Ep. 359 - Be Curious, with Ash Parrish

These last two Parrish-led episodes have been wonderful! The lightning round is appropriately timed as I’m in the middle of my first viewing of The Sopranos.

Nice! Thank you. I was waiting for MF Doom to be mentioned.

Excellent ep, Ash is a phenomenal host. Love being able to spend a meaningful amount of time to dig-in real-style on real-world meaningful concerns. Thanks again for the insights, both to the panelists and those continuing the convo here in this thread

You have no idea how timely this discussions about “woke” and racism was for me.

I’ve been part of a local WhatsApp group about retro gaming, all white men about the same age as me (44), and things got quite heated in the last weeks.

People complaining about the new black Little Mermaid, asking for whom this was made (my response: for children, not middle aged white men) and many, many other things equally irritating.

I argued for as long as I could to little effect. People kept responding like bullies without any kind of argument. In the end I created another group and called everyone but the four assholes responsible for the discussion.

Back to this week episode, I loved hearing about curiosity is what keeps us empathic, and I never thought about it.

So thanks a lot to Ash and the rest of the guys.

In my case, I think it’s important to leave these people uncomfortable just for the sake of it.

I agree 100% with the argument that they won’t change, that there’s something broken in them, but hell, it’s maddening to see people being homophobic, racist, transphobic and such.

are you serious 44 year old men upset about black little mermaid jesus christ

One of them explained to me that, because the story happens in a Nordic country, a black mermaid would break his immersion.

So depressing. Just think that guy had parents who once had hopes and dreams for their son

I dunno. I have yet to see a racist son to progressive parents.

sure but I’d think middle age man complaining about little mermaid race immersion in a retro gaming community would be shame enough

Ah, they certainly exist, they are just quieter or supporting it institutionally, like the “I’d vote for Obama a third time if I could” fella from get out.

Was confused at first with the slandering of one of my favorite music genres math rock, but glad to see it was a mix up. Don cab is da best dude. Also TWEWYs soundtrack has gotta be up there hiphop wise.

Also was surprised that Ash was so into military shooters, but she was cut off before she could finish explaining :smiling_face_with_tear:

Lot to chew on in this episode, saying what we’re all thinking 100%. It’s like you all said - it’s hard to decide where/when/how to fight. You don’t want to cede the platform to the enemy without a fight, because that’s how things got bad in the first place (especially with influencing kids). But Brandon’s also right that starving them of attention works a lot of the time (in the same but opposite way US media chooses not to cover things against its material interests, “we” too can manufacture consent to morally good things). If more people moved from twitter to blusky that’d be nice too.

The offhand Gorillaz shade didn’t sit well with me either!

Otherwise a fantastic first half of the episode because that’s where I’m at in the listen.

Ash, I don’t know if you are reading this, but delighted that you think of this forum as having your people. As a member of the leadership team we work hard at making it a positive and healthy environment so I took this as a pretty big compliment. Hope to continue to hear you on the show and maybe have you hang out in the forums more some time!

It was real nice to listen to some folks talk about what being cool and nice is all about. I love being curious and trying to find the hidden message in everything (everything). It’s a wonderful way to be and has made me the man I am today.

Great episode. Ash is a good guest, but a phenomenal guest-host. This episode was wonderful. Ash did a great job with both her episodes, but this one really stands out to me. I love how much of her personality is infused into the questions and games. She managed to get some truly thoughtful discussion out of the panel regarding politics and I love when that happens. American discourse is such a shitshow, and it’s so refreshing to hear some middle-aged white dudes just be cool.

I never really appreciated how much of @Jaffe goes into this show. Insert Credit is absolutely not the same without him. A few guest host episodes a year are a great reminder of just how much Jaffe puts of himself into his questions. They are a completely different flavor.

I almost feel like they should get a guest musician some time, just to see (hear?) what the podcast feels like without Kurt Feldman.

Anyway, my favorite hip-hop in games is the character select rap in Street Fighter III: Third Strike - Fight For The Future
