Doubling down on making people consider supporting Adios because apparently Doc has been going through some rough times as of late and it sounds like a nice thing to do for another human being!

@“esper”#p76780 ad reviews of Yankee Candle might predict waves of Covid-19

I have not listened to this episode yet but I had a very interesting discussion recently with someone pretty high up in the tech industry "food chain" who was explaining that COVID19 has impacted so many industries (wine, perfume etc.) whose workers had entire careers related to taste and smell that pharmaceutical companies and labs are taking the matter seriously (as in $€riou$£¥) for the first time, eyeing extraordinary potential for economic growth thanks to a largely untapped market.

As a result, this person expected the sudden progress in scientific understanding of smell and the cognitive role of synapses and the nervous system would likely trickle down to VR and video games in the not so distant future, allowing for the kind of stuff that Kojima used ro dream about in the MGS2/MGS3 days, such as the ability to simulate the smell of a burning building, a room filling with toxic gas, the smell of iodine near the sea shore and all sorts of juvenile fart jokes.

ok so i am now realizing i read a few of doc burford's articles a few months ago thinking he was the same guy as docfuture and was really confused by many incongruities

@“wickedcestus”#p76839 IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE!?

I have a very good memory of what I buy so I never have double copies of anything….

...except Double Steal, I have the Japanese version which I bought on accident thinking it was the sequel. I have the US version, which is near identical.

@“marlfuchs2”#p76847 Double Steal, the sequel to Steal.

actually I had no idea they were near identical! I thought it was a sequel. is it just kind of a v1.5 or what?

good listening today - Doc was a great guest and Adios looks cool, I hadn't heard of it.

  • - Frank hit my guide usage nail straight on the head. No shame at all about consulting one, but that first consultation usually informs the rest of the playthrough. I don‘t often go the guides much anymore either, but because of gamefaqs/reddit, etc somebody’s usually asked my question and received the advice. I'll just toss out a “final fantasy 19 cactuar where” search or something like that.
  • - loved @exodus using the Baz Lurhmann question to both dunk on Aronofsky and rep the much better Korean movie Mother. Mikio Naruse's Mother is also much better.
  • I have a feeling my most purchased game has to be Secret of Mana…SNES cart, SNES repro cart (i dunno, don‘t ask lol), Secret of Mana collection, Wii VC, SNES Classic Edition. What’s kind of embarrassing is that despite all of this, the most of this game I've probably ever played was when I got maybe a half hour into it decades ago in Snes9X and stopped playing because it took a weirdly long time for the enemy damage numbers to pop up and I assumed the emulation was broken.

@“esper”#p76780 default running with a walk button or default walking with a run button?

Remember when analog sticks were supposed to fix this very issue and now, many generations later, the run/walk toggle has somehow become ubiquitous again? What I'm trying to say is that this is a solved issue or, more concisely, [_oof_](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NFwhd0zsHU).

    @“esper”#p76780 Baz Luhrmann

I watched a heck of a lot of Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge back in the day and I'll freely admit enjoying them at the time, but who knows how well they hold up. I think the only other feature I've seen is Australia and wooo doggy that one was a real slog to get through. This is a really imperfect analogy, but I feel like there's some Kojima comparison in there somewhere. Both would definitely fit the 'auteur' definition (with all the connotations that come along with that) and produce lavish, self-indulgent works infused with aspects of another medium entirely (film --> video games for Kojima, theater --> film for Luhrmann). Also the most recent Kojima work I've experienced has, similarly, featured quite a bit of wandering in the open wilderness...

@“esper”#p76780 The Video Game History Foundation

Yeah, come hang in the discord! I know who Frank's referring to here and I'm sure he'll appreciate the shoutout lol

I feel like maybe Aronofsky has enough money to stop making movies, and that's what I wish for him.

@“exodus”#p76849 Double Steal Second Clash takes place in Chicago, and also has a free roam mode, so it's pretty much a whole different game. The game is also like 700mb which is tiny for an Xbox game.

Damn it there’s movie talk in this one, I guess I gotta chime in…

I don’t hate Baz Luhrmann! I sort of abstractly get why a lot of people do, but I don’t. There are a lot of stylistic maximalists I hate and Baz Luhrmann is not one of them. His goal is to present ultra-classical narratives in a tone of screaming, breathless post-MTV kitsch that matches their subjects, and he does exactly what he sets out to do and I find it perfectly enjoyable for what it is. His stuff, however loud and empty it may be, is way, way too heart-on-sleeve sincere and playful for me to hate. There’s always some wild CG transition or audacious soundtrack cue or gonzo performance just around the corner in his films, and they never leave me bored for one second which is more than I can say for a lot of “good” movies. I enjoyed _Elvis_ and imo it’s totally worth seeing just for the duality of Austin Butler’s mesmerizingly good performance next to Tom Hanks’s hilariously bad one. If there’s anyone in video games producing Luhrmann’s level of raging kitsch with his level of technical competence and enthusiasm… I don’t even know who that’d be. Whoever’s in charge of Sonic Team these days? Tetsuya Nomura??

I also want to call out the pod for _totally_ plagiarizing my post in the games general thread just the other day about _BioShock Infinite_ being the Darren Aronofsky’s _Mother!_ of video games. I also made the Guillermo del Toro comparison mentally while playing it, so clearly I need to don the tinfoil hat to keep you guys from stealing my private thoughts. (GdT comparisons aren’t quite compliments from me these days, though - last week I watched _Crimson Peak_ and that one really hammered home everything I dislike about his post-_Pan’s Labyrinth_ output.)

Honestly though, Ken Levine is totally the Christopher Nolan of video games. Same teen boy pseudointellectual energy, same caustic indifference to human subjects and images of violence, same vague reactionary slant, same obsession with spectacle and gimmickry over actual form and depth. I haven’t played _System Shock 2_ so idk if it’s actually good, but at least Aronofsky has made some watchable films in addition to some absolutely insufferable ones. (_The Wrestler_, which has the benefit of being written by someone else, is even downright _good_.)

I mean I just don’t see how anyone can truly resent an Australian man who, given near-limitless creative freedom and upper eight-figure studio budgets, has dedicated the bulk of his career to convincing kids that Bill Shakespeare, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Elvis Presley are totally hip, yo

Listening to the movie talk and thinking wow, @exodus, are you me? Black Swan was one of the few times I‘ve left a cinema physically angry at what the filmmaker just subjected me to. Do yourself a favour and NEVER watch Mother! - against my better judgement I gave it a go after a friend assured me it was worth watching. That friend was wrong and they’re lucky I still talk to them.

I'm just here to say that The Beatles were unequivocally NOT mods. As a man who spent a large number of years in his teens obsessing over “Mod Culture”, I was disgusted to hear Brandon imply so.
