so good but it’s still better than nothing. I think final is better than maxima anyway!

Re best murders in videogames and following up on @yeso#32109's message, which offers already great examples:

Umineko is my favourite game of all time and esentially 160 hours of murder mystery with beautifully executed locked room kills. There is one in which the murderer hides the bodies in the middle of a Halloween party, using candy and decorations to hide the fact that the bodies were blown up from the inside, so they pass as... very literally piñatas.

The Silver Case has extremely cool murders, in which the cops encounter and interview the ghosts of the recently killed victims.

Ghost Trick may not have the _best_ but it has the funniest and most colorful ones, the murder machine one was pretty great.

On that note, dying to this mf because nobody explained how the controls work in Clock Tower is a highlight as well.

    @exodus

Are the 2.4 GHz Genesis/Saturn style controllers that much better than the Bluetooth? I‘ve had a bt for months now, and I love it. I’m sure the wireless connection is quicker with the 2.4

I watched some of the podcast on TV. It's a nice option if you have a firestick or a chrome cast. I especially like that the timestamps on the episode post are the same for the video.

My favorite tiny example of the rising tide of facism in America is the evolution of [the Milwaukee Bucks logo](https://www.nba.com/bucks/history/logo#:~:text=Logo%20History,following%20the%2025th%20Anniversary%20season.) (Their current motto is "Fear The Deer"). But the way payment processors have been trying to squeeze anything sexually "deviant" out of the marketplaces of polite society is a second. This was first brought to my attention a decade ago when a little known self-published sci-fi author had their works blacklisted from Amazon because of "bestiality". The bestiality in question was in a story about a sex shop that grows and sells living, bioengineered dildos (it was a rather tame story that happened to have living, non-sentient dildos in it). Things have only gotten worse sense then and the demands for censorship have become bolder. This push is at the behest of credit card companies and other payment processors, and its insane to me that we're letting letting these financial interests dictate what is allowable speech.

The way some powerful forces out there (such as advertisers) are trying to push for this Disneyfication of our entire society makes me sick. The way its often pushed as "protecting children" disgusts me, an ancient canard. It feels infantilizing. Like for the sake of children (its not actually about protecting kids, it never is) they want to push us all into a permanently delayed adolescence, where everything has to be child-proofed for our own good and you'll never have to worry about reading something unsafe or "adult". (And guess what, anything with LGBT themes is automatically considered "adult")

The whole thing really pisses me of and I find it very concerning. Hearing the apple and epic lawyers calling "adult (and often queer) games" "unspeakable" was an eye opener. I wish the epic laywer had pushed back on that instead of accepting that framing. I have a feeling it's going to get much worse before it gets better.
