Personally even though I am about as anal about spoilers as people can get, I don‘t feel that it changes the experience of playing FFVII too much to know that JENOVA was the name of Sephiorth’s childhood sled

I've tried playing FFI a number of times and, man, it is deeply unpleasant to play certain ancient games. I think FF is really only worth playing once you get to FFIV. And I say that as someone who loves (almost) every FF game!
I played FFIV-VI on my gameboy advance last year and that was just the best.
@“sabertoothalex”#p79018
I remember loving FFXII when it first came out and being shocked how much people seemed to hate it.
It was great! I worked at Blockbuster and kept it checked out for a month!
It was great again when I played it in 2018!
@“edward”#p79502 What version of 1 are you playing? Sure the NES version can be more tedious, but if you played 4-6 on gba…… you should also play 1/2 on gba. those versions are really, really, definitively excellent. GBA was my first times playing final fantasy (rather than watching older brothers or whoever playing FFVII and X), so after tactics advance, FF1 dawn of souls was the next one I played. I used those same weird books that published game guides and walkthroughs and tips without any pictures the 80‘s & 90’s that I found at the very small “video game section” of my local family owned used book store. It was actually FFIV advance that later didn‘t click with me, similarly the GBA version of link to the past didn’t click with me… Until I played both the SNES versions of each on a larger screen.

I‘ve tried 1 on PSX and most recently on my Vita.
I think the lack of story combined with the grinding just begins to make it feel pointless. Like I’m just sitting in a room hitting the X button for no reason.
Also, this is maybe a weird experience, but playing God of War (2018) sort of retaught me how to play videogames and so I‘ve not been using guides since then. For a long time, I realized I had begun to play games almost like ticking off a checklist, in that I’d use guides all the time if I got even a little stuck. For whatever reason, God of War reminded me of playing games the way I did as a kid, which was to just roam and experiment and figure it out. Then playing IV. V, and VI as if the internet didn't exist made for a very enjoyable experience.
@“Syzygy”#p79512
I know a guy who insists that FFI is the only good FF game.
To me that‘s the wildest videogame opinion I’ve ever encountered, but different people like different things and there's no accounting for taste!
@“sabertoothalex”#p79471 Thanks. I took a break after finishing what would be the end of disc 1 and started playing Chrono Trigger. Wow! That‘s a great game as well. I got pretty far in that game, but again needed a break, and I’m a few hours into FF7 disc 2. There are some pretty cool twists and turns. Playing part 2 of the remake (whatever they're going to call it) is going to be a treat.
Did anyone play King‘s Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon? I played the original King’s Knight on the NES and wonder what it was like to play the mobile remake.

[In case you missed it,](https://www.digitalspy.com/tech/a40330210/final-fantasy-vii-remake-part-2-rebirth-crisis-core-remaster/) it's called _Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,_ and it's got a rough release window of "next winter."
@“Gaagaagiins”#p79523
My biggest question: Will PS5s even be readily available by next winter?

@“edward”#p79527 My biggest question: Will PS5s even be readily available by next winter?
I probably wouldn't hold your breath, lol.
I can't remember if you've mentioned whether you've gotten your hands on one or not, but it's not _too_ hard to get one if you can set aside the money for it.
@“Gaagaagiins”#p79539
ha, that‘s what I figure!
I didn’t get a ps3 until 2012 and didn‘t get a ps4 until 2017, so I imagine I won’t be getting a ps5 until 2024 or so. Though I sure would like to play FF16 and FF7 Rebirth next year!
@“edward”#p79513 What version are you playing on Vita? I beat the PSP version back in the day and it was great. If you‘re not feelin it in the context of games you’re playing these days don‘t force it. It sure could seem tedious without the railed story of later games. When you need a piece of Final Fantasy comfort food, it’s a great game for when you just want those battles without having to pay close attention to constant story cutscenes. It's a mood.
@“treefroggy”#p79581
Can definitely see that. I think grinding is just kind of a mood thing, ha.
The Vita version is the same as the PSP version, as far as I know. Which, I think, is the same as the PSX version.
@“edward”#p79582 They are all slightly different – well, there is no Vita version so it is indeed the PSP version. But there is quite a gap between the PS1 version and the PSP version.
This video has already been posted a while ago on this thread but it gives a good explanation about the evolution of FF1 and especially how much the GBA version has (positively in my opinion) influenced the following releases.

@“edward”#p79582 THIS IS GONNA BE SLIGHTLY PEDANTIC and I get what you mean, but the GBA and PSP versions were rebalanced, I wouldn‘t say there’s any grinding necessary like the original NES one.
You don't have to grind to succeed. But again it's pedantic, cause by grinding you probably just mean it feels like all you do is fight random battles without the constant spectacle of later games. FF1 still has plenty of spectacle though. But the remakes are as breezy as possible.
More than any other it's suited for mobile play IMHO.

@“chazumaru”#p79583 well, there is no Vita version so it is indeed the PSP version.
they could've been playing a PS1 classic port to vita or some other emulated version, that's why I asked.
I did want to play FFI before getting into Stranger of Paradise. I don't have huge expectations from the most recent game or anything but I figured it would be more fun and enjoyable if I understand the references that may or may not be there, and if nothing else it provides the perfect excuse to check out the first game, which I have never played!
Indeed the GBA port was my first choice, probably going to do that on my Miyoo Mini I got earlier this year, I think that game's gonna look extra cute on a very small form factor console.

@“JoJoestar”#p79587 oh how could I forget
@“edward”#1011 should just play strangers of paradise, lol.
@“JoJoestar”#p79587 I had a lot of fun doing this!
@“treefroggy”#p79588
Ha! That's been my plan!
