Favorite Video Game Movie.

Final Fantasy Spirits Within is pretty good. Ming-Na Wen! Steve Buscemi! Roz from Frasier! what's not to love (james woods)

If the Sleeping Dogs movie ever happens, that could be good.

Anyone watch that Yakuza: Like a Dragon movie?

I know it's directed by Takashi Miike but something about seeing someone dressed like Kiryu and Majima just _feels_ like it's cosplay.

Same with his Ace Attorney movie, except that it seems like a better tonal fit for being as goofy as it looks.

@Tradegood oh wow, I forgot that I watched the Ace Attorney movie with a friend like seven years ago!! We stayed up very late, and I was in such a junk food-fuelled delirium that it feels like a fever dream to me now.

The Like a Dragon definitely stinks of cosplay but it is well worth watching. The Majima actor is really good and there is a really funny cameo towards the end.

I'd say it is probably the best game movie because it is good/enjoyable in a Miike way and it represents the spirit of the games.

I’ve probably seen the Mortal Kombat 95 movie twenty times and could go for twenty one right now.

I know it’s far from perfect, and some things bothered me even back then, such as Scorpion’s spear, but it remains fun to me. Also, the soundtrack always helps me at the gym.

If we’re counting animation, and I think we are, then I’d go for the Street Fighter The Movie.

SMB 1993

SONIC OVA

DIGIMON OVA

POKÉMON The First Movie

Funny how the most basic choices of a 90’s kid are now the obscure picks by comparison, at least after Mario and sonic revisionist reboots

I’m cool with advent children and I’ve had a promotional hand fan for doubutsu no mori movie for 15 years now, but those were kind of late and didn’t grasp me like the ones from my early childhood. I wish doubutsu no mori wa sless based on wild world and more from the GCN games.

I recently saw the Angry Birds Movie and enjoyed that. It was enough removed from its source material to be enjoyable as its own thing and has a few decent relatively family friendly laughs in it. My favorite line was >!a throwaway towards the end where some random bird doesnt know what a castle is.!<

I also liked that Sean Penn plays a bird who has no dialogue and only makes grunting noises.

@BluntForceMama Oh man, I was gonna mention this one myself! This brings back so many memories, because I also watched this via YouTube in chunks, although I think by the time I got around to it it was fully up in pieces and had fansubs. From what I remember, it managed to capture the chill vibe of the game perfectly while still having a narrative about the main character moving to a new town and the anxieties that come with being in an unknown place with strangers and then gradually warming up to it.

I unironically really like the Dead or Alive movie. I think it's one of the better movies based on a fighting game. It had a decent budget and is pretty slick. Jaime Presly plays Tina.

The fighting was choreographed by Corey Yuen, who also did The Transporter. The movie is fun and colorful and doesn't take itself seriously. (There's even a volleyball scene)

I remember seeing it alone in a theater when it came out because I'm the only person I know who isn't embarrassed to like Dead or Alive lol.

The CG bra in that movie is pretty funny.

I watched the Gran Turismo Movie last night, it was pretty good!

I initially only had a slight interest in it until I recently learned that Neill Blomkamp was the director behind it. I also just rewatched the 2023 24 hours of le mans over the course of this month. The movie is pretty in-accurate to real life racing but still fun to watch after the initial somewhat-cheesy set up and heavy handed advertising for the game.

It's based off the true story of Jann Mardenborough. I knew a bit about him mostly from the the Le mans mini series on Amazon where he's featured as a driver of the ill-fated Nissan LMP1 car (they put the engine in the wrong place). I thought it was going there but it turns out the le mans race featured in the movie was based on when he drove LMP2.

I would recommend it if you like motorsport or just want a easy action movie to watch.
