    Wooooo THH!

I feel so attacked by Tim's “Look, you are going to have to start this game eventually…”

I have been struggling with how much my vibe the Ryza and Blue Reflection games are and how I will not just commit to actually paying for one. I really like what Hayato Asano does for the music of both of the series, I think the battle systems have really cool ideas, the main character designs are good, that Menu presentation in BR is gorgeous- And yet they still are PS3 era janky and seem a litle flimsy in structure.

In BR, those enemy designs and environments leave a lot to be desired. Some of them are downright H****i goblin assaulter copypasta bland.
Ryza has mostly some ux issues in its system menus that I'm not sure get adjusted come the 3rd game, but this might be a personal hang up. I hate having to do multiple presses for something that can be a hold to multiple instead.

    Heh heh heh Dimanate.

I was in Napa Valley this weekend following GDC, and witnessed an uncanny amount of (drunken?) mispellings. I even heard the possibly apocryphal story that [Calistoga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calistoga,_California) was named as such because…

The name of Calistoga was given to the place in the fall of 1867, by Mr. Brannan, who has been reported and quoted as saying that the name came from a slip of the tongue that transformed “Saritoga of California” into “Calistoga of Sarifornia”.

If anyone is looking to boot up a ZX Spectrum, the game Rockstar Ate My Hamster by Codemasters is fun for 15 minutes. It‘s a ’build a band' simulator spoof type game chock full of references to random 80s musicians. Holds up better than some of the more action oriented games.

    I did a spaghetti spit-take at “donkey hee-haw”

@“◉◉maru”#p110042 SHOOT!!! fixed, thank you. sorry vincent!!

I loved the part where everyone was telling Thor his Evil Chair videogame idea was actually really great and he shouldn't give up on it. I agree!!!

Vincent Diamante reminds me a lot of Keanu Reeves. I feel like you could introduce him as Keanu Reeves on an episode and nobody would question it.

while not really new, a genre i‘ve thought about a bit is whatever genre minecraft is; block-based sandbox game?

i’ve been making a playlist of them

    (maybe i'll make it a thread…)

as a gen z-izen, uhh, liking stuff is cooler than hating stuff i think, so long as that stuff isn't ideologically bad/problematic... and i feel called out, because tim rogers and thorhighheels are probably the biggest reasons why i think that!

also, as a michigander who hasn't gone to detroit (yet), and who doesn't watch sports, hearing tim praise it still made me happy for some reason

also also, the train simulator vincent diamante was talking about is jr east train simulator, with music by katsushika trio (basically casiopea minus issei noro (who has stuck with casiopea))

looking at youtube, the opening animation uses the song red express:

The bait-and-switch genre isn't new. Hideo Kojima invented it in 2001.

Absolutely love Thor revealing that their use of mysterious is mostly a way to be very cleverly inclusive and positive. That‘s so smart… I never would have either thought of that or figured it out if he hadn’t said it that obliquely.

The best new genre is the factory stimulation genre, and I'm one of the few forum members who is sexy enough to know and acknowledge it.

I'm still listening but Thor has such a wonderful attitude and beautifully idiosyncratic critical position. His videos are so much fun, anyone who hasn't already should definitely check them out. Actually I'll shout out Vince too, very insightful guy as well. Fantastic panel today.

    @“Gaagaagiins”#p110096 factory stimulation genre

I'm curious to know how you would (or if you would) distinguish this from something like SimRefinery.

Vincent's vulnerability about teaching game design went straight to the heart, too hard on himself considering this capitalistic hellscape of trying to tie your passion to a job like that (or almost every single job) is almost doomed from the start

@“Mnemogenic”#p110100 I’m curious to know how you would (or if you would) distinguish this from something like SimRefinery.

I am going to make some assumptions about its gameplay since the Youtube gameplay demo video I brought up on it was too boring, I would say the main difference between _SimRefinery_ and games like _Factorio, Satisfactory, Dyson Sphere Project_ et. al is that the actual logistics part of automating the factory is not abstracted.

What _SimRefinery_ looks like to me is that you manage productivity and efficiency by tooling different parameters (which you also do in factory simulation games), but logistics is not really incorporated into the gameplay. It seems like in _SimRefinery_ for instance, you build parts of the refinery and tool different parameters of different buildings, and magical little gnomes set up pipelines and truck routes between them. Flow rate or throughput of materials between buildings might be simulated based on where you build them, but, that part of the game doesn't seem to incorporate much granular detail.

In _Factorio_ things are not so convenient. It's up to you to not just build the pipelines but to connect output to input for everything. You can't just build a mining drill and a smelter and get iron. You need to build a mining drill that deposits iron ore on to a belt which moves it to smelters which are fed iron (and coal) with machines and the iron also gets removed from the smelter with machines on to another belt and to another machine and............. so on. You have to actually build all of that, 1x1 map tile of conveyer belt in a specific direction by 1x1 map tile of conveyer belt.

Does anyone on Google Podcasts get a “Cannot Play” error message or just me?

@“Tradegood”#p110118 reached out to shane about this, and apparently it's an issue with our server host. apologies!!

until it comes back up, you can access the mp3 at our [archive.org page](https://archive.org/details/insertcredit), or watch on youtube:
