    one day early :0

    meow

    You all got Kim! Lovely!

Oh! Awesome guest! I haven’t listened to the episode yet but I hope (kim)justice was finally served for our caveman games. :eu::saluting_face:

@“◉◉maru”#p148377 nary a cave person was discussed, except… Did I? I might have

Another game other than Gex that has different English voice acting between the US and UK versions I know of is Ape Escape 3.

@“hellomrkearns”#p148405 That’s why I’ve heard it Apé Escapé

@“hellomrkearns”#p148405 Inazuma Eleven (the first one, at least) is another one, and the Fatal Frame 2 remake for Wii has a UK dub on account of the English version being PAL-exclusive, if you wanna lump that with the US-dubbed original.

The classic Layton games were unique in that they specifically changed Luke's actor for the UK versions, so as to offer a less-inauthentic cockney accent. That was kinda jarring in Australia, where Nintendo tends to flip-flop on whether to source their games from NOA or NOE, so the series started with the US cast and then flipped a game or two in.

Another great episode with a fantastic guest and great questions! Nice to hear nearly no British-bashing, I guess it‘s harder when there’s someone there who actually could be bashed.

@exodus pudding is just dessert in the UK. The word is used in various ways such as Yorkshire - think a pancake cooked in the oven, Black pudding - which is a blood sausage and probably more I forget. But if someone asks "What's for pudding?" it's dessert, not a specific one but the course of a meal. As a kid I was cursed when I asked for pudding and got an apple.

@“Tom of the Fog”#p148438 If anyone‘s going to bash the British, it’s most likely to be the British themselves!

I know Banjo Kazooie gets rightfully bashed but it still holds up to this day and isn't hampered by the time-wasting interstitials that plague and pad out a lot of contemporary platform games - it's pretty zippy! Banjo Tooie on the other hand is exactly the kind of cumulative mess that Tim was lambasting Banjo Kazooie for; too much stuff and full of maze-like critical path nonsense. Also Blast Corps is the best Rare game (I have revised my opinion away from Jet Force Gemini which is mechanically fun but is massively hampered by the Tribal collection quest). Oh well.

    Great episode!

I haven't read any George Bernard Shaw but I used to drink an excellent pub/venue named after him which has sadly been demolished to put up apartments.

Was delighted to see Kim guesting on here.

That Monkey Island grog puzzle is so cool

my favourite game for its handling of british accents is actually elden ring. it adheres to its own internal consistency around what accents apply to which characters based on geography and status. for example, a lot of the characters you meet around the start of the game - far from the Leyndell Royal Capital, where the noblest and most godly are - have west country accents (think samwise gamgee in the LOTR films). i really appreciate that, plus the broad range of accents throughout the game. it shows a real attention to detail.

@“Tom of the Fog”#p148438 then explain, if you will, why Paul Hollywood on the great British baking show once said “this is kind of more of a dessert than a pudding” - what does it mean!

@“exodus”#p148483 Not having ever seen Bake Off and only knowing a bit about it, I‘m guessing it was about a pudding, which is a type of cake - like Christmas pudding, a heavy fruit cake traditionally made with suet. If the consistency was lighter then it’s more like a normal cake.

Pudding is a term for dessert and a type of dessert in England. So yes, you can have pudding for pudding. But what you know as pudding is more like blancmange or custard with milk and usually set due to flour or other ingredients in it.

Sonic 3 is my stuck game. I couldn‘t get past Carnival Zone in Sonic 3. I was 8 or 9, and my older sisters and I couldn’t figure it out We got so close jumping up and down that we thought that was the way; pressing up and down on the d-pad didn't occur to us.

I didn't even get to play Sonic snowboarding until much later, like 1996 or so. As a consequence, I beat Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles before ever beating Sonic 3.

@“Tom of the Fog”#p148504 while this makes sense, it also totally doesn't, because when folks say “pudding is dessert” and then can also say “this is more of a dessert than a pudding” and have them both be true, that is just not any way to run a language in my opinion.

@"TaliesinMerlin"#p148505 yeah, it's ridiculous, and I got stuck here as a full grown adult just a few years ago as I mentioned in the show - I think we would've all figured it out faster if the jumping just didn't do anything!

@“exodus”#p148507 Context be a harsh mistress

Edit - also can I point out that while I may use the language I am not in charge of it. I simply navigate the potholes of confusion while trying to get a sentence out here and there.

@“Tom of the Fog”#p148508 we all know his majesty the queen runs the language, you're absolved of guilt.

@“exodus”#p148515 Thank you allowing me to continue to butcher The Kings, but not as badly as he did.

In his defence, you say something for seventy odd years it's hard to switch over. Took me a while to get used to it.
