Ep. 200 - Insert Credit vs. The Dirtbag

I mentioned this to brandon but I thought I‘d mention it here since I think it’s kind of amusing. The pope question I feel like was a missed opportunity. As I understand it any item the pope touches can become a holy relic (same with saints and other people of note in the religion). There are also churches built around holy relics. So if you gave the pope the steel battalion controller in the future there could be a Church of Steel Battalion.

lots to think about from this episode

Best episode I‘ve heard yet! (I haven’t heard every episode though, so perhaps the best one is one I‘ve missed)

It made me wanna get in that dirt bag, but I probably can’t… (not money, just being to young for my own good)

if i remember correctly antstream was mentioned
it's neat, as it's free, but also pretty stupid, as most computers and phones are powerful enough to just run the games without the need for streaming, which just makes the lag and missed frames so much more annoying.

The “what's the best game to play for exactly one hour” question was me, and both of the panel's interpretations were more or less correct.

At the time I submitted it, I was super busy between medical stuff, working from home and entertaining a two year old in lockdown. The only time I was finding to play games on my own was every second night when it was my wife's turn to do bathtime/bedtime. This process happens to take almost exactly one hour, and so I was trying hard at the time to squeeze as much valuable game time as possible into that slot.

So many games start with a lengthy introduction/tutorial section where you can't achieve anything in the first hour, and by the second hour, for me two nights later, the momentum and education of the introductory section are lost. On the other side of the coin, arcade and score-attack games are often difficult to keep up for an hour.

Funnily enough, two of the games I did settle on were Pac-Man CE and Yakuza. A full-length race in F1, Forza or Gran Turismo (split over two sittings where necessary) worked well too. Good times were also had with one-hour online sessions of Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. I've kept Yakuza up - I now play about an hour of whatever Yakuza I'm up to when I'm not on bedtime duty.

PS. I was outraged to discover through this episode that there are a lot of Billys (Billies?) submitting questions on the patreon that *aren't me*. Ridiculous.

Ah, that‘s a very specific reason, and we didn’t think about tutorials getting in the way!! heck. Frank's old “random rom” idea might work well here. Just load something weird up in MAME every time and let it rip.

Yeah lots of billeez out there

@exodus Random ROMs are a late-night treat for me once everyone’s in bed. Perfect for when I’m too tired for an ‘important’ experience and I don’t have to work within the strict one-hour slot.

Wow, I’m only 35 minutes in but this is a great listen & is also peak Frank.

How’d ya’ll not go right to this for “video game character most likely to call the cops?”

  1. Loving this episode.

  2. Damn, I did not know Amano was a nationalist. I googled it and the first thing that came up was a twitter thread from friend of the show Kazuma Hashimoto explaining the situation. (bring that guy back around sometime plz thx)

happy my sonic model 2 question got answered, I sit around thinking about that hypothetical game all the time.

@exodus I love f1: drive to survive! I keep recommending it to people but no one’s listening to me, which sucks for them.

@tokucowboy but narc are the cops!!! they’re not gonna call themselves!

@devilsblush yeah seasons 1 and 3 (not so much 2) are great because each episode is structured like a mini anime arc. It’s hot stuff.

and I’m happy that my dumb double neck guitar question was answered with sonic R with a trackball and a pedal for the model 2

So glad to hear three of my favorite panelists return! (referring, of course, to Tim, Jerry, and Tim’s soundboard…) My experience listening to this was reminiscent of what @LeFish said…a perfect accompaniment for a lone walk around the neighborhood, save for publicly L-ing my A O more than once.

Was Assassin’s Creed Unity the “eye floater” of video games?

Who can say?

But seriously, the question made me think of the visor reflections in Metroid Prime

edit: Oh, and also the Mother 2/3 battle backgrounds!

@exodus The next season of Drive to Survive is shaping up to be a worldie too. There’s a tonne of material to work with already and there’s still 9? races to go.

If any Drivers To Survivors become fans of the sport, F1 is occasionally discussed over in the Real Life Sports thread.

I dunno, sounds to me like I nailed it!

@dicegame here you go, I hate it…

finally, i can stop rendering and get back to editing!!

As someone who received two games with my Dreamcast for Christmas 1999, one of which was Capcom’s Power Stone, I am 110% satisfied with @exodus 's assessment and answering of my question.

How dare Frank suggest Ryo Hazuki would be likely to report you to the cops. From small crimes to large, his bag being stolen by a child, to a man breaking into his house and murdering his father with his bare hands, Ryo does not report anything to the cops. Ryo may be vapid, emotionless, and many other things –but he is not a narc. Ryo will refuse to call the cops if the player even tries in Shenmue I.

The “are we there yet?” energy Frank presented was palpable (and hilarious, I hope it wasn’t too awful). I understand, though. The idea of being told that many questions are in the pot would freak anyone out. I laughed so hard every time Frank was like “yup, let’s go,”

Secondly, starting this episode and hearing Tim on the panel felt amazing. I hope he’s doing well. He seems to have a lot happening, which sucks.

Lastly, this podcast keeps me afloat while I work a dead end job (while also applying for a job using my degree). I’ve been on the form for a bit now, but I haven’t been as active as I used to due to my job destroying me, but I just want to say thank you! This episode felt great and thanks (to Frank’s dismay) for the longer run time!
