**Questions this week:**

  • 1. Why did Embracer Group acquire Square Enix Montreal, change its name to Onoma, and then immediately shut it down? (05:25)
  • 2. What kind of video game items do you never want to use again? (08:09)
  • 3. When you’re playing an RPG and you complete an enemy encounter, should the overworld or dungeon theme start over from the beginning, pick up where it left off, or just play through the encounter itself? (15:15)
  • 4. NASCAR racer Ross Chastain pulled off a risky wall-riding maneuver this week setting a lap record, claiming that he learned the move from playing NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube. How is it that video games are changing the way sports are played in real life? (21:04)
  • 5. Is this particular dartboard a video game console? (30:02)
  • 6. Violence Island (39:17)
  • **LIGHTNING ROUND:** From Yeso: Guess the game based on its Metacritic review (01:06:38)

    Recommendations and Outro (01:13:31)

    [“Ep. 260 - Banjo Kazoomer”,“Ep. 260 - Banjo-Kazoomer”]

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger vs. Crash (and Sonic, and Spyro) was settled years ago:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzsC1qSqFDo

I should also point out that, by some quirk of fate, one of the Ty HD remasters held the highest user rating on Steam (and later on, the highest "hidden gem" rating on steam250) for... well, I forget exactly how long, but definitely approaching a year, if not longer.

I don't have much affection for the games but the studio that made them has a long legacy in Aus game dev and managed to weather the global financial crisis, being chewed up by THQ, etc so I'm happy their silly platformers have such a large and silent audience to help keep them afloat.

    [upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/wnYDoCD.png]

This is a good cheese snack with crackers.

i thought of a good game that starts off where a group of bikers steals the hero's supply of 99 elixers and wrecks havoc. "Why'd you have so many elixers stashed in your attic?!"

I also think I could write an episode of South Park about Nascar that's part using the wall like a videogame and everyone suddenly gets way better at nascar and part pseudo sequel to Ricky Bobby. I don't think this forum would like it tho so I'll keep it to myself for now! Just know that yes, a videogame steering wheel would be installed in the car to replace the real steering wheel.

Here’s some clarification on the first question: Square Enix Montréal was the studio that was renamed and shutdown, not Eidos-Montréal. SE Montreal developed both Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO. Apparently some of the team merged with Eidos which is developing a new IP, a new Deus Ex game, and assisting in the development of Fable 4.

Haven't gotten to this one yet, but there is an objectively right answer. I cite the fact that the PC and modern console ports (which are based on the PC codebase) of the PS1-era _Final Fantasy_ games do it wrong. It was IDed as a bug in 1999 and was never fixed and they haven't bothered fixing it for 20 years.

    “make your brain right”

Haven't listened to the episode yet but…

@“esper”#p91616 NASCAR racer Ross Chastain pulled off a risky wall-riding maneuver this week setting a lap record, claiming that he learned the move from playing NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube.

Good lord I thought I was hearing things last night when I overheard my dad on the phone mention something about videogames while he was talking about NASCAR

This episode has established that Mr. Resetti's power is filibustering.

Tim: You'd be surprised by how many zoomers know Banjo-Kazooie for some unfathomable reason. Why do they know it?

    Kazoomer here.
Since I have three older siblings, the N64 was already in the house by the time I was born (1999). So I played games like *Banjo* and *Mario 64* a lot as a youngling in the mid-2000s. That's just my experience though; maybe not a super common one.

(Side note: Jaffe's story about describing *Banjo-Kazooie* to his extended family reminds me of when I did the exact same thing, albeit completely unprompted and in, like, 2007.)

I'd imagine the characters' inclusion in *Smash Bros.* has helped introduce *B-K* to a younger crowd as well.

I've also seen a number of people suggest that *Banjo-Kazooie* is only popular because of YouTubers, namely JonTron. This is probably the real answer, unfortunately.

@“gsk”#p91625 If only we'd known about this trailer at the time!!!

    @"JCP"#p91643 oops!!!

@"LuigiIsThePope"#p91701 Older sibling hand-me-down is the anecdotal reason I heard in a lot of stores for young folks buying N64 stuff, so that tracks for me!

@“esper”#p91616 How is it that video games are changing the way sports are played in real life? (21:04)

Made me think of UFC fighter Max Holloway (former featherweight champion and probably in the top 3 of all time at that weight class) saying he learned a lot of his best moves from playing video games.

Max / the article never says specifically _what_ he learned and implemented from the games, but he does mention having observation time of his opponents in a simulated setting, which reminds me of what Tim said about F1 drivers.

There sure are a lot of 3D mascot/character platformers with Australian animals.

Edit: can't believe how good y'all did on the [lightening](https://www.mobygames.com/game/lightening-force-quest-for-the-darkstar) round

    Kao‘s pronouced “K-O”, btw—yknow, because he’s a boxer

We need a 3D platformer featuring a wombat and a platypus.

@“穴”#p91737 The Banjo-Kazooie of gen alpha

Oh shit, how about this, instead of a wombat and a platypus, it could be, like, a chameleon... and uh... whatever the other one was in _Yooker-Laylee,_ or whatever it may have been called.

Oh right, Yookie or Layla from _Yugi-Leilo_ was a >!bat,!< right?

@“Syzygy”#p91696 The fact that I didn’t know about Bookmans until today despite living here in Arizona is only funnier considering there’s a Half Price Books that I live less than a mile away from and have frequented since childhood. Gonna have to take a trip down to Bookmans now.
