haven’t listened to the episode, but it looks like the Jewel of the Five Suns Kickstarter has been canceled :o

I don‘t know why I’m spoiling this but the game Tim mentions in the discussion about relationships is >!Lufia II, and I‘d say he’s being over-complementary, to put it mildly.!<

    @“gsk”#p97566

Thanks, I was going to make a post asking because it vaguely sounded familiar. I also agree with your assessment.

The Young Pope is so good. I always want to recommend it but it goes hard and weird in ways that are difficult to really explain without just forcing you to watch the first three episodes. So hard and so weird does it go right out the gate that you are completely blindsided by the ways the show transforms and hits you in surprisingly emotional ways.

The New Pope, sadly, sucks real bad. It would have been an amazing movie sequel, but as a standalone series it relies so much on the audience wanting exactly one thing that it refuses to give for way longer than is reasonable.

I looked it up and A Man Called Hawk is available on Tubi if you want to watch it Brandon. I didn’t know about this show before today’s episode and definitely want more Avery Brooks so I’ll give it a shot.

Tim talks about games not feeling like an archetype anymore and I don't know if this would be a good question but what are some underutilized/unexplored game archetypes?

The two the come to my mind are Xanadu Next and Gargoyle's Quest.

Xanadu Next is an action RPG that is fully controlled with the mouse and the controls/combat is really tight and fun to play while also being entirely one handed. I loved that game and I'm really disappointed that there just aren't really other games like it.

Gargoyle's Quest has a really cool platforming mechanic with wall clinging and wing strength that creates a lot of cool vertical level design that evolves with the players evolving wing strength. I think there is a lot of untapped potential with handling this limited hovering as a primary mode of transportation and the design that comes out of it. By Demon's Crest they ditch the idea and just give him infinite hovering.

I just feel like there's still so much more these kinds of games can give.

I haven‘t played Dragon Quest Treausres, but Tim’s description of the monster-related game play reminded me of the Star Base battles in the newest Pokemon games. Like classic gyms, Star Bases have a dominant type. There's a gym leader like battle at the end, but you must “draw out” the boss by defeating henchmen. Rather than traditional turn-based battles, you instead choose 3 pokemon and use them in real-time to auto-battle the enemy mons around the arena. Results of these is determined by type, of course, but also interestingly move set. If I choose a mon with neutral defensive typing against the base type, but it has a move that is strong against that type, it will win these auto battles without taking damage.

This is, unfortunately, the most interesting thing about these sections. It's cool in that it's new for pokemon, but it feels a bit underbaked. I want to check out _Treausres_ and see a maybe a more honed idea.

Loved the episode. Thanks for the section, yeso, it was real fun to see them mindguessing the prizes, too.

As for the episode, it‘s curious, but I agree with what Brandon said during the episode about people not knowing to talk about why they liked what they liked. This is something that also happens with art. I feel that in the sense of the academia we are cursed, but luckily I think that what came during the DVD/BluRay era is coming up even if it’s a little thanks to podcasts and YouTube channels. Twitter also made some people post up videos about artists or creators talking about why they made what they made, but I feel like we need something further. In any case, I think that the other big issue (I don‘t know if this is related to videogames, so) we need also to encourage questioning/probing/trolling/confusing people in order to question people for what they think, because creatively speaking (I think you said the same) sometimes our minds are the biggest prison to conceive what’s feasible instead of trying to be out of our minds (I remember Inio Asano having like a computer application in order to help him be inspired about scenarios he didn‘t even think about in the first place, and I think we could try to do that more with people, to try to make them be more curious and less in their minds). Sorry, too much text, but, I hope I was able to express myself, since honestly it’s not my forte at all!

@“whatsarobot”#p97563 Ah heck! Looks like in addition to dude‘s normal awkwardness, something bad happened over there. Hopefully they’re doing alright! Now I feel weird about having directed everyone there.

@xhekros yeah that makes sense - I think the first step to understanding one's unique taste is positioning it alongside the opinions of others - like how friend of the show Mathew Kumar and I watch all the same movies, more or less, because we're interested in the same genres, but we basically like opposite movies from each other within those genres. As we talk about it we both learn a lot about our own taste (and get mad at each other lol). It's handy in terms of nailing down what's unique to yourself, and how you can turn that into creative output.

Hello, I'm here to also say The Young Pope with Jude Law, and also The New Pope starring John Malkovich, rules and should absolutely be watched. I wish I could talk to someone about these shows. I should rewatch them at some point…

I‘ve heard people say they like the young pope, and friends tell me to watch it, but I just can’t imagine being interested in something with that name, let alone the new pope - it‘s just a huge blocker for me. It’d be like asking me to watch the young robert e lee or something. I can‘t imagine a scenario in which I want to watch something with that as the subject! there’s so much other stuff that's not about popes that I need to watch still.

@“exodus”#p97600 So, you know the youth? What if one youth was a pope

    @“Jaffe”#p97603 that sounds bad!

    @“JJSignal”#p97597

Ah, I loved the Young Pope but really disliked the New Pope!

Felt it was structurally just a mess and probably the middle handful of episodes could've been a fifteen minute sequence in a 2 hour movie.

@“edward”#p97607 The New Pope is a bit of a step down in a handful of ways I think, but that John Malkovich really made it still enjoyable for me hahaha. Also the opening credits music ruled.

EDIT: I think the way it worked for me was, I still had an itch I wanted to scratch after that first one, and that season was just enough to taper it down to being, "This is all I want now, and nothing more after."

    @“JJSignal”#p97610

I can definitely see that. And, yeah, helps that John Malkovich is just captivating in such a different way than Lenny.

And, man, that credit song is so infectious!

    https://youtu.be/sgwYToaSQ90

    @“edward”#p97612

Ah, it never gets old. So good!! I often would look forward to seeing that illuminated cross and that song. Such a good choice for that show.

    >

@“exodus”#p97600 It’d be like asking me to watch the young robert e lee or something.

That's a bad comparison though. It's not actually a show that's about "Let's go through the life of the pope before he became The Pope" or "Muppet Babies, but what if The Pope?" but literally the line that Tim mentions. What if they got someone they didn't know, and as time goes on they slowly find out what kind of person he is.

But I could understand it perhaps not being appealing if there's not any interest in religious context or imagery in general, but it is a missed opportunity for seeing a show with immaculate set and costume design, and an appreciation for the silence in between scenes. I'd urge you to at least give it a shot despite its name, and Tim's comparison of it being Jojo-like is somewhat close in some ways in how it _is_ The (fictional) Pope's Rather Peculiar Journey.

@“JJSignal”#p97615 Okay, I‘ll try! It’s just a big high wall to climb because I‘m actively disinterested in the religious context, and there’s stuff out there that I‘m actually interested in. I guess robert e lee wasn’t a good example because that‘s a specific person - I should’ve said “the young confederate” or something. Like if someone makes a show called “young republicans club” and says but it‘s actually good and subversive, that doesn’t change that I'd have to watch a bunch of young republicans on tv. I can see those in real life! if that makes sense!
