Ep. 361 - Specdracular 2024, with merritt k

PS. I’m only excited for the future of the show if it still includes Violence Island.

Or failing that, Pedantic Peninsula.

Know I don’t mean this in a weirdo, parasocial way when I say: love y’all.

Well that was somehow both unexpected and unsurprising. Bummer to hear and sorry to all of you, we know and appreciate that you work hard to make a great show.

Anyway, most I’ve ever been scared by a video game, and it’s not close: Clive Barker’s Undying. My dad had that game and I always at least tried the stuff he had, but I physically could not make myself play that one. The very first ghost in the game, who if you watch it on youtube now is not very scary, was absolutely HORRIFYING to a 9-10 year old gamer

I imagine this story isn’t unique: I found the Insert Credit Show because, in the middle of a global pandemic, Tim tweeted that a podcast he was on ten years ago was coming back. I was a big fan of Tim’s, so I was stoked to check out the podcast.

Coincidentally, I did already follow Frank and Brandon on Twitter, Frank for VGHF stuff and Brandon because I liked Oh, Deer and his politics seemed pretty alright. I just didn’t know y’all had anything to do with one another!

Now it’s four years later and I’m posting on these forums and way more invested in this show and this community. It’s sad to see Tim go under these circumstances, but I appreciate everyone’s candor.

To be my most honest, for maybe the past year or so, I’ve looked forward to the episodes without Tim. I don’t know if I changed or he changed, but the monologues, the loudness, his general schtick, just didn’t work on me any more. I think the show will be better without him, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. I trust y’all to turn the show into something even cooler.

Anyway

This conversation left me feeling like I don’t know what fear is lol. Stress? Anxiety? Disgust? Dread? It seemed like everybody had a particular sub-feeling they were evoking at different times. Reminded me of the Wheel of Feelings one of my therapists had on her wall. I recently lost hours of progress because of an errantly loaded save state, so right now the thing that scares me the most is the load state button.

Not much I can say but that I’m sorry to hear Tim spoke that way to anyone involved with the show. It’s fucked up. I will stop myself there :3

I’m sure I’ll put together a much longer post later, but I want to say that I am suprised and saddened by this news, but also excited for the new ideas mentioned.

Tim is by no means a necessary ingredient, especially if he can’t behave in a civilized manner.

Maybe we could have your point of view about the 360 episode? I found it weird at the time that he didnt put the link to the IC patreon on the video itself as he did with the AB one.

From his last stream he is angry about the video was posted on the IC channel, not sure how to interpret the facts. But i would tend to think that if the video was done under the IC label it should be posted to the IC channel.

I am a rare forums user but longtime listener and patron, just wanted to drop by and express my unadulterated support. I think you’re awesome and your guests are awesome and I look forward to all your future work.

Not much to say about the intro. Bummer to hear. Well, I’m sure the show will continue to be fun and I’ll remain a supporter.

My answer for scariest is the moment in the original Resident Evil 2 where Mr. X smashes through the wall to catch up to you. After establishing the rule that he can’t follow you to different areas and taking advantage of the pre rendered backgrounds you’d never expect it. It’s a jump scare that uses your own expectations about the limitations of a video game to catch you off guard. Love it!

Scariest moment for me was in Batman: Arkham Asylum, when the game fakes a crash/freeze/hard reset before the Scarecrow fight.

I was surprised at the strong statement in the start of the episode. Brandon and Frank used some really strong language (like calling Tim abusive), that does raise some questions like “damn should I stop watching his stuff?”.

After reading what Tim said about things on his discord server, it kind of makes me think it might have been better to keep things vague/private. Especially in light of the really big audience the podcast apparently has. (I was really surprised to hear how many monthly listeners there are considering the cozy feeling of the forum lol)

Either way it sounds like a split is probably best for everyone involved, I hope the hosts can figure things out privately, and I’m excited to hear where the show goes from here.

Dang it. I’m sorry that Tim treated all of you that way. I’m glad that it doesn’t have you down. Your podcast is just as good with or without him.

On the opening statement: I’ve always appreciated the way this show feels like a community of emotionally mature human beings. Thanks for being very forward and open about the change happening, and for expressing the change in a vulnerable, transparent way. I’m looking forward to see how the show evolves!

What’s the most you were ever scared by a video game?

One game that creeped me out was 1999’s Saints of Virtue, a christian first-person Doom-like where you explore a collection of dark, moody liminal spaces and shoot sword lasers at unsettling floating 3D faces. There’s one sequence in particular where you are traipsing through a mall(?) and can fall into what is essentially purgatory: a big, flat, open plane floating in the sky. You have to walk for quite a while to get to a door that lets you out of there.

It also didn’t help that I ran the game on a PC that barely met system requirements, meaning that the music and sound effects would frequently fail to play, and opening cinematics were non-existent.

It’s upsetting to see Tim leave in such a manner, between his discord and the statement on the podcast, it seems like it was for the best.

His persona has slowly started to grind my gears over the past year and a half or so, and the “jokes” putting down others and the show just felt weird, so I’m honestly okay with this change.
It will be unfortunate not having his specific slice of interest and experience on the show, but more and more that has been pushed to the side with a “don’t care Jerry” attitude, it almost feels like a waste of the knowledge and experience he could earnestly share, as the other panelist do.

I appreciate Frank’s candor and sincerity and giving a good reasoning, it definitely validates my feelings that I’ve felt over the year.

I’m excited for the new era! I think the show will be stronger and more exciting with the full commitment to the shows schtick, whatever that will be!

I really appreciate the earnest communication and openness during what I’m sure is a difficult thing. I think that style of communication takes a certain kind of bravery. As someone who’s currently rebuilding after complex traumas, it’s low key therapeutic to hear Frank and Brandon addressing and processing the situation and moving forward.
It’s the same instincts that made the recent Be Curious episode so special. Especially in the video game world! Y’all are doing something very unique and valuable.

I feel inspired to create an annoying buzzer sound!

I very rarely post on here, but I am very saddened by the news at the start of the episode. Kudos to y’all for talking about this openly and candidly. I’ve been through similar situations and know how hard it can be.

That being said, I know that sometimes change is good, especially when that change is dropping a toxic element, and I’m positive that the show is only going to get better from here on out.

Yeah basically this. I’d been hanging out on the AB discord a bunch for a few years, but usually in the sub-chats cause i got kinda bad vibes in the main chats. And yeah, starting at the first abrupt quitting and then especially once he came back, the vibes just felt so weird and i was always like “well i guess everyone’s real chill with each other off-mic so this is just a bit” but that stuff really kinda rubs the wrong way in hindsight.

And for some reason that even extended to giving the benefit of the doubt when he would like, literally quote me on the podcast saying some innocuous comment on his discord and make me sound like an asshole! I’d be like “well he might be misreading my tone” or whatever lol.

Not in a Taking Sides way but I definitely plan on hanging out more in this space nowadays.

One final thought on the state of the podcast is that more of those 80-100k need to get themselves on the forum.
