@“esper”#p102972 A SMALL SELECTION OF THINGS REFERENCED:

    > […]

    > Shining Force II

    > […]

    Yo holy shit.

havent listened to the episode yet, but looks like there's a typo for #2

Didn’t knkw the panel were such big Hollow Knight fans. Rightfully or not I’ve tuned out pretty much everything about 2D indie metroidvanias for the last… I wanna say decade?

I will play _Elden Ring_ when it comes to Switch 2… I’m holding fast on that…

I haven't finished the episode yet, but Brandon is right about Hollow Knight. There are a few pillars that hold that game up, but a couple of em are cracked and falling apart.

    @“2501”#p103002

I would like hollow knight 200% more if it had a dash and fast screen transitions

Edit: I know it has a _dash_ but I mean a god dang run fast button you know
I'm too spoiled by Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion (the best metroid game)

Man this really makes me want to play Linda³. Tim needs to make a video on it to inspire people to either translate it or to turn it into an HBO series.

Fun list! Especially for lovers of Yakuza, Earthbound, DQV and Elden Ring (me)

Listening around now: I’ve heard so many people with taste I respect recommend Yakuza games SO exhaustively, and yet to this day there’s something about the series that just never makes me want to pop one of the games in and try it. Maybe something about the aesthetic?? The goofiness of it? The setting? The fact that I haven’t actually been to Tokyo? The fact that the games leverage the largest sex trafficking organization in Japan into a bunch of adorable memes? I really can’t explain it. Someday I’m sure I will try a Yakuza (I even bought Zero after the last time IC showered it with praise… and then never opened it) but every time I contemplate it for even a second my brain decides I’d rather play something else instead.

Really interesting to hear about Warren Spector’s “one-block RPG” premise though. That sounds like a dream multiple different people had in the late 90s: obviously there’s the _Majora’s Mask_ comparison, but also I think the original premise from _Chrono Cross_ was that it would have just one village where every single NPC (even the dog) was a recruitable party member, and you can still see traces of that in the finished game in the ways its relatively small-scale geographical setting feels interconnected by a complex web of NPC relationships and histories. It’s such a cool idea.

Also I have yet to play _RDR2_ but I think I’ve soured on the Rockstar formula in general. Those games all feel extraordinarily empty to me no matter how much surface detail is put into them, and as both action games and (increasingly) sim/RPGs they pretty uniformly plateau into unbalanced samey experiences with a succession of different wallpapers after about half a dozen hours each.

Damn, Brandon’s Switch sounds fucked up - I’ve never had that kind of input problem with mine, and I play games regularly with my friend who’s a fighting game freak (so I would definitely trust him to notice laggy inputs). I do share the experience of gradually realizing it’s not a platform for action games though (or at least action games originally developed for higher-spec hardware). I’m sure when that Switch 2 comes out, though… the one that they’ll definitely announce this year… yeah…

LOLing and nodding my head at Tim describing how the big mind-blow in finally playing _Tokimeki Memorial_ was realizing how influential it was on other milestone games - that’s always such a cool feeling. A couple times in just the last month I saw some less-remembered films from the 1930s and 40s with very specific elements that I realized as soon as I saw them had directly influenced Paul Schrader and Martin Scorsese in _Taxi Driver_ (and at the end of last year I saw _Pickpocket_ for the first time and discovered the genesis of Schrader’s entire career) so those were really fun “Eureka” moments that I then ofc had to tell all my friends and family about. (One of those secret influences, btw, is a Chuck Jones Looney Tune about a sociopathic dog who tries to assassinate FDR’s terrier!)

I think my take on _New Vegas_ is that the one thing holding it back from greatness is being built on the skeleton of _Fallout 3_ lol. But then I played the Xbox version and not whatever the latest wizardry is that modders may have done with it… still though, wouldn’t mind a remaster/remake of that one?

Re: Earthbound - I think someone needs to whip up the sizzling spicy take that Mother 1 is a better game than its sequel, and I say that based on having impulse-played the first 5 minutes of each on my Switch last night. I mean look, the combat in Mother 1 is pretty dismal, but if someone fixed that I truly think (based on the chunk of it I’ve played) the writing and atmosphere would hold their own. The intro is way more affecting (really the first ~100 seconds after starting a new file are all-time material) and even the graphics tap into the strange, eerie abstraction of 8-bit graphics to more interesting ends than the more complex but also tongue-in-cheek pastiche of Earthbound. (I just can’t get over the feeling that Earthbound is constantly looking away from the screen and snickering at itself, which is cleverer and more “postmodern” but also just less appealing to me over the course of a game that’s multiple dozens of hours long.) I sort of get people falling in love with EB’s aesthetic but never understood the stories about it moving people to tears, changing their lives, etc.

Would people be open to or firmly against _Mother_ trilogy remakes/remasters? Precisely how involved would Itoi need to be to make this kosher?

Anyway kudos to @exodus for insistently loving both _SMT4_ and tactical RPGs, _and_ having the bravery to say that yes, _RE4_ just is a legit game no matter how grumpy Tim is about it! I’d still rather play it than _Gears of War_… sorry, Tim…

    >

@“2501”#p103014 a bunch of adorable memes

fwiw this is more of an issue with the latter games. Most of the series is pitched to like a crime serial tone, with character being ciphers, depressives, and sadists. Zero has “cuteness” and “positivity” on the margins, and it’s 7 that I thought went a bit too far in terms of winking self-regard

    @“2501”#p103023

Mother has better music but that‘s about it man! The thing with Earthbound is that it does have that cheeky attitude, but it’s not a condescending thing. When you play this game you are ostensibly supposed to be a 10 year old child before the Web 2.0 in real life. You basically are an idiot or should at least be able to put yourself in the same mentality of one. From that perspective Earthbound is a game that gently opens the door to the world of adulthood and includes you in it, which actually is pretty life changing if you were, before that point, a child who was relentlessly gaslighted and groomed by adults who see children as objects or vessels for their own obsession, or the kind of child who was relentlessly beaten by older kids for getting caught reading and had to sneak out of your house to some other place or play it in the dark of night.

For god's sake, Earthbound is a game _that forces a 10 year old child to beat up an entire police department before earning the freedom to exist as an independent entity and leave their home town._ There is a dark humor in the game that admits to the player that the world they actually live in isn't perfect, but at least in this game someone is looking out for you, even if he's sort of a funny Japanese uncle who listens to jazz music.

Okay Linda ^3 looks fascinating, like some kind of Satoshi Kon video game. Will definitely keep an eye out for that if it’s ever translated. Sucks that the developers ended up being sort of a dedicated bargain bin title studio after the PSX!

@"IncompatibleKaiser"#p103028 All I can really tell you anecdotally is that I first played _EB_ as a bullied grade schooler but I got bored with it somewhere around Fourside and ended up playing _Chrono Trigger_ instead, which remains one of my favorites to this day

@“yeso”#p103026 I think also I tend to be kind of picky about crime serials where I demand hyperrealism, either David Simon sociological scope or David Chase bleak irony with truckloads of moral gravitas either way, and neither of these very particular styles seems to be as popular in crime fiction outside the West and especially the US where “gritty realism” isn’t as fetishized. (Kitano’s Sonatine is kind of interesting for being distinctly Sopranos-esque in using a mob story as an inward-looking existential parable about depression/wry commentary on middle-class ennui, but that’s the only direct point of comparison in my limited exposure.)

Anyway not sure where I’m going with this except to say that I also don’t love a lot of the other media that people who love _Yakuza_ love as much as the people who love _Yakuza_ do. _GTA_ is the obvious point of comparison in video games and I never much cared for _GTA_’s pastiche of pop crime cinema either (pastiche and goofiness being the only way to make a premise like this not instantly offputting for a video game where you can run around freely and shatter any illusion of realism at will).

you’re thinking a little too fancy lol, I meant more like network tv crime shows. More Law And Order than HBO tbh

Only a little bit through the episode but Tim has seen my posts here about Mischief Makers, though my accent is a bit more Queen's English rather than Oi Oi English.

Still listening to the episode and I think I‘ve said this before in here but despite thinking it’s an exquisite game, I totally get how Brandon feels about the movement in Hollow Knight. I also played it on a PS4 so while I respect Brandon for being open minded enough to consider whether it was his Switch all along, the movement in the game starts quite clunky and threadbare feeling.

Having a dash in a Metroid-like _without_ being able to maintain that speed when you jump will always feel wrong to me, and it took me a while to come to terms with that while playing. However, a combination of letting the whole game and movement/combat feel sink in, badge customization, and unlocking traversal abilities, made me really come around on it.

It demands a lot of precision so maybe even a veeeeery small amount of lag will ruin the experience control-wise, but yeah, I didn't care for the movement initially either.

Hello, I'm the guy who not only likes, but Loves Stretch Panic, adores Mischief Makers, and thinks Rakugaki Showtime is a Rakugaki Good Time. Mischief Makers is bloody brilliant.

But Gunstar Heroes is A Perfect Game. The granularity it has in how you can play it is great.

    Silhouette Mirage is also awesome.

The thing about Mother is, despite Earthbound being much bigger and longer than Mother, it‘s also more dense. Sure it has its bloat, I don’t think stuff like the Lava Spring or Monkey Cave added much to Earthbound, but it didn‘t slow down the pace as much as the Mother 1 factory, swamp, desert, or the grinding in Magicant did. I think the Easy Ring solved a lot of the pacing issues, but it still has a high ratio of dungeon areas compared to the ’Itoi time‘ where we experience the world/tone/writing. Earthbound’s dungeons on the other hand are almost all remarkable and memorable, and there‘s usually some gags and ’Itoi moments' along the way.

I do want to see where Tim goes with the idea that Earthbound is not a JRPG, because I have had similar thoughts. It really only belongs as its own genre. The 'Itoi Time' feels so essential to the experience that the RPG elements are secondary. Toby Fox captured that idea in Undertale, but it's hard to define it. It's different from a walking sim or visual novel, but just as important structurally. I might sound crazy but it is why Earthbound-likes totally fail and why I wouldn't trust anyone to but Itoi himself to make these games.
