Ep. 372 - Dracula Jerky, with merritt k

From beyond the grave: For the record, I never said you said it was a painting. I just wanted to remind people that it isn’t one.

Edit from beyond the grave: timestamp 22:52 if anyone else wants to weigh in.

Last movie I watched about killing nazis was The Fall of Berlin, the 1949 Soviet film. It’s about a steel mill worker who is also very good at fighting nazis. It’s really interesting just as a window into the Soviet perspective so close to the war. Stalin is played by the guy who was Stalin in official portraits, so it’s like the real Stalin is on your TV.

As a movie, it’s kinda whatever. But it’s a cool artifact.

This is so real. I had a conversation with a partner’s 20-year-old cool brother who asked me what new music I was listening to and I brought up The Smile and was like “yeah it’s the radiohead guys doing something new”. He gave me the most blank look I’ve ever gotten in my life and said “what about new bands?”

It was at that moment I knew what it must be like to be someone who plays Valve games or mods the source engine.

its been mentioned by @phylaxis in the infinity nikki thread how the scale is a bit more realistic by just having about as many NPCs as there are buildings. similar to a yakuza most buildings you cannot go into but some quests will have you go inside or NPCs will come out which does make you imagine if there is more than you can see! also a lot of buildings will have a collectable on a roof, balcony, or stairway which is fun to be rewarded jumping around where you already wanna go!

I’m in the very late game of the main quest and doing the stylist battles, sorta like pokemon battles but with outfits based on a theme. a really cool thing it has these factions whose identities are secret at first. its only when you beat underlings, and rival factions that you unlock details about the identity of the big bad for a specific area/style. the game tracks everything for you automatically so you choose how much you want to engage but its really cute that they’ve made these intricate little social networks that make you wonder if every dorky NPC standing on a streetcorner forever is secretly the leader of a small group of stylists!

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus is such a perfect answer to the Radiohead of video games.

I would nominate Virtua Fighter, especially during the VF4 era. Every gaming journalist knew it was deep and more complex than Tekken or SoulCalibur. They surely couldn’t explain to you how or play it at that level…but they knew. If anything VF’s casual fanbase hyping up how deep the series is might have done it a disservice and actually hurt it’s popularity.

I keep checking this thread for that skeleton in high heels.

Am I the third horniest?!

That is the most interesting part of this for me - like that one guy who just looked a whole lot like saddam hussein so got a bunch of movie parts in the 90s.

I’ve revisited my horny power rankings through the history of the Insert Credit Crew and I am downgrading Merritt to third-horniest

I guess this episode has finally answered the question: If all dogs are good boys, and all cops are bastards, which is Paw Patrol?

Someone asked how many of the post-SOTN Castlevania games feature Dracula as a final boss so I’m here to answer: put simply, there’s one unambiguous “no” (and it’s the Dracula origin game, weirdly) and a couple of “not really but kinda” (the two Sorrow games mentioned by Merritt, in which you play as and/or fight potential vessels for the reincarnation of Dracula) vs. at least five games where Drac’s the dude, potentially more depending on where you count the N64 games on the post-classic/post-SOTN spectrum and whether you give a shit about any of the who-cases time-fuckery mashup games.

There’s also the Lords of Shadow reboot series, wherein the big twist at the end of the first game is that your OG Belmont guy becomes Dracula, so you mostly play as him rather than fight him.

I’m sitting here sweating like that Jordan Peele meme wondering if posting that Plague of Gripes Pokemon video will be crossing a line/heading into the heart of darkness territory.

Merritt def has to be one of the top 3 best guests, I hope she makes it back to nyc

Also not to be a “well actually” kinda person, it’s disingenuous to claim direct lineage of the nazis from the klan; sure nazis got some eugenics inspiration from the US and Jim Crow laws, but eugenics and antisemitism had already been cooking in Europe for a long while (and exported to the US). Not to mention the klan got their inspiration from European traditions (crann tara & capirote hats, ironic since they were protestants)

You fuckin’ nerds!

This episode was a blast. The show gets more fun energy year-over-year!

Ocarina of Time’s use of 2D-rendered backgrounds and skyboxes still work on me. Its rare fixed-angle shots are particularly effective: the 2 shots of Hyrule Temple right before you enter ooze atmosphere and scale. All of Hyrule Castle Town feels surprisingly dense, especially the back alleys that don’t really serve any purpose other than to be corners of the world.

I really thought the title was going to be a Longmont Potion Castle reference going into this episode.

I’m going to expose Ash and say the Monster Fucker game she was talking about is Monster Girl Quest, which honestly has a mid assortment of monster fucker options in that they’re all dommy mommies.

Oh no, I now know about Dommy Mommies.

My impression was while the modern american police force got their plan from the klan, the nazis got their ideas from elsewhere. but I’m no expert on this!

some of the paw patrol are cops and some aren’t. obviously chase, being a cop, is a cop, and thus a bastard. Rubble is just a construction worker, a laborer, a comrade. Rubble is not a cop.

There’s a fire fighter paw patrol guy too right?? I’ve never seen the show but I swear there’s a puppy in a fire helmet.

[edit] There he is. I gotta say he does not look that smart
