Re: #6 about callbacks… I'm glad that Metal Gear Solid was brought up because the one that I immediately thought of was Snake (née Plissken) pointing to his handband in MGS2 and telling Raiden “infinite ammo”.

youtube version is up! i made a helpful visual accompaniment to question 8

Brandon: “How do you engineer electricity?”

    Kelsey: “Very carefully.”

I burst out laughing in the middle of the bus. <3

MY favorite callback joke is boring Frank and the guest whenever Brandon and I talk about NieR

That brief Metallica/Rock Band discussion reminded me of this:

    https://youtu.be/78KWIRpjKwU

@“hellomrkearns”#p35067 lol this is exactly what I'd expect. You can tell the drummer is trying to do the real part and having to bend his brain to play what the screen says instead of what he knows.

Nioh‘s a game that went through a ton of iterations that never went public—it’s very loosely based on an old unfinished Kurosawa script that the president of Koei had some weird fascination with, and so he simply would not let it die and would make different teams restart the project whenever it looked like it wasn‘t going anywhere. It was allegedly an RPG, a musou-style game, a dungeon crawler, etc and even once it was given to Team Ninja, it was drastically reworked a couple times to make it less Ninja Gaiden-y. That game was announced for PS3 in 2004, well before the PS3 was even out, and didn’t hit the market until 2017, and I can't think of any other games that were stagnant for so long that ended up being anything more than an interesting footnote.

HAL's Kirby game for Wii is also interesting inasmuch as it was the first HAL-developed console Kirby game in over a decade (Air Ride aside)—the previous one came out for N64, with multiple scrapped games in between, and they've talked in vague terms about the incredible hardships they faced with every cancelled project without ever actually explaining how they managed to somehow forget how to make Kirby games (especially given that they were cranking them out on handhelds). I guess losing Sakurai and Iwata hurt them more than one might have presumed it would.

Great episode! Kelsey was perfect–I think @“Jaffe”#205 and/or @“exodus”#3 need to appear on the VGHH now. Seriously, though, I bet Brandon could provide a really great deep dive into the history of the Korean gaming scene. The episode from a few weeks ago featuring Felipe Pepe touched on some of the international scenes I wish I knew more about.

What is the best callback joke in video games?

I feel like there are a hundred great ones that I just can't quite remember, but one that got a chuckle out of me was the UMD boogie board from Astro's Playroom. That game was pretty much all callbacks, with varying degrees of effectiveness, but this one was cute and I've brought it up before in another thread. There's a boss toward the very end that's another amusing PlayStation callback, but I would rather not spoil it!

    Improv Zone – Museum Tour

This was _transcendent_. Everyone was oddly perfectly cast (big props to Jaffe), but I think I have to give the EGOT to Frank for his uncanny portrayal of an insufferable museum-goer...almost seems like he was born for the role.

@“kory”#p35096 “family computer” in the weeb accent had me howling. every dude i knew when i was 17 was exactly like this (including me to an extent)

@“esper”#p35101 there's a little insufferable Frank inside all of us

@“kory”#p35096 Yeah, I would extremely enjoy @“exodus”#3 and perhaps someone who worked/works in the Korean game industry discussing the changes that have happened over the last three decades for at least an hour (or in my ideal world a dozen hours). We got a little bit of Korea discussion in the last insert credit episode, but I want more! I guess I’m in particular interested since Korean games probably made up a bigger part of my childhood than Japanese games, but I always got the sensation that I was only getting the tip of the iceberg. Every article I read about these companies makes me want to learn a whole bunch more.

The delight exuding from @“Jaffe”#205 when everyone realized what the lightning round was going to be was very great and made me smile on a very early morning flight.

@“gsk”#p35080 Oh yes, Nioh is a good example! I'd love to hear more about how that all went down, though admittedly when it did come out I played it for like an hour. just not my kind of thing!

@"saddleblasters"#300 yeah, I think it'd need to be like... me interviewing two industry guests or something, because I have a lot of knowledge of the gaps between the specifics but am missing some of the bigger notes out there. There's definitely a lot going on in the korean game industry that most folks have not tried to unearth in english (or particularly in korean that I'm aware of)

@“esper”#p35046 Dirtbag Anonymous asks: What is the best callback joke in video games? (31:13)

This isn't even formally a callback, but my favorite is definitely when Detective Gumshoe asks you why you keep showing him your attorney's badge. It happens in, I think, the second it third Ace Attorney game and is such a dumb acknowledgment of the dumb stuff people do when they're stuck in adventure games. It doesn't feel condescending at all (which is something that a ton of adventure games I've played seem to relish in doing) but just a nice little "hey, quit it."

Best version of the Mute City song is from the Fzero X Guitar Arrange album, where the composer and a few other musicians did covers of most of the music.

And then there's the Jazz version, which was part of an official album of smooth jazz covers, released around the SNES version.

The reason why GX/AX didn't get a sequel? Nintendo didn't produce a cover album of the game's soundtrack.

very excited by the show's “new direction”

Any chance of Kelsey just being a regular panelist on the show? She was a fantastic fit.
