Super excited for the support Ukraine Bundle.

When Brandon was first bringing up the Ukraine Bundle, before I knew that the Ukraine Bundle was a thing, I though he was going to name-check this other recent itch bundle of tabletop games supporting trans youth in Texas. I can imagine folks here may also be interested in supporting that:

    https://itch.io/b/1308/ttrpgs-for-trans-rights-in-texas

Oops, I forgot about that one in the moment!! wow, theirs is going for a long time.

@exodus curious about your comment about Yakuza Like a Dragon‘s RPG mechanics! Even though some of the systems were a little underbaked I still think they added a lot to the game and generally enjoyed em, so I’d love to know what it was that turned you off of them

I'm surprised no one said a life sim town for a video game location to live in.

    Stardew Valley seems pretty nice.

@“thumpus”#p61454 I'll try to be quick about it:

  • - random battles were already the least interesting part of the yakuza games, and now they take 5x as long.
  • - aside from the tower, where there are actual win conditions and environmental hazards and things, the battles are incredibly uninteresting and lack variety. the way they show that it could have been interesting makes the whole thing worse to me.
  • - because the battles are not interesting and take a long time, you wind up with auto battles. the auto battles sometimes make it take longer, but at least you can go get a beverage or look at your phone. auto battles put your team in a "hub" zone, which is their party base. but each attack pushes enemies further away, so now everybody's got to run back and forth to his hub instead of moving closer to the enemy, making everything take eeeeven looooonger
  • - the jobs system was annoying and didn't really add to the game. you could take some attacks from other jobs to use to build your character out but you have to grind so much to get the useful ones that it REALLY FEELS like a grind, which, because the battles are uninteresting and long, makes the whole thing worse.
  • - exp is variable. 200 xp from a boss or main line fight may level you up in one go where fighting three 2000 xp rando mobs in a row may not make a dent.
  • in brief, it felt tacked on, didn't add anything but grind and fluff, and made the whole game take 70 hours instead of 20. I'm getting annoyed again thinking about it!!!

Where is the “I have to stay alive and write this article before I die! Okay.” voice line from? Whatever it is, I need it IN MY VEINS!

@tim the FFXV character is Cindy in English, but Cidney in Japanese

(what were we thinking on that one?)

Tim's recommendation this week was a great reminder. Words matter! Excited for the Ukraine bundle Brandon. I want another essay though. Keep em coming, Isle o tims got me excited.

@“Nerak”#p61480 I‘ve had no time to write anything lately because of this bundle thing, but tim’s got one ready to go, apparently!

when someone said no fall damage I thought: hey anxiety-free airline travel, but then I thought about what would happen in an air disaster over the open ocean

@“yeso”#p61487 underneath your seat you'll find a life vest -

@“Syzygy”#p61476 what a treasure trove this is. oh my.

This is barely relevant but the anecdote about someone getting Yuji Naka to autograph a game he wasn't involved in making reminded me of the time I encountered Jim Rose and The Enigma at my regular pub and got them to sign either side of an air hockey puck I happened to have in my pocket. They did ask why an air hockey puck and I confidently replied “no reason whatsoever” which they seemed happy with. A bit “lol random” I guess but it was the 90s and I was a teenager.

Paying real money began and ended for me with Maple Story

  • - It was a novel concept back then
  • - it was just as predatory as today, if not more because it was less regulated and it was a totally new concept
  • - it was the pinnacle of pixel art, some of the best pixel artist of all time were on that game making unique korean-styled facial expressions and clothing
  • - the year was 2005/2006
  • - Most of us were still using CRT monitors for their PCs, which made the pixel art even better.
  • - yes I used nana's credit card to spend like probably $60 one time
  • I‘ve been meaning to ask this question for a while now, but considering the topic of this episode’s fifth question, I might as well ask it here and now: Which video games do all of the voice line soundbites on Tim's soundboard (like “Nice!” or “Good luck!” etc.) come from?

    (great episode as always btw!)

i want to move to el marrow from grim fandango.

i want to retire to myst island.

@“KingTubb”#p61462 I agree with the sentiment, but Pelican Town only has like 12 people. That's too small a town for me.

@“esper”#p61407 What is your greatest regret in video games? (41:10)

I had an upsetting and maybe profound one in Disco Elysium. This anecdote is without my interpretation of what I did, but oh well. I failed to fulfill a sidequest. I didn't try because it seemed numerically impossible. This was connected to a character that resonated with me maybe more than any other character. I just felt kinda sad and weird, and I eventually rolled the save back to try again and do that character justice. I suppose reverting to an earlier save isn't necessarily a game sin, but I've been trying to change my own tendency to paper over any mistakes in a game. This felt like an incredibly appropriate game to try to accept all the wrong choices and missteps I made. I think I made the right call, but there were still weird feelings all around.

@“esper”#p61407 What is your most treasured video game possession? (08:23)

This is a bizarre question when approached from the in-game item interpretation. I'm sure the majority of people listening and in this forum have spent hours smashing our fingers into a certain challenge for the party boy lampshade hat or similar. However, once you get it, who cares. This is such a Zelda staple; you need a sword to go into this forest, and playing the game before you get the sword totally sucks. Then you get the sword. That moment is always great, but you doing treasure it, nor should you. One particularly obtuse Zelda and challenge example is getting the Hylian shield in Skyward Sword. You had to fight 11 bosses in a row, three of which were the[ stupid avocado monster](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/zelda_gamepedia_en/images/4/47/SS_The_Imprisoned_Model_2.png/revision/latest?cb=20120124120556). Having that shield didn't significantly improve my experience with the game, but I still did it in the normal and hard mode playthroughs I did of that game. So it's a weird compulsion.

I personally feel like any appreciation or value I have for an in game item vanishes immediately when I turn the game off. Maybe delving too deep into this is a little close to NFT territory. Oh well, I know the real answer is the Dead Cells soundtrack CD in my car.

my head just exploded from the reveal of the episode's theme, because just this last sunday i found a book about that questionaire at a thrift store. i was interested in it, but not enough to buy it. i did however take a photo of the questionaire.
