Ep. 363 - Love in the Time of Dragons

Oh, I don’t even know if it was in the game or just a trailer thing, but I do remember you’re a kid now you’re a squid now.

Culk probably really would go on IC

i made a very excited exclamation when these guys got mentioned. full disclosure: my girlfriend is 50% of this band but my involvement is no greater than helping to carry stuff and plug stuff in sometimes. they work very hard, their music video [nsfw + strobing] is very cool imo and i had zero involvement in that. they make interestingly-textured, noisy, angry, danceable songs and i’m glad people are enjoying it! it’s also very funny to me that they got mentioned within minutes of Hens Bens. we love those guys!

Gonna use this new era of the podcast as an opportunity to start posting here

Will say, from personal experience, I went to university with one guy with a Gengar tattoo. I follow a lot of tattoo artists on Instagram, and the ones who do a lot of anime/videogame stuff have Gengar popping up on their tattoo flash sheets a lot. I have to think it’s because the guy is so popular.

I have Fragile from Death Stranding on my arm. Can’t imagine I’m the only one.

this is good! Reminds me a bit of this band Motherland that SOPHIE was in before starting her solo career.

have the episode paused at 16:15 right after “at 43 years old I now understand what it’s like to be attracted to a video game character” part - can someone give me a timestamp when it’s safe to start listening again thanks

I think Momo Ayase is pretty cool too.

I can see why Gengar would be a big one. I was personally very invested in him when I was 11 and he just looks like an imp or a goblin like creature or whatever.

Oh EarthBound gets down like that? I might have to play it now.

The gengar one makes so much sense. My body builder and protein hawking salesperson rep at a a local fitness place had a Gengar tattoo. “I love those little guys,” I quote, I believe he was playing Pokémon Go. I do not think he was a gamer.

I’ve always weirdly had an affinity for Gengar but not for tattoos. Does this mean I have the gene somewhere to be a tattoo person? I think it’s because he is the first Pokémon you actually see if you watch the (one) cut scene in the game. He is Pikachu’s goblin ghost, he is unobtainable, and untouchable, he is your big brother’s Pokémon you must consume when you turn a certain age

I mean we’re all freaks down here but every friendgroup/podcast needs at least one serious, no bullshit freak.

I’m so sorry. I curse like a sailor and having listened to the podcast enough now, I know that I’m in the minority heh when it comes to language and I’m gonna do my best to drop f-bombs sparingly so as not to alienate folks who listen with their kids and such.

18:16 should be good if you wish to skip the whole topic, which was actually very tame.

If Ash is going to start posting on the forums, maybe someone can convince Frank to join in too?

There’s been incredible soundtracks with memorable videogame music in the last 10 years. I’ve tried to pick some from each year and highlighted a song or two from each. These may not be the absolute best OSTs but they are very memorable to me. ( I deliberately left out songs that are remakes of classic videogame themes, or there’d be a whole lot of FF7 Remake / Rebirth )

2024

Nine Sols

Hades 2

2023

Baldur’s Gate 3

2022

Elden Ring

Vampire Survivors

2021

Tetris Effect

2020

Hades

Black Mesa

2019

Devil May Cry 5

2018

Celeste

2017

Hollow Knight

Cuphead

2016

Doom

Dark Souls 3

2015

Undertale ( all of it, its incredible )

Bloodborne

To Frank's point, I agree that modern videogame music tends to be a bit more forgettable. Although its technically better executed with better technology, it tends to be less memorable than classic videogame music that had to rely on strong melody. I would personally love for some games to focus more on melody than epic orchestral scores, once you've heard one Dark Souls boss theme you've kinda heard them all .

Skull kid is the answer to which video game character is tattooed on the most human bodies, only if you count majora’s mask as skull kid.

I’ve met several people with Majora’s Mask/Skull Kid tats; It’s a cool design, a great shape to put more or less anywhere on your body, and looks good in black and white or in color.
