I’ve rolled into FF7 Rebirth (Steam Deck) and I’m constantly switching between thinking I should wait until it gets some of the jankiness patched out of it and loving how much stuff there is to do and how much fun I’m having. The most recent patch improved things somewhat from where it had been where it was practically at FF8 “best looking guy” levels of texture jank.
I still don’t think it’s as bad as some folks think it is-- but then there are also folks who think Remake on the Deck is unplayably bad (I literally have no understanding of where they’re coming from).
There is definitely a psychoanalysis to schedule someday for the arab-inspired inspiration of thief characters in Squaresoft RPGs of yore (not just FF but also Hawkeye from Trials of Mana). Although, given how much French-Belgian comics of the 70s have influenced Japanese character design in the 80s, I am sure awkward French-Belgian digestion of post-colonial malaise is to blame somewhere.
[edit] Got interested into better understanding this phenomenon and it seems a big inspiration and influence for all these creators was Nippon Animation’s アラビアンナイト シンドバットの冒険 (Arabian Nights: Sinbad’s Adventures) broadcast on Fuji TV in the Seventies.
watching this video is so refreshing coming out of the pokemon youtube hell I’ve been lost in for the past year. really putting it into perspective how low the bar is by comparison.
I don’t think a game with a Honey Bee Inn Dance Dance Revolution set-piece is trying to avoid camp in the slightest. These are also some of the same minds that brought us Crisis Core. There’s no way they’re doing it on accident
Well of course the games are silly pretty often, but I think the end of Remake is meant to be an emotional send off for the game.
I think my biggest laugh in that game was when Cloud sees Sephiroth in his place in the slums and grabs his sword, but it gets caught on the door jam. THAT’s the good stuff.
