Games for Cheapskates

reminder that the last time you could collect any Gold Points on the eShop was three days ago – now you’ve got about a year to spend them before they expire. I imagine a lot of stuff people will buy with those leftover coins is gonna be pretty cheap, so: what’s everyone getting? what’s the eShop “free” game swan song?

I have $10.67, and I’m thinking of spending it on YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World, which is currently on sale for $10 (from $50). Seems like a good one to spend coins on because I’m interested in the significant niche of gaming that it represents that I’m largely unfamiliar with first-hand, but there’s also a good chance that weird sex stuff totally puts me off it

I had no idea this game was on Switch! Me and @GameBeginnerGirl recently played through the PC-98 original around the same time and discussed it a bit in the “whatcha playing” thread.

I am assuming the Switch version won’t have the full-on sex scenes (not that they’re really anything too scandalous), and otherwise the game was just very perverted. Lots of panty shots, that sort of thing. And the protagonist is a sexist little jerk. I’d be curious to know how much it’s cleaned up in the Switch version, actually.

As insight into that type of game and that era of stuff: I would say it’s super valuable. It does so many interesting things with its visual novel/adventure game genre. The game is long and pretty laborious, though. Worth it, but kind of a grind sometimes.

Good freeware tiny metroidvania on Steam that was originally a Pico-8 game:

Did you end up playing Against the Storm? It’s calling me, but was curious to hear if anyone had thoughts.

yep, I read a lot of your response to it, that’s one of the things that has it fresh in my mind – definitely most interested in it as a historical artifact/significant piece of video games

(but dang, now that I’ve looked into the remake, which is what’s on Switch, the redrawn art is much, much less charming than the PC-88-era stuff, so I don’t know if this is my last coin hurrah or not)

Against the Storm is a pretty fun games that’s more roguelite than city builder. But the city builder part is fun because the gameplay loop is designed around the fun part. (Starting out, keeping things balanced before you need a committee to properly balance everything going on. )

That sounds worth checking out! Thank you!

Cresteaju is on sale for $3.84 USD on the eShop. I’ve never played it, but it’s pretty cool that this little bit of history is on the Switch – cup of coffee price is worth it to check that out, I think

Noticed that Marathon 1, 2, and ∞ is free on Steam

The entire Etrian Odyssey Origins collection is on a very decent -60% sale on the Nintendo eShop in the West until next Monday. That puts the bundle (1+2+3) at a reasonable :united_states: 32$ or :european_union: 32€ (so around 10~11$ per game) instead of the steep 80$ normally demanded for the bundle or ludicrous 120$ required if you buy all three games separately.

Box-Pushing Fest live now on Steam. I’m surprised it’s not called Sokoban Fest after the “Shmup Fest” where they highlighted Vampire Survivors lol. Huge win for @NoJoTo

I was gonna link all the games I can personally vouch for here but there were too many to list, so I’ll limit it to games with less than 300 user reviews:

If we start calling games like Goof Troop a “box-pusher” then NJT can’t get mad at us anymore

i am content with box-pusher as the name of the genre, and with goof troop being called a box-pusher.
(also, i probably won’t get anything during this fest, because i’m already own enough box-pushers i haven’t played yet, but there are some good ones here!)

what are your favorite box-pusher or sokoban type games? serious question.
