Fighting games with a CPU Vs. CPU "Watch" mode

A little while ago a friend made Attract Mode, a twitter bot that will randomly plays a match between CPU players through the Bizhawk emulator, then posts them up.

This initially started out because Asuka 120% Burning Fest. Limited had a watch mode:

Since then we've been on the search for more games with a watch mode, or ones that can be easily manipulated with a Action Replay / Gameshark code to make a CPU Vs. CPU Match. This is how Street Fighter 2 on the SNES is supported.

Currently the games supported include:

  • - Asuka 120% Limited Burning Fest (Sega Saturn)
  • - Astra Superstars (Sega Saturn)
  • - Joy Mech Fight (Famicom)
  • - Rival Schools (PlayStation)
  • - SNK vs. Capcom - The Match of the Millennium (Neo Geo Pocket Color)
  • - Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES)
  • - Street Fighter Zero 2 Dash (Sega Saturn)
  • - Virtua Fighter 2 (Sega Saturn)
  • - World Heroes 2 Jet (Game Boy)
  • - Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden 2 (Super Famicom)
  • - Super Smash Bros. (N64)
  • Other games that we've found that also support this at the moment:

  • - Virtua Fighter Kids (Sega Saturn)
  • - Goiken Muyou: Anarchy in the Nippon (Sega Saturn)
  • - Bloody Roar (PS1)
  • - Bloody Roar 2 (PS1)
  • - Darkstalkers 3 (PS1) (You can turn P1 to CPU in the EX Options)
  • - Street Fighter EX+A (PS1)
  • - Vs. (PS1)
  • - TMNT Tournament Fighters (SNES)
  • Also helps me get footage for various PlayStationPark GIFs :P

Anyone else know of other fighting games that might have a Watch Mode?

For the record, your friend rules, because I love that Twitter account.

I was gonna say Virtua Fighter 2 but it looks like that was covered. Pretty sure I spent more time watching that game than actually playing it as a teen. Pretty sure you can do this with all the THQ/AKI Corporation N64 wrestling games but I don't know if those count as fighting games.

    Some others I recently spotted:

  • - Fatal Fury (Genesis) - COM Vs. COM Mode
  • - Fatal Fury 2 (Genesis) - COM Vs. COM Mode
  • - Fighting Masters (Genesis) - Watch Mode
  • - Double Dragon V - The Shadow Falls (Genesis) - "Battle Demo"
  • - Last Bronx (Saturn) - Watch Mode
  • And now Bloody Roar:

And TMNT: Tournament Fighters SNES have been added!

    Does Mugen count?

    Some recent finds:

  • - Marvel Vs. Capcom (PSOne) - Pressing Select, then Start on Options opens an EX option menu, allowing you to select CPU for P1 & P2.
  • - Street Fighter III: Third Strike (DC) allows for you to turn P1 & P2 to CPU in the menu.
  • - Marvel Vs Street Fighter (PSOne) - At the title screen highlight Option and quickly press R1, Circle, Left, Triangle, Triangle. This will get EX options which allows for changing P1 & P2 to CPU.
  • - Warpath: Jurassic Park (PSOne) - when you have a complete save file, has an Exhibition mode switch in the options to make it CPU vs CPU in Vs Mode.
  • - Street Fighter EX2 Plus - Via Hex Code, 1E669C & 0 will make P1 & P2 in Vs. CPU. Must be turned on only after selecting characters, then turning it off immediately afterwards.
  • Oddly the SEGA versions of various Capcom games don't have these same EX options.

Mortal Kombat II for Genesis and 32X has a cheat menu that includes a soak test option where it just does endless CPU vs. CPU matches. You can also turn on a setting where the CPU will always do a fatality.

Because I'm a dork I used to watch this while betting to myself which fighter would win and which fatality they'd do.

Awesome - based on that, it appears that Primal Rage on the Genesis and 32X has the same option as well!

Super Street Fighter II - Sega Genesis has a tournament mode.

Mortal Kombat 4/Gold - Tournament Mode

    Killer Instinct XBox One

Capcom vs SNK 2 - Set P1 and P2 to COM for VS Mode in Options

    SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy

    Soul Caliburs 1,2,3,5 and 6

    Samurai Shodown 2019

    Rakuga Kids

Street Fighter Alpha 2 - Set P1/P2 as COM in Options

    All Super Smash Bros. games

    Jump Force

Clayfigther: Sculptor's Cut(via cheat code)(P2 must insert code first)

Street Figther 4/SSF 4 and Ultra SF 4

    Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

glad to see people are also into this too

    Thanks @DarkKirby14!

  • - Cutie Suzuki no Ringside Angel (Mega Drive) - There is a “Watch” mode on the main screen. Select the characters and they'll go.
  • - **Dragon Ball Z - Buu Yuu Retsuden** (Mega Drive) - There is a CPU option in the main screen.
  • Also, some non-fighters:

  • - RISK (Mega Drive) - You can select every player to be CPU
  • - **Herzog Zwei** (Mega Drive) - You can set both players to CPU
  • - **Shining Force II** (Mega Drive, via SEGA 16) - On the SEGA logo, quickly press U, D, U, D, L, R, L, R, U, R, D, L, U, B. Then hold START (you need to hold this until you have selected the game which you want to continue). You should hear a sort of fanfare to let you know that it’s worked. When you choose the game you want to continue, you must select it with the C button, and then you can release START. This unlocks the Configuration menu, where Auto Battle is included.
  • - **Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe** (Mega Drive): Select Manager Mode, and the game will be CPU vs CPU
  • - **International Superstar Soccer Deluxe** (Mega Drive) - CPU vs. CPU is available.
  • - **Operation Europe - Path to Victory 1939-1945** (Mega Drive) - You can select Demo Play.
  • - **NHL Hockey 92, 93, 94** (Mega Drive) - Select "Demo" as players.
  • - **NHL 95, 96, 97, 98** (Mega Drive) - Change P1 to CPU before play.
  • - **NBA Live 95 , 96, 97, 98** (Mega Drive) - Change P1 to CPU before play.
  • - **Mega Bomberman** (Mega Drive) - You can select CPU for all characters in Battle Mode.
  • - **Grandslam Tennis** (Mega Drive) - Choose CPU vs. CPU
  • - **Tiny Toons: Acme All-Stars** (Mega Drive) - Select CPU vs CPU in Basketball & Soccer modes.
  • - **Worms** (Mega Drive) - Change each team to be CPU vs CPU.
  • Would you consider the Fire Pro series to be a fighting game? I‘ve seen whole simulated Fire Pro Wrestling World seasons/tournament brackets that were entirely CPU vs. CPU driven. It’s really compelling stuff to see, because the level of fine tuning that can go into setting up wrestler behaviour is maddeningly in-depth.

If non-fighters are being explored, the Dynasty Warriors games go into a CPU vs Army of CPU attract mode when the main menu idles. I don't know if modern ones do but the PS2 games do and you can emulate the heck out of those.

    Few more recent ones:

  • - Samurai Shodown - Warriors Rage (PSOne) - In Vs. mode, you can select both 1P & 2P as CPU players.
  • - **Rumble Roses** (PS2) - You can select a watch mode
  • - **DOA2: Harccore** (PS2) - There is a watch mode, though it will keep the timer at max and characters regain health, so not like an actual battle.
  • - **SoulCalibur II** (PS2) - There is a watch mode in the gallery you can unlock
  • - **Fatal Fury - Wild Ambition** (PSOne) - In Versus Select, you can make the CTRL be CPU or PLAYER
  • I wanted to add my two cents to this before, but I wasn‘t able to join the forums until now… anywho, here’s the games I know of that have AI vs AI, but not all of them are fighting games.

(I'm a big fan of watching AI vs AI matches myself, unfortunately, not many fighting games have that on older consoles or even in the arcades)

Was kind of hoping to find some people that would be down to watch AI vs AI matches together or something, and also to expand this list even more.

Apparently Mutant Football for the Genesis(?) has AI vs AI, but I haven't been able to find nor activate it. Any other OLD games y'all can think of with AI vs AI?

Time for another update… after looking through a bunch of BOOTLEG fighting games, I‘ve found out that all of VAST FAME’s fighting games (which use the King of Fighters '96 engine for Gameboy Color) still retain the “hold B and press A while selecting which mode” to load into CPU vs CPU for that mode, this includes the following games:

—Queen of Fighters 2000 (aka Gals Fighters, based on the Neo Geo Pocket game)

—Super Fighter S (aka Super Fighters '99, based on King of Fighters '97 on the Gameboy Color)

—Super Fighter 2001 Alpha (aka Super Fighter 2001 α, based on King of Fighters 2001)

—Soul Falchion (based on Last Blade and Samurai Shodown characters)

That said though, the official King of Fighters games on Gameboy Color also have this feature.

(**UPDATE:** To quickly **UNLOCK ALL CHARACTERS** in the game **SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium** (for Neo Geo Pocket), set the address **4EC0B** to **8E** using a hex editor. Courtesy of **Nolberto82** from the GameHacking discord)

Bad News Baseball for the NES has a native “Spectator mode” for CPU vs CPU.

    Time for a huge update…

So while most of these games aren't fighting games, these have some kind of WATCH MODE or CPU vs CPU mode. This took a long time to do, because a bunch of games aren't even in English, so I had to spend a few hours just testing all the menus.

**NOTE:** Many games are often packed into folders (such as NFL), these games usually all share the same name. For example, the NFL listing refers to games like NFL '94/'95/'96 and so on. If a game has a unique name like "NFL '98: Double or Nothing", then it'll be as its own listing.

**NOTE:** Only a few games in this list (such as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3), require a hack or codes to enable the CPU vs CPU mode, which is more or less a tournament mode or something of that sort. In UMK3, there's a code you can enable that lets you access hidden menus, where you can change the game to a demo of sorts, where you do the usual tower run, but it disables your ability to control the game. However, after losing or winning enough times, you then get control again for no apparent reason.

I plan on listing GameGear, Sega MasterSystem, Gameboy/Color, and a few others next. Started documenting these after I saw this post a while back.

My apologies for any errors, trying to get a file list on Android is a pain in the ass and it bugged out for some dumb reason.
