I've yet to finish the episode but the “people asking me if they can ask a question” bit reminded me of when around a dozen buddies of mine rented a rural cottage for a week and played videogames the whole time. This was around the time that Rock Band was at its peak popularity and I remember one night going to bed and being shaken awake up by someone drunkenly asking me if everyone downstairs were singing too loudly and keeping me awake. Thanks buddy!

The Rieko Kodama section was really touching! Definitely going to go and play more of her games. I've got a rom of the ps2 Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star ready and waiting.

I agree with Gita, I'd definitely pay 100 dollars, or even 100 blokemate bucks (pounds as we call them in the UK) for a game if it meant the money was going to the right place. I don't have much money these days but if I see an indie game I'm interested in on steam, I always make a point to buy it on release or when I can afford it. I feel like I stole Vampire Survivors buying it for 4 pounds, it has more content than most AAA games.

I totally only knew Reiko Kodama as being a critical part of the team for Phantasy Star and Skies of Arcadia. I did not realize she was also instrumental in PS IV and had her fingers in so many other pies. It was so wonderful to hear Cerny‘s recollection of her as a person, not just as a developer. It’s good to remember that game devs are people, too, and that their relationships with others and the world at large are also important. It sounds like she was just a lovely person in addition to breaking a lot of ground in terms of representation in games. So many developers go unheralded because they are not outspoken and outwardly colorful people. We could use a lot more folks like Kodama in the industry, probably. Because I don't know how many people like her are already in the industry.

I just want to congratulate @espercontrol for getting this gargantuan recording down to a neat 94 minutes. Way to go

and carving some kind of coherent throughline out of my whole interminable word-barf, at that, hahahaha

it was so hard to speak to this topic, which considering how much i've thought about it for so long, probably indicates a few things on what emotional state it put me in for a while.

because when she actually has something to say, when does azure ever shut up?

Commenting to reinforce the “just email an expert” advice Gita gave. My wife is a publicly-established expert in the epidemiological study of a particular form of cancer and she is always pleased to hear from any interested journalists. Even just folks who have lost/are losing loved ones to the disease, she's happy to take time and answer questions.

HOWEVER, it's probably good to signal that you're not like a creep or a conspiracy theorist. The only time she hesitates to respond is when she thinks someone is trying to pull that junk on her. It's a waste of her time and, in the end, of the creep's time too because she's too good at answering questions to get what they want out of her.

@“𝔞𝔷𝔲𝔯𝔢𝔩𝔬𝔯𝔢 𝔨𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔦𝔤𝔞𝔫”#p93822 on this note, I have a 25-ish minute complete version of what you submitted going online soon. maybe patreon exclusive at first, but i'd like very much for people to be able to hear everything you said because I thought it was really beautiful.

    ty esper

    luv u girlie hee hee

Frank's Dark Shadow guess was kind of reasonable, considering Shadow of the Ninja was published as Blue Shadow in Europe.

Beautiful episode, thank you @espercontrol @azure @exodus @Jaffe, and all the contributors who don't hang out here.

My recommendation is something that briefly came up near the end, and that is Harper Jay's novelization of Skies of Arcadia, _[To The Horizon](https://archiveofourown.org/works/26912239/chapters/65672878)_. It rules. You don't have to be a super fan of the game to enjoy it, they do a great job of adapting the story and themes into a new form. It's so fun, funny, inspiring. It makes me feel ready for adventure.

    Fantastic episode.

@espercontrol I don’t know how much editing was involved in it, but I laughed at the “no!”, “zero dollars”, and “two hundred dollars” initial reaction answers coming out almost on top of each other but timed as they were.

little wife and tiny husband is a good pregnant elsa dies at dentist

nearly fell out of my gosh darn car at “Barbies in the garbies”

@“rejj”#p93850 i did just barely space them out for listenability, they were each said completely simultaneously.

@"kory"#p93854 after recording Jaffe told me that’s gotta be the episode title, but with the rieko tributes I wanted something that bridged the gap.

Really enjoyed this episode! The last one with Gita on was one of my favourites as I trawled through the archives, so it was wonderful for them to be back a whole Musk-buyout later.

However, as an English (for now), I have to defend _Pullblox_ over _Pushmo_. Do you know what you do in that game? Pull on blocks. It makes the sequel titles more cohesive too : _Fallblox_ for the gravity-filled sequel, _Fullblox_ for the free-to-start one that brings all kinds of mechanics together and _Pullblox World_ on the Wii U - well, I'm not defending that one.

Regrettably, I wasn't aware of Rieko Kodama until her memorial on the new Mini Genesis, but I've come to appreciate everything she did since then. Happens all too often that I only find out about great artists after their passing, but I felt that the almost half-hour of eulogising was a beautiful tribute. Thank you to everyone who was a part of it, I''m going to come back to that segment a few times, I expect. It'd be wonderful for Harper Jay or Azurelore to come back on the show as guests again, but their contributions to that segment really stood out to me; when I heard the news about Kodama, my first thought was to check **transgamerthink**.

With my Steam Deck emulation non-existent but possible, I'm conflicted on if I should play through Skies of Arcadia sooner rather than later when I get it on there or if I should just read Harper's novelisation now. Definitely an RPG I've been wanting to experience someday and doubly so in light of this.

Gita's story about playing Final Fantasy X for the first time is the “audience reaction to The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat” of videogames

Thank you all for the Rieko Kodama tribute. Made me cry all over again, but it was incredibly touching to hear how much love people have for her games.

I would appreciate it if you were able to rate and review this show on iTunes. We recently lost all of our reviews to an RSS glitch. It really helps us out! (And I read every one.)
