I'd like to third the recommendation for A Critical Hit!, Kate is doing some great work.

    {“sticky”:true}

    john punk

going to force my family to play that lightening round game on Thanksgiving

If my home town was a sonic level it would be Beercheesebratwurst Zone.

Also I like how often Frank mentions Narc during the podcasts.

If my hometown was a sonic level it would be…. damn there's a lot of good ones:

    Death Yard Zone
    Chaotic Inferno Zone
    Lethal Highway

I literally joined the forums just to talk about how good “the improve zone” was on this episode of insert credit! BRILLIANT! id play Ape Escape “Esports”

thank you for your time, *bows*

    whose hometown is http://info.sonicretro.org/Genocide_City_Zone

it‘s not mine, as mine’d be one of the cold ones

I used to live across the river from Chemical Plant Zone:

@“Superpants89”#p43266 I should‘ve pronounced it “esports” in the same way as “escape,” that would’ve been funnier.

@"billy"#201 I think chemical plant zone is what I mean, not that oil one frank was talking about.

I lived between this one (richmond):

    and this one (rodeo):

A risk/reward mechanic I've always liked is how Limit Breaks work in Final Fantasy VIII, where you have a random chance of getting one every time your turn comes up and the odds of triggering it increase the lower your health is. You can get really comfortable with it and play almost the entire game with a party of half-dead heroes struggling to keep their eyes open long enough to use a Renzokuken before they bleed out

That lightning round game was the closest the podcast has ever come to capturing the energy of couch multiplayer N64-era good-time vibes. Everyone admits the game is terrible and should never be played again, yet continues playing just because they enjoy each other's company.

    > it’s not mine, as mine’d be one of the cold ones

    Oh it's [mine ](https://www.tbnewswatch.com/local-news/federal-government-declares-thunder-bay-a-racism-hotspot-3953020)for sure

Lee-san from Yakuza 0 is literally a masseur. Dude is “God Hands.”

Totally hypothetical hellish assignment as a composer that definitely doesn‘t break any NDAs and definitely didn’t happen to me: being asked to do a bunch of music for some software and games to be bundled with a well-known low-cost educational computing device, having your proposal and invoice accepted, starting the work, and then weeks later finding out the person who hired you didn‘t have the authority to accept your proposal. A counter-offer to your proposal is then sent where you’re asked to essentially work for free, but with all the same deadlines and workload.

    Imagine that!

Gonna stick my neck out just a little bit here and talk about Documental. I agree with Brandon‘s warning that it includes plenty of old fashioned bigotry, and I would not generally recommend it either. I do think it holds some real interest though for anyone interested in the theory of comedy across different cultures. Japanese comedy can often be impenetrable to people who, like myself, can’t speak the language worth a damn, but I‘ve come to understand it like this: imagine standup never existed, and all modern comedy was still rooted in the conventions and sensibilities of vaudeville. In this way I find the show pretty interesting even when it’s not so funny - a bit like that documentary The Aristocrats, for anyone who's seen that.

I do think there are genuinely funny moments of pure absurdity, people barely holding it together in the face of joyfully stupid jokes, and those are the high points that keep me watching. And on that note I have a recommendation: Joshimental, a special one-off episode made with only female contestants, many of whom are not comedians (but are otherwise in the entertainment industry). It's widely regarded as funnier than the regular series and I have to agree. @"exodus"#3, if you haven't seen this yet, I'm callin' you out - this is worth your time.

@“billy”#p43315 that‘s real bad! I assume you just didn’t do the job? what's depressing is I reckon somebody else did do the job.

@"goonbag"#577 yeah, this is more or less what I was getting at, I should've specifically called out vaudeville too. I hate vaudeville!! And the funniest moments really are when someone's trying not to laugh, but season 3 is really rough.

I haven't seen Joshimental (the name of which already sure does show where they're coming from), but I'll give it a shot.

@“exodus”#p43323 definitely did not do the job.

A few experiences like that were why I gave up on doing freelance audio stuff altogether and started a semi-related but much more grown-up and boring business. It's worked out well though! The other thing makes me actual money, and I get to enjoy games from the outside as a fan again.

@“goonbag”#p43321 imagine standup never existed, and all modern comedy was still rooted in the conventions and sensibilities of vaudeville.

I suspect Stand-up is a very American concept – possibly even more specifically a Jewish-American concept given its origins and the huge influence of Lenny Bruce (a Long Island jewish comedian) on this style of comedy.

For instance, I don’t know about other latin cultures but French stage comedy is still mostly similar to traditional _vaudeville_ and _manzai_. Seinfeld (the TV show), Broadband Internet and the import of a few French-Canadian comics have introduced the concept of stand-up comedy with a new generation of comedians who tried this format on stage and TV in recent years (some of them outright [stealing old bits](https://youtube.com/channel/UCqPFL_-UpkO5O-rqPMHw8FQ) from Carlin, Seinfeld, CK, Chappelle etc.) but it’s still an unusual and relatively “new” form of humor for French audiences.

I don’t know if the Jewish influence has any importance – maybe this style of comedy is inherited from European Jewish ghettos with less access to material stage and props? – but one would understand why this type of comedy did not have a strong foothold in Europe in the middle of the 20th Century...
