@“treefroggy”#p152035 idk for me personally the more mental distance i put between the original and remake/rebirth, the better. when the original is top of mind i'm to inclined to make direct comparisons and wonder why the elected to omit/add certain elements
@“tapevulture”#p152061 Yeah the better you remember the original the worse all the remake/spinoff stuff becomes. You have to make peace with experiencing the post-Kingdom Hearts, post-Hot Topic, post-fanfiction.net version of Final Fantasy VII rather than Final Fantasy VII, and the more direct comparisons to Final Fantasy VII you make the more you’re gonna have a bad time.
Agree to disagree, that‘s part of the fun for me. I am able to enjoy them both as separate things. I just don’t have room for a higher quantity of compilation content that would outweigh the original. As it stands, the remake stands in the shadow of the original without eclipsing it in my mind.
Yeah idk I did just replay VII last year, played Dirge of Cerberus for the first time, replayed Crisis Core, and rewatched Advent Children. I still feel like VII is the shining star and I’m real stoked to revisit a lot of that game in Rebirth to see what has changed and what’s the same. Most of the Compilation is just so stupid and separate that I’m not even thinking about it. Advent Children especially left my head about 4 minutes after it ended.
this is wild but i am only JUST NOW hearing that there was dlc for ff16?? that came out in december? not like i've been super invested at all in ff16 but i have heard literally nothing about it existing even through osmosis, i kinda just keep up on videogamey news anyway. kinda bonkers imo
@“phylaxis”#p152119 I learned about it last week because I saw my 100% on my trophy list go down to 80 something and was like oh they must've added DLC. Apparently more is coming in the spring too. It really made zero impact
@"sabertoothalex"#p150423 I cringe every time (and there have been many many times) I see some interview with a director or producer on an FF project and they talk about wanting to make their game look and feel like Advent Children. I've seen this mentioned with regards to FFXIII, Lightning Returns, FFXV, FFXVI, and the FFVII remakes! Insane! Wouldn't you want to make your game look and feel like a good movie . Do they not know that Advent Children is a bad movie? Kinda thought that was common knowledge...~~like FFX-2 emulating Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle~~
it's 100% a quantity thing for me. Like the original would be overshadowed in my brain space if all I did was fill my brain and pay attention to stuff like Crisis Core remake. But as it stands, I can have just the original looming large over the remake, and see them both as they are– fun!!
remember-- what you choose to pay attention to is what *paints your world view~* 🌈

@"phylaxis"#1458 @"Hunter"#1643 oh dang, I wonder what it turned out to be!

@“Hunter”#p152133 Do they not know that Advent Children is a bad movie? Kinda thought that was common knowledge…
I know exactly what you mean, but, the fight Vs. Bahamut in AC is objectively cool and I think this is how they describe them wanting the battles to feel like. I think it's totally what they accomplished with Dissida Final Fantasy, for example.
__________
Changing subject, **_Legend of Legacy_** is out now for Nintendo Switch! Barely Final Fantasy at this point, it's a spiritual successor to the likes of *Romancing SaGa* or *SaGa Frontier*!
Played the first half hour of Crisis Core Reunion assuming it would be good to prepare for Rebirth, wasn‘t into it. Think I’ll take my chances and skip it.
Zack is a dork—per earlier conversation in this and the currently playing thread it doesn't strike me that he should come across as a dork...
They should've kept the original art style—seeing these weird hyperreal sweater textures slathered over the old character animations is bizarre.
yeah, if I had any point, it was that for me personally, I decidedly didn‘t get into crisis core remake on the switch. I already played crisis core back when it was new (I got the nifty shinra electric company UMD case preorder bonus, even!) and it has cool gameplay but a horrible story. It’s basically what they did because they couldnt do an FFVII remake back then. I feel as though the release on switch was somewhat for switch owners who can now say we have Final Fantasy VII Remake at home and point at crisis core. IMO It‘s not good preparation at all, it’s the opposite. It will disappoint you, burn you out, and ruin FFVII for you. Even back in 2006 or whenever I played Crisis Core, it almost ruined FFVII for me. It certainly made me decide that FFVII compilation is unsaveable, offensive, and misses the point.
Zack is supposed to be mysterious and dope and all they've done is make him dumb. in my headcanon Zack and Aerith probably did makocaine in the back of an old shinra model F pickup truck. That was their relationship. I wanna be that guy, but I never will be. Makocaine just makes me have an uncontrollable craving for as much taco bell as possible.
The weird thing about Crisis Core was that back when it first came out I swear every review and forum post was like “the gameplay is limited by PSP standards, but this may be the best story Final Fantasy has ever told. Zack emerges as the true hero of Final Fantasy VII and perhaps the greatest protagonist in the series”
And then when the remake came out I saw reviews that were like "Nobody ever played _Crisis Core_ for its story. The main draw has always been its gameplay. Set aside the nonsensical Nomura rabbit hole and focus on the excellent action combat instead"
Of course, I'd need to go back and try to find sources that match my memory from 15 years ago (of reviews/posts about a game I didn't play until last year...). But I swear there was a weird changeup in how people talk about that game
@"treefroggy"#p152153 not Makocaine!!! That's funny. Also, wouldn't it be makojuana that'd give people the munchies?

Cissnei was kinda cool
I will definitely be enjoying Rebirth the same way I enjoyed Remake: by watching every cutscene compiled into a movie on yt.
One thing I think Remake really gets across is how silly it is to try and “faithfully” adapt even well-above-average video game stories to other media, including other types of video games
I finally got around to watching the 1998 movie New Rose Hotel last night, which is Abel Ferrara‘s take on the William Gibson short story about near-future corporate espionage in which dark money agents essentially try to capture corporate golden boys for the other team. So you’ve got freelance Tokyo-based espionage agents Christopher Walken and Willem Dafoe using prostitute Asia Argento (daughter of Dario Argento) to lure away a genius corporate virologist played by…

Anyone up for some _Final Fantasy VIII_ co-op?
I like that Zach is a goofy jock and I think that‘s an important element to his relationship with Cloud. Cloud’s character is that he‘s a sensitive and neurotic person as soon as his we get past his facade. Zach also has a facade given his bluster with Aerith, but behind it he’s still an authentic dorky himbo and that‘s a good thing! He has character that happens to manifest in being loyal and ethical in a world where he doesn’t understand most of what is happening and can‘t give it the deep serious thought it is worthy of. It’s no wonder that the reflexive and insecure teenage Cloud gets fixated on this. For Cloud, to whom nothing comes easily and his rich inner life is a burden to him, meeting a charismatic guy who has everything Cloud wants and more, the career, the girl, the certainty and sense of justice, is what leads to him >!ultimately donning the high res sweaters himself.!<
His puppydog personality also makes Zach a good foil for the self-concerned fallen angels who just spend their time being hot and reading poetry to each other. Angeal and Genesis's tit for tat is _supposed to be_ somewhat meandering while those who take action (Sephiroth & Zach) are actually affecting the material world. The point is not that Zach is anti-intellectual by not engaging in high level ideas, it's that he manages to externalize and act upon the world with his unearned confidence and still be morally righteous.
Sephiroth is an all time great villain because he has reasoned and actioned his way into summoning meteor. To stop someone who is so effective and morally determined to bring destruction feels like an impossible task given Cloud's undiagnosed anxiety disorder and identity crisis (a _crisis_ which is _core_ to his being). Zach gives Cloud license to reinvent himself, even if he can't completely escape his demons, it gives him a place to start healing and asserting himself in the world.
It's been a long time since I played Crisis Core, and its not the deepest or best written thing in the world, but I don't think that's Zach's character's fault. I have no idea how they're going to incorporate him into Rebirth and I'm a little apprehensive but I have faith.
>!
>!
Cloud = Goth
>! Zach = Jock
>! Sephiroth = Prep
>! Red XIII = Nerd
Seems it was known before from complementary materials, but somehow can‘t stop thinking about how Cloud’s mother in Rebirth is now officially called Claudia. (hoping his father was Claude).
@“Tradegood”#p152487 Red XIII is definitely a nerd.
I like Zack's character in the Compilation. He's a likeable guy! What @2501 was saying about this character seeming to clash with the flawed self-absorbed guy we get glimpses of in og VII (**FF97**???) I agree with. They extrapolate a lot. I wrote a big thing and then deleted it about how Cloud is supposedly replicating Zack's character throughout the original game until we get to Mideel, and the 3 R's (Remake Rebirth Revengeance) do a good job of bringing that Cloud to life, but then I wondered like how good a job is Cloud supposed to be doing at imitating Zack? Is it just his mannerisms and dirty ill-fitting uniform that are reminding people who knew Zack of the guy? Cloud is the most unreliable narrator there is; could he have a flawed perspective on the kind of person Zack was? If not then why isn't Cloud acting like the bubbly himbo we meet in the Compilation media?
Speaking of differences in portrayal, pour one out for sickly mako addict Cloud from the 2015 *Remake* trailer. I think they could have kept the translucent skin and eye bags around in the final design.

Yeah that's fair...

_Zach Fair_
But I mean yeah, it is a gap and those flashbacks don't make much sense without trying to retcon it. Maybe Cloud is clouded by seeing Zach in his final heroic moments and stoically >!accepting his death, and being told he was the living legacy and that moment of bravery and stoicism had the biggest traumatic impact.!< I don't think that timid Cloud necessarily had it in him to cut loose the way that Zach could (doing drag was a turning point for him to loosen up a bit, esp in the remake), so the mask he wore was Zach's more serious side that was really only in 1-2 scenes in the compliation.
That pic makes me think they should have gotten Spike from Buffy to mocap cloud for the PS3 remake.
I saw some stuff on social media, fans reposting official stuff, that I wish I hadn’t seen about VIIR2. No one cares about anything anymore man. Just show everything, watch 30 minute spoiler filled marketing videos just because. Decently sad about it.
I got my silver controller for PS1 feels tho and am still very excited.
@“sabertoothalex”#p152518 silver controller?? I wanna see!
