Maybe the best lightning round game I’ve ever made this week.

This lightning round was Pure Podcast Magic™. I like listening to Tim and I like his presentation style but it sure is nice to sometimes have a break from him totally dominating the conversation.

Believe it or not but Sonic Frontiers was the beneficiary/victim of multiple large-scale focus tests per year for the last three years of development.

@“Jaffe”#p132408 Maybe the best lightning round game I’ve ever made this week.

    No kidding!

@“esper”#p132404 Catherine asks: What makes the perfect handheld? (38:18)

The GBA was the perfect handheld because I could emulate all the games from virtually the moment it launched, making actually having to hold, look at or otherwise play an actual GBA near-entirely optional

Only just started listening to the ep (short for episode) and Jaffe's intro reminded me to check the reviews. Not sure if this has been noticed in previous threads or in this episode but ask and you shall receive.

Edit - it is addressed at the end

When Pacifist Dark Souls was mentioned my brain immediately conjured a game where you‘re at a large family gathering and you have to dodge and parry extended family members or else they lock you into awkward small talk. The ’combat' could be a small conversational battle minigames.

The aim is to obviously leave before the timer expires otherwise your trapped there for the rest of the night. I'm not traumatized by South American family gatherings at all.

What brandon brought up during the handheld question is something I‘ve thought of for a while. Specifically i feel like the PS2 era had such a huge volume of games that I’m sure if it was reintroduced to the public in a handheld way it would be a hit and so many new gems would be discovered or rediscovered. so many decades old games i discovered while growing up with the GBA. It gave me appreciation for a multitude of genres, and it was refreshing that it kinda had a different playstyle to it. I actually have discussed with my friends what a handheld console would look like if we had a successor to the idea that its running games from a few generations ago , and we came up with 2 different answers , both of them are kinda dumb but we were thinking of what would make most financial sense. One was a online focused device, that its main function is to play all those online only games and mmos and so on. Really leaning into the online boom of the ps3/360 era. The other is a USB-C device/Hub that you can connect to any screen that overlays an OS and runs ps2 era or before games, kinda like a gaming rasberry pi (an issue i had with this idea is that at that point it might as well be an app on your phone ). I think the biggest problem is that with these gaming subscriptions that sony/xbox/nintendo has, consolidation of how a console plays makes the most financial sense going forward. I hope im wrong but I don't think we will see something that has a unique way of playing or a different aspect ratio going forward like the DS or the GBA because they wanna put it on there and you get to play it on whatever device they come out with next. Continuity is king.

Pretty sure Brandon was thinking of Alex Trebek

    @“Mnemogenic”#p132423 Remarkably consistent.

I used to pronounce ‘genre’ kinda like that before I learned how it's actually supposed to be pronounced.

I would play THEE HELL out of this. Sounds incredible.

@“Jaffe”#p132408 It is. bring it back. not just with me either.

The sausage joint Frank mentions off the top is called Würstkuche, it’s a chain, and it sucks. If you order a vegetarian sausage they will overcook it and charge you $14 for something that costs $6 for a pack of 6 and tastes better uncooked. People go nuts for Worst Coochie idk

@“treefroggy”#p132441 this is what I get for looking up “San Francisco sausage restaurant” and assuming there couldn’t be more than one

When I think “souls,” I think these elements timing based action puzzles - more than quick reactions, the defining element of souls combat for me is the challenge of correctly reading an enemy attack, knowing the correct response and timing, and using that to score a hit. Add in heavy focus on exploration and frequent fail states that require you to try and try again, then you've got yourselves a souls.

So for a non violent Souls game, I'd pitch an action rhythm game (but not like _Necrodancer_) where you play as a dance ninja. The triggers are bound to various dance moves (perhaps similar to franks good basketball suggestion). "Combat" is you trying to posture-break enemies by dancing them in circles. Maybe you have a _sekiro_-style death blow where you steal their jewelry or whatever. For exploration, you have to move through a series of levels like a big labyrinthine mansion or a night club. I'm tempted to add dance-like platforming puzzles, even though Souls aren't really about traversal, because that sounds like fun.

Maybe this is just _Hitman_ but with the majima dance from _Yakuza 0_.

Also none of you leftists are allowed to argue with me that theft is violence.

    @“Mnemogenic”#p132423 I was!! Thanks!

@"穴"#p132428 it is closer to the French (origin!) pronunciation but unfortunately it sounds ridiculous in English

I tried signing up for one of those realistic GTA online communities, but there was a whole application process including an essay requirement lol

@“Jaffe”#p132408 Please bring this one back Jaffe - it was the highlight of the episode this week! That and bad French puns

the url for the pnw flyer site is https://pantsonflyers.org/ btw, not dot-com
