    Just want to point out there was some censorship of religious stuff in Castlevania, though not as much as I remembered now that I‘m looking at it. The Holy Water in Castlevania 1 was called the Firebomb or something like that in the US instruction manual, for instance. In the intro to Castlevania 4, Dracula is revived when lightning strikes his tombstone, which has a cross on it in the Japanese version that isn’t in the US version:

    I thought there was also a cross removed in the intro to Castlevania 3, but looking at it again it is still there - the Akumajo Densetsu cross just has a bunch of little light rays or something coming out of it. I guess it crosses the holiness threshold?

    You can still throw a cross in most of them too! Though I guess it's more of a + than a cross

    Are video games capable of evoking Britcom-style secondhand embarrassment?

    I think a good example of this is LA Noire. I always feel like a total jackass even though I feel like I'm selecting the right choice for an interrogation.

    The thing with this is though, as mentioned, the player would likely just blame misleading writing over anything else. But that's where some setup up front would do a lot of work for you. Gotta set up the character as being a Larry David or Alan Partridge-like asshole around the beginning somehow, so when a semi-vague option that sounds right happens, the player will begin to think each time, "Oh no, how is this idiot going to to handle this choice? What disaster will come from my decision?"

    Quantic Dream's games are, unintentionally, exactly this sometimes.

    Outside of that, make it a buddy NPC doing the embarrassing stuff for you. Someone maybe close to a Barry Wheeler-like from Alan Wake.

    Otherwise, just play Facade.

    I forget which of the Game Boy games this pertains to and whether it was a loc change or just Japan being Japan, but the final boss arena in one of them is packed with Stars of David.

    important Jax update: the devs did, in fact, add Jax‘s stomp fatality to the latest MK as a brutality via one of the more recent patches, and so I can confirm that (in the current timeline, at least) he’s the one changing size, as evidenced by the eight million horny modders who've repurposed the brutality to make their favs stomp and/or be stomped.

    @“gsk”#p45952 So fun fact, these aren’t Stars of David but kagomes… whose resemblance to the Star of David is one of the favorite talking points of the Japanese-Jewish common ancestry theory, which had a major influence on the Shin Megami Tensei series. Weird connections!

    Does anyone know for sure if Devilman was the definitive origin for a certain segment of Japanese pop culture’s fascination with Judeo-Christian occultism and mystical imagery beyond just the broad strokes of crosses and devils? It’s certainly the case that works like Megami Tensei and Evangelion (and all the post-Evangelion games that clearly took inspiration from it - FF7, Xenogears, Sin & Punishment, El Shaddai, etc.) wouldn’t have existed without Devilman.

    I always found _Halo_’s appropriation of Christian terms and imagery into its entirely secular mythology pretty amusing - like America’s answer to _Evangelion_, but even less spiritual. Unsurprisingly, Joseph Staten is the son of a preacher (and, I’m going to guess, not much of a believer himself).

    In terms of Western games with Christian iconography, surely we wouldn’t have _Doom_, _Legacy of Kain_, _The Darkness_, _Darksiders_, or anything involving demons, angels, Hell, or churches without Christian iconography?

    SMT‘s specifically Gnostic bent has always surprised me. There’s a metric ton of throwaway references to Nag Hammadi Library, Valentinianism, and Manichaeism that get fairly into the weeds and that isn‘t easily explained by the JJCA stuff that’s also there. On one hand it‘s window dressing, but it’s extremely specific and obscure window dressing and I‘m curious how it got picked up in the first place. My best guess is via Carl Jung whose work also gets brought up in SMT and who was obsessed with the Gnostics, but I’m not positive.

    @“MichaelDMcGrath”#p46090 I think Kazuma Kaneko (who’s specifically cited Devilman as an influence), Koji Okada, and various other Atlus devs of the Okada era just really enjoy researching world religions and occultism as a hobby and dictated that it should be a core part of the series’ identity. Various SMT games (I’m told) have pretty deep-cut references to Buddhism and Hinduism as well (Nocturne in particular seems to lean more into this flavor than the Judeo-Christian mystical trappings of the other games) - not to mention all the hundreds of demons with designs and in-game database entries carefully based on their actual lore from all across various world mythologies. The Jung stuff is more specific to Persona, which is more the domain of Katsura Hashino.

    Persona 1 and 2 also feature Jungian stuff but yeah they certainly leaned a lot more into it after Hashino took the series over in 3.

    @“2501”#p46080 Hmm, I'd be surprised, the “hidden christians” thing has been fascinating to japanese storytellers for ages, with the idea of them building hidden churches in caves, hiding golden crosses and treasures around, etc. I think the whole hidden christian thing feels occult there already (many hidden christian communities, in isolation, became cultish), so to me it feels like just a general part of the culture, like “the cowboy code,” or “buried pirate gold” or similar.
