Not sure how well Youtube’s automated translations can deal with French otaku lingo but two prominent retro podcasts covered the Sega Saturn vs. PlayStation battle in the past few days, respectively from the angle of people who imported both machines upon their Japanese releases (above), and a more European / “PAL” perspective of the situation (below).
In the sad, boring, English speaking world of Youtube, DigitalFoundry also started a similar series, but from the technological perspective, as one would expect.
I will never complain about more Saturn discussion and rehabilitation online, obvs, but I am a bit surprised people online didn’t rather dig into the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo DS vs. PlayStation Portable death battle this Christmas season, if only for purely demographic reasons. Many adults engaging online nowadays probably care more about these two machines, by this point!
Oh hey, I made this! The ship is there in a rudimentary way when you click the “hide” button. Unfortunate I never taught myself enough about keyframe animations in Blender to finish the implementation
I got a Saroo for my birthday and I have been using it to explore the US catalog that I have missed since my library from the saturn days is mostly full of japanese releases. Anyway I was wondering if there are any saturn titles that people recomend one local release over another, for instance something like each sega rally release is slighlty different. any particular saturn games where a certain region is the one to checkout? happy holidays and thanks!
I can’t think of a positive example right now but plenty of games got “patched” for their western releases, then ported back to Japan with those fixes (Sega rally, clockwork knight, etc).
Japanese Fighters Megamix has Pepsiman in it, that’s a big one.
Gran chaser has a much better (and more appropriate to syd mead) soundtrack than the western cyber speedway.
Thanks! I will check on US steep slope. I was in the habit of importing most of my saturn games back in them days. Gran Chaser was a fav of mine so I have both of them. I actually have a music cd of the US band that did the US soundtrack was sent to my store for some promotional reason. yeah the JP release music fits better but I have a soft spot for both.
Ha after the Pepsiman discourse I was thinking wasn’t there something coffee related to fighters megamix or Vipers? then I looked it up and my mind must have been thinking of “Java Tea Virtua Fighter Kids demo” lol.
just want to add that I finally got a mister setup allowing me to play saturn games more easily than ever before. I plan to play Baroque because that has been a white whale game of mine since I was like 10, but I fired up NiGHTS for testing and that game is fun as heck. Movement feels great, and the art direction is pretty sweet. Except for when nights sticks their tongue at me; that’s scary
wait, does it really? i only see the same 10 tracks… do i need to unlock them? I remember from my (contemporary) playthrough that a low key pop song starts playing on the last stage as you shred the whole mountain, but I can’t remember if that was the US or JP release…
Hmm for some reason I was convinced Hold Me Close and Kiss by Nap on Mondy were not in the JP release, but this seems to be the thread of even big Saturn knower misremembering things. And yeah those song on the long trip down the mountain, perfect stuff.
I think then maybe only the Western release has the Sonic Gal secret character
