Great start to the day/year for the podcast!

Are we approaching an era without physical game releases? (04:51)

I think it's a generation gap. As a ~~mature~~ ~~older~~ _old_ member of the forum I saw digital purchases start across all forms of media and adapted to it, but I know there are people out who grew up with it and it's the standard for them. Personally I love buying physical medical for the manual/sleeve/case and the magical feeling of opening something up for the first time! It's a natural progression of media, but there will always be a market for physical games, just not necessarily the games we want to buy.

Also The House at Pooh Corner will be in public domain this year. Be nice to that silly old bear everyone, please!

@“Tom of the Fog”#p147474 Oh, bother.

I really want to watch the cringe D.I.C.E. awards frank mentioned.

@“穴”#p147478 it’s in the show notes!

Inspired by the talk around playing Persona 5 and Super Mario Bros slowly, I tried to figure out appropriate verbs for playing a game in short and long durations. Then I found verbs that differentiated based on whether this was a luxuriating experience or not. Then I mapped out my own experience of some games (done hastily, so I'm leaving a lot out) to illustrate:

The first draft title is “sip, lick, swig, or chug?”

@“esper”#p147494 but the first one is worse he said! that's the true baddie

I‘ve been sipping (licking?) TOTK every morning before work since May.

    Still not finished.

It’s a good game to savor. Explore a cave or sky island, complete a side quest, maybe cook something.

And every time I play, I thank my past self for stockpiling this bomb flower or that Zonai device, so I can traverse the world somewhat seamlessly. And I collect some items for tomorrow's self.

However, I think it's time to move on with my life! But the dang game is too big! There are huge chunks of the world map I haven't even visited.

I'm also worried what will happen when I beat the game and turn it off. What was it all for?

    Too big!!!

hey @exodus was the improvised melee weapon you were thinking of the stick from silent hill 2? you said you thought maybe sh3 so i posit that this might be the one

@“esper”#p147494 @“exodus”#p147510 yeah, I‘ve watched that one but now I want the truly bad one. maybe I’ll have to come up with a research project and ask the vghf for it lol

@“Faleinks”#p147533 yeah, that‘s the one!!! they call it a stick but it’s clearly a 2x2 which would break after one hit on anything.

As someone with this profile picture, I just wanted to say that I enjoyed all the Persona discussion this episode. I‘ve also always wanted to do a run of one of the game at 1 day per day, though I’ve never had the resolve to see it through.

Also I am very excited about Persona 3 Reload, it looks so good dude

@“exodus”#p147553 Having tried to build many things out of these in real life, can confirm they break way too easily.

I’m pretty sure pokemon concierge is real stop motion, it’s a really nice little show. only issue is netflix auto skips the beautiful credit music unless you jump in and stop it which really unsettles the show’s peaceful atmosphere.

On the physical media thing, I can definitely say that I buy physical games just so I have some agency around what happens to them; giving them to friends, selling them etc.

In 2023 I bought two big boy AAA games digitally on release. They were both sequels to games I love so I assumed they were a Sure Thing. Turns out I hated both of them so now I'm stuck with £120 of digital games. If I'd got the physical, they could have been in eBay within minutes. The move to all digital is great for the environment and publishers but with big games being £60 at launch, they're now too risky to gamble on.

On the flip side, we were offered a retail deal on our new game and the margins were so bad we said no so I get why devs and publishers want digital only and I'm part of the problem.

    It's very simple:

    eating = 👍
    binge-eating = 👎
    playing a long game = 👍
    binge-playing a long game = ...

That said, I took two years to play Persona 5 and did not profit from the experience!

@“TaliesinMerlin”#p147500 I like this because now I can say I've been “goblin chugging” any particular video game that I may have been goblin chugging

Ideally, physical media would allow one to at least offset the burden of having to download/make space for increasingly-huge games, but it no longer fulfils even that basic purpose—putting aside the commonality of mandatory/day-one patches, the issues around games requiring remote digital authorisation etc, increasingly few games even include the core game data on the media anymore and will merely include whatever part is necessary to allow the player to download the rest, so you‘re basically just buying a download key printed on a disc/card. This happens all the time on Switch, where cards are significantly more expensive and therefore publishers cut corners wherever possible, but there are lots of massive games on other platforms that make zero attempt to fill the bluray, too, and it bugs the hell out of me, and I’m sure it also annoys everyone else living in parts of the world where fast/consistent internet is not a given.

Similarly, the games I tend to seek out on physical media are complete/all-in-one versions of games that I kinda want but don't care enough about to keep tabs on where or how to get the optimal version, so if you give me a no-nonsense version with all the crap in it, I'll give up some shelf space for it... but again, that doesn't really happen very often anymore.

I usually buy physical versions of games (and movies too) if they have some sort of emotional significance to me. I guess the only exception would be those sales and that Criterion runs on places like Barnes and Noble. I’ve been known to just pick up a movie because it was considered objectively Good.
